View Full Version : Fall Dragon Meet October 23-24

Nitro_Alltrac

We are putting together a mini-Dragon meet for the fall. After some discussion and checking the Dragon schedule and the Tennessee football schedule we are going to do it on the weekend of October 23-24.

The plan will be to meet up on Saturday morning at the parking lot at Cedar Bluff that we used for the spring meet. From there, we'll head for the Dragon and see what the day brings.

For those that come in on Friday, we can see if we can meet up and make some runs then or we can head to the pull a part for a day of fun and scavenging. We'll work the details out later.

sounds good

at least ill have 1 or the other celica going and 1 or the other 22r/e series vehicles going

my celica is on a temp hold cause my dad wants me to wait cause he may be helping me with my car

meanwhile i think im going to take a crack at rebuilding one of the 3 22r's i have laying around. probally the one outta the celica due to it didnt completely fail.

id like it to be october, not hot, not cold. usally date gets pushed back anyway so oct seems fine

One question, are leaves on the ground up there at that time?

I don't really keep track of seasons down here since they don't stay put on a calender typically...

Nitro_Alltrac
06-28-2009, 02:27 PM
When we did our little meet last October (about mid month if I remember correctly) the leaves were just starting to come off the trees on the Dragon. There were some on the road but they weren't bad and didn't give us any traction problems. I could see where it could be a potential issue if it was wet.

On the Skyway, there weren't any leaves above 3,000 feet.

So, what do you guys think, should be put a poll and vote on a date?

My wife is willing to donate plasma to get me out of the house for a weekend!

Grot
06-28-2009, 04:40 PM
Works for me mike.

Even if it comes down to me and you we can still run,

And i dont think leaves will be bad early october. late october they will be falling heavily and will all be off by mid november-ish

I'm interested in going, though I will not be up to taking the 2 on the Dragon. I might be up to taking her on the Skyway, but definitely not on the Dragon just yet. Marshall and I can take his Celica if we decide to go.

Nitro_Alltrac
06-28-2009, 10:21 PM
I'd definitely like to run the Skyway again. The Hellbender (The left road out of Deal's Gap, I forget the route number) is another great road. Coming out of Fontana there are other really good roads to run as well and there is a route that connects off of there over to Robbinsville and then to the Skyway.

The second or third weekend in October might be good. I'm thinking that last year Josh and I met up on the weekend around the 17th. The weather was good and the leaves weren't bad. I don't think the other car clubs would be a problem. I am going to try and find out when that Harley meet is and if it is actually the Fontana meet that shows to be the first weekend. I don't have anything against Harley riders but they would have 8 or 9 cars backed up behind them going up the mountian and would not pull over to let anybody by. There was even one group of sport bikes that finally gave up as they couldn't get around them either. They were pretty much hanging on the Dragon. The other routes over in NC weren't bad.

Anybody else have a preference on the date besides Grot? This was about when we ran it last year.

vip09
06-29-2009, 07:04 PM
I don't really have a date preference. I can get off work pretty easily and I have a lot of vacation saved up. October would be better for me as it gives me more time to save up some funds for the trip.

Nitro_Alltrac

OK I found it. It's the "Rumble on the Dragon Biker Rally" and it's on the weekend of the Oct. 16-17. It's not posted on the Dragon calendar for some reason. The camping resort, Punkin Center Motorcycle Resort, on 129 about half way out to the base of the Dragon is the one that hosts it. This is what we got into last year. I would highly recommend doing this either the weekend of Oct 9-10 or the 23-24. Like I have bitched about before there were a TON of slow moving Harleys on the Dragon that weekend. The other routes over in NC weren't bad, but the Dragon was a snails pace almost all the way up.

With the NOPI meet in September, I think if we're going to do this it should be in October. The 9-10 probably wouldn't be bad leaf wise. I know last year they weren't that bad a week later. Grot, what do you think it would be like on the 23-24?

vip09
06-30-2009, 02:15 AM
October should be good for me.

