I've decided to take a go at finally painting my tri-color buddy over the 4th of July weekend but I can't seem to find his original color (Super Red) in any quantites greater than a touch-up rattlecan. I was hoping to just buy 5-6 regular sized spray cans but the places I've looked don't have 'em (Wal-mart, Autozone, Checker). I could get a regular gun set-up for pretty cheap but that still leaves me with no paint. Anybody know where I could get some rattlecans or, if I go with the gun, where could I get regular cans of Super Red?

Quick responses would be greatly appreciated especially if I will have to order things.

Thanks in advance guys!

Yea, looking back on my question it does seem like a no-brainer. I appreciate the input though.

Depending on what kind you're looking for, you should have some local automotive paint distributors. Some of them will even put the paint into rattle cans for you.

Be sure to post some pics once you're finished. I'm getting ready to do this myself.

Got the paint, got the hardware and got some stuff from work to tape it all off. Took off the bodyparts the night before and used the morning to wash, tape and rinse the my celi. Had to wait till late afternoon to start painting 'cuz it was too hot. Took about 3 hours to do the whole thing since the compressor I got was a bit small. Did it panel by panel laying down a few thick coats and letting them dry while the air re-charged.

After it was done for the night I let it sit out and hit it again in the morning to cover up anything I may have missed due to poor lighting. Surprisingly I had only 1 or 2 spots that got runs other than the wheel wells where I had to get real close. It has a unique texture to it since I didn't do any sanding, kinda like the new type of paint some of our F-16s have now. It's a bit rough but I think it gives it character.

All-in-all I think I did a pretty good job considering this was my first attempt at painting a car...in my driveway...over a weekend...and at night. I'll put up some pics a bit later, don't got them online yet.

Waiting on pics. How much paint did you buy?

Sorry about the wait, internet is slow here in Afganistan. Did the paint the weekend after the 4th which also ended up being the weekend before I deployed.

I bought about 3 quarts of paint and enough thinner to do a 4:2 and 4:1 ratios per 1st and 2nd coats. No clear coat but the one-stage paint I got did the job and I'm sure I could get a decent shine after a few coats of wax.

Here are the pics, enjoy!

Like I said, not the greatest job but it's pretty damn good under the circumstances. My goal was just to make the car one color regardless.

Thanks for the upload. Not bad for the first time. I can see it looks a little rough. I think if you were to wet sand it down and spray it again it will come out much smoother.

For a first time job, it looks pretty good. Like they said above, wet sanding and shooting one more wet coat would probably get you fairly smooth. Great first time though!
