View Full Version : sheet metal ideas

I work in a sheet metal shop which is really slow right now due to the economy. This gives me an opertunity to work on some personal projects like EGR plates and such. I want more ideas though.

Anything cool or useful I could make for my (and possibly your) car?

i think a rear diffuser would be awesome! but only the hardest of the hardcore would feel a difference when driving.

Egr plates, intake heat shields, random brackets( L-brackets etc)..

~Turbo Clocking Bracket.

~Some kind of replacement for the crappy plastic cover that goes between the radiator and front bumper.

under carrage skid plate that can be mounted in the front and the rear (bolt removable of course)

I'd be in for the plate between the bumper and the radiator support you mentioned. A metal one would have to look better than the plastic one.

^ me too

16X cooling panel out of alu

metal housings that would fit into the location of the stock plastic headlight trim that would allow you to mount some projector headlights? so you can still close them but maybe only open half way...

second the diffuser and under hood plastic replacement anything to clean up the rear and cover the ugly droopy ass gas tank they put on these cars

Sorry I haven't responded to this thread in a while. I started making a cooling panel. :wiggle:

It's dirty and not sitting completely flush in the last picture. I'm having a few fitment issues due to not actually having my car there and just the plastic panel. Otherwise its coming along pretty well.

Looking pretty good. Are you going to put the hole in for the AC sight glass?

07-21-2009, 05:10 PM
whats the weight difference?is it heavier than the plastic?

04-09-2010, 02:07 AM
Heavier yes, but not enough to hinder performance in any way, shape or form.

I will return to this once my car is back on the road.

If I can make one worth selling I'll look into producing more.

Might redesign the whole thing and go TTE style, which is much more functional.

im in for a skid plate! :D
can you also make cold-air intake boxes? without the removal of the battery. that would be sweet
i have a 4th gen to be specific
can you engrave? if you can make something with celica engraved in it that would be cool too. would make it seem authentic!

Skid plates would be difficult to produce and sell for a reasonable price. To actually be protective I would have to use very heavy gauge sheet metal and this would significantly increase the difficulty of fabricating them and the cost of material and shipping would be excessive.

Cooling panels on the other hand are much more doable. Lighter gauge metal, cheap shipping and easier to make.

I'll see if my grandfather will let me go through with it and then ill talk to luni about distributing them on here.

.032-.060 Aluminum sheet works for skidplates, they don't have to as heavy duty as you might think.

Hmm, I imagined they would have to be very sturdy.

I'll keep it in mind.

Cooling panels are a good starting point though. I know there's a demand for them and its a relatively small, easy panel to make. If everything works out well with that then I'll think about moving up to skid plates.

Not making any promises here but this is something I would really like to do.

If you could do a coupe diffuser, I'd definetly buy one off you.

The only other thing I can think of for you are some nice custom battery boxes.

04-13-2010, 03:47 AM
^^ that would be cool, also the enclosure for a CAI filter...

Or going with safety, could make some nifty fire extinguisher mounting brackets/plates.

A nice CAI box that bolts to the driver's strut down and closes off that hold lil' section would be sweet.

Kind of like Chris'? I agree. Plus a ST16x coling plate. No one has ever made one.....

It's not looking good right now.

I talked to my grandfather yesterday about making some body panels for my car in the shop and he wasn't very fond of the idea. Company has had a lot of issues with safety lately and he's worried about liability and all that crap.

I think I can convince my foreman to let me bring in some sheet metal and work on the body panels during my lunch hour but making anything in bulk is probably out of the question.

I'll try and talk him into it another time when hes in a better mood like I said, it doesn't look good so far.

That skid plate idea might be a worthy thing to attempt on your lunches :)

It would be really nice if someone figured the dimensions/bolt hole locations/additional bracket locations needed for the Alltrac, so if someone wanted to fab up a skid plate on their own, they could.

Bringing back an old thread, but...
Hows that cooling panel going?
Does is sit flush now?

If at all possible, id like to buy one off you.