Nitro_Alltrac
06-30-2009, 05:26 PM
I checked the hotel rates at the Sleep Inn there at Cedar Bluff last night and the rates on the 9-10 are about double of what they were in the spring and on the 23-24. There might be something going on there that weekend. We could just meet up there and stay where ever. I'll do a little more checking and report back.

donteatbugs

i might be able to make it in the gt-s or kt's tc, i reallt would like to do it in my gt-s for the fun factor though.

Hipster Lawrence
06-30-2009, 09:18 PM
I will be there in my mk1 if I can ever get the damn thing to pass emissions so I can get a tag.

The end of october will be fun but don't expect to be able to drive too fast. The leaf lookers will be out in force.

Nitro_Alltrac

OK, UT is home against Georgia on the 10th.

So, do we have the meet on the weekend of the 9-10 or the 23-24? Opinions. I would like to stay away from the 16-17 since that Harley meeting is going. I can put up a poll if we need to do. Personally, I'm OK with either date. I don't know how hard it will be to get a hotel for the 9-10 weekend with the big SEC home game. They're away on the other weekend. Throw up some preferences! :wiggle:

on the georgia weekend traffic will suck, cops will suck, and hotels will get more expensive as the weekend rolls closer.

I'm leaning that way myself. I checked the Sleep Inn there at Cedar Bluff for the 9-10 and it was almost double what it is on the 23-24 ($99 vs $54). The Holiday Inn is $34 more on the 9-10.

Listen to Bugs.. not only that but hanging near the middle or back I didn't have to worry so much about cops. I'd rather not be pressing myself up near the front with some of these guys. Feeling free and somewhat protected away from the front in my rolling orange road cone added to my fun factor, didn't take away from it.

My Alltrac wasn't dragon-ready but I took it anyway! It did better than I thought it would considering the 180k mile suspension and no front swaybar!

Jas, I think you will be more than ready by the time this meet rolls around. Like Bugs said, you don't have to push the car all the way to have fun. It's a rush just cruising around with the group.

Here are the rates.

$100 per/hr (bring your own tuner)

You're not the only one with an ugly All Trac vip. I'm hoping to have at least a little paint on it by then though. I got my new spray gun yesterday.

With the meet getting closer, we'll have to start talking a little about what we want to do. Do we stay mostly on the Dragon and make multiple runs, run the Dragon some and then head down the Hellbender some, run the Skyway...

We've got time to decide. It might be good to have a plan on what we want do. This will probably be a smaller group than in the spring so we'll have a little more flexibility.

Plus if anyone has an altrac hood they are willing to part with, bring it with you, i'm looking for one to mount on my car :)

All-trac 5th gen? or 6th?

Nitro_Alltrac
08-16-2009, 01:11 PM
^Good question. I forget that Jaw's car is a 6th gen.

You might be able to modify the 5th gen hood but it would take a TON of work. ST205 hoods have been showing up on Ebay a good bit lately but almost all of them are in Asia so the shipping would be pretty stiff. I think someone in the US is either making or importing CF 205 hoods. That might be something to look at.

METDeath

^Oh, and I think you need the GT4 front bumper to fit the hood since it seems to be a different shape than the NA hood.

All-trac 5th gen? or 6th?

5th gen. :) I'm wanting to mold in the hood scoop. :)

There is a guy on here with a damaged hood but the scoop is still good.. but not sure if he'll have it up there in time for this meet..

I really don't want to get an entire 6th gen hood.

1. I'd like to go custom
2. cheapest possible.. so thinking if I can get a stock 5th gen hood cheap, my friend and I can weld it to my car. :)

Hoping it will look something like this:

I just got back from the Dragon. The leaves are stating to fall so we will have to be careful with that. No cops, but there was also plenty of motorcycles who did not want to get over and thought 10 under was acceptable. I had a decent run with a Mk4 supra and I had an tibby chase me on the way up.

Saw a new Ferrari and a Z06 that about launched his rear in the other lane when pass another car. I think some cars might be too powerful.
Its already cold up there, so traction will be an issue as well.

It was a "Save the Dragon Motorcycle Rally" this weekend. I remember what a bitch the Harleys were last year. There was info on the site though about a study about running an interstate from Savana to Knoxville following US 129. Supposedly would go right through the Dragon. First time I have heard that one. Here's the link for anybody interested.

http://www.stopi3.org/pokerrun.php

Hopefully the leaves will be mostly off by the time we head up. I guess we'll see. It's been a weird year here weather wise so far. I ran up in the mountians today and the leaves hadn't really even changed much.

Yeah, spring I'll be there for. Sad part is, they wanted out so bad, yet they still haven't signed the release form for the lease. If they had, I'd have given them the dog, and whatever they could pack in an hour until they paid up.

Here's a kicker though, one of them has a very well known cardiologist for a dad. Who he won't ask for help when he needs it. Which if I haven't seen anything, in a week or two I may just drop a letter in the mail to said father. Not asking for anything, just telling him what his son and fiance (yes, my room mates are engaged to each other) is up to these days.

Well folks, we're down to less than a week and count now. I checked the extended forecast today and right now it's show partly cloudy to sunny on Saturday with highs in the low 60's. Hopefully this holds.

I propose that we meet in the parking lot across from the Holiday Inn like we did in the spring. That's a good location. We should try and roll out by 10 AM. Once we get to the Dragon, we'll see how traffic is and decide how many runs we want to try and get in. According to the Dragon calendar, there is supposed to be an Acura meet there on Saturday as well. So far I haven't found anything about any additional Harley meets.

Once we tire out on the Dragon, I propose that we do a different route. Instead of heading down 129 to the church, we can go down route 28 (it's called the Hellbender in some quarters) and stop at the Fontana Dam. This is a nice drive. It can be fast and it is twist, not as much as the Dragon though. CMS-GT4 and I did this last fall and it was fun. From there we can continue on 28 till it runs into route 143. This runs back into Robbinsville. I ran part of this on my own last fall and it is a good road. They had just finished paving 28 into 143. Once we hit Robbinsville, we can then hit the Skyway and run that.

Here's a map showing what I'm proposing. The green line roughly traces the route:

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn195/gowron100/DragonRunprop.jpg

This would give a really good run. If anybody has other suggestions or would rather do something else just throw it out there. This is just a suggestion. With a smaller group of cars, like it looks like we're going to have, this should be doable.

Murg, what do you think about this route? You're the resident expert!

One more thing, I'm going onto Huntsville, AL on Sunday for work. I'll be there through Wednesday. Anybody around Huntsville?

Well, I've got a problem now. They've been paving the interstate on my way to work (what should have been about 4 days of work is now ending its 2nd month). This morning at 6:30 AM, in the dark, I found out that they had cut the pavement down even more and now about 4-5 inches of the expansion joint was exposed. Long story short, it cut the sidewall on the right rear (one of the newer tires of course) and it let go on the way home this evening :madfawk: . The cars OK, it just went down. No blow out.

But now I've got to find a tire before Friday. I checked my local guy on the way home and he's out and it would be a couple of days. (They're Kuhmo Escta ASX 205-50-15). Sears would be 3-5 days. There are a couple of other places that sell Kuhmo here but I can't check till in the morning. Tirerack has them but with freight, I can buy them cheaper from Sears. That's my mission now.

I'm going to check the car a little more. I think everything is OK. I checked the front bearing this evening and they are OK (that's what I thought was wrong to begin with) and everythign in the back seemed OK. I did find out the hard way that the 14" spare I have in the car won't clear the dust shield on the rear brake. It got me home but was making a "slight" grinding noise. I didn't catch this when I put the wheel on. Every else seems to be OK.

Wish me luck in finding a tire. If its not one thing, its something else! :brick:

I'll give CMS a call if we make it up that way, but as for now we're a no-go. I'm going to go cry now.
We missed you earlier this year. If you don't make it out for the small run, we will have to move the heavens and earth to get you to next year's spring run.

So what time are you guys planning on leaving to the dragon by?

Since there are only a small handful of us, I don't think it is absurd to think we would roll out around 10:30 if we are meeting in the traditional spot at 10am.

That sounds good. I got into town about 3. Rain wasn't that bad but I ran in and out of it all day. I just watched the Knoxville weather and things look good for tomorrow. I think we might have a pretty good day tomorrow.

Yeah, the sun just came out about an hour ago, things are looking good.

You in town now Mike?

I got a text from Jaw4God and his copilot asking if we were gonna get together for dinner tonite. I should be able to sneak out of work within the hour.

The weather's looking pretty good. I was just outside and it is warmer than I expected. I think we'll have a good day.

I hate it that you couldn't make it John. We'll see you in the spring!

Hey Josh, hope you feel better.

We had a pretty good day. It turned out to be a small meet. Murg, Grot, Jaws4God, his copilot Adam and myself made.

We never got a clean run anywhere we were today. We got caught behind a RV at the beginning of the Dragon but he pulled over. We might have gotten 4 miles or so and then a convoy of leaf lookers that wouldn't pull over. On the Hellbender, 4 Harleys out site seeing. They finally pulled off at the Fontana Dam and we got a good run over to route 143 where we got caught by a wrecker pulling a BIG dump truck. He pulled over and let us by. After lunch in Robbinsville, we headed for the Skyway where we got caught by more Harleys. They finally pulled off at one of the over looks early on and we got a good run in until we ran into the freaking CLOUDS above 4000 feet. It was like that almost all the way till the end. At times you couldn't see past the end of the hood.

But over all it was a good day and the company was GREAT! :bigthumbu

Now we start planning the spring meet! I can't wait!

Well, glad you guys have fun. I got some nice infection in my throat and sinus but I will be fine. We got plenty of organizing to do for the spring meet.

Oh yea, can forget the downed power line! At least that seriously decreased the presence of law enforcement on the Dragon. That's the first time I've ever been up there and not seen one cop. Of course, the only thing we would have gotten a ticket for today would have been going WELL below the speed limit.

LOL.... yeah it was def a great day. SO glad it didn't rain! :)

It was great hanging out with you guys (Mike, Grot, and Murg) can't wait for the run in the Spring!

Promise me we'll stay out of the mud :-P or maybe I can do an ST205 conversion lol..

The clouds were crazy... def made it more challenging..

Well guys, I'm getting ready to head onto Huntsville for work. I'm going back over the Dragon and taking the back roads Murg mapped out for me to Cleveland, TN and then hit 75 and on to Huntsville.

Hope to see everybody in the spring! It was a really good time!

Our pictures are up on Killboy, page 25. They've got good pics of all three vehicles. Zeephoto's pics (pg 15-16) are also good of all vehicles.

I'm going to wait and see what my pics from Sunday look like but these are really good.

The WRX wasnt with us. there should be another STI infront of it, they were together.

The ranger is mine.

Yeah, but Grot drives that Ranger like a madman.

The WRX didn't have TN plates, the Ranger did. I wasn't sure who was who, didn't know Grot's from TN.

Also, I'm half-tempted to move to Blue Ridge so I can ride the dragon at my leisure. My girl's family is up there, and I like the mountains... but I like the City, and the drive from there to Atlanta is twice as long as from here to Atlanta.

Celicas aren't required for attendance, only enthusiasm! If you look at the spring meet pics, we had a VW R32, a Focus, a WRX, some MR2's, a couple of Hondas, and the Ranger. It doesn't matter what you drive, just show up. It's a great time! :Ban1:

may have to press the 87 ram into service early to make the spring meet, or maybe the celica if I can work out her suspension issues.

also depends when in spring the meet is going to be.
