View Full Version : ST185 Lightweight Fenders

RedRkt01
05-24-2009, 03:16 AM
Red Rocket Performance & Design has partnered up with an overseas manufacturer to offer lightweight laminate fenders for widebody ST185s. Ben will probably eat this up :hehe: . In the coming months we will also offer laminate bumpers in the CS design as well as the standard design. Also to be released in the future are laminate ST205 fenders and bumpers.

I have no idea what the prices of those will be. I won't even receive the pricing until next week. I'm just too excited to sit on that. Check out the pick below:

Is the one in the photo a GTS/AllTrac style widebody fender or simply a stock replacement? (Narrow)

*edit*
Yes I know what it says, I only ask for confirmation purposes. ;)
It is always nice to have someone you can count on to verify.

I believe all the parts will be widebody. That said, I think the photo is representative of a widebody fender. Though from that angle there is no real way to tell. I'll be receiving more info this week and I'll make sure of it.

Can I provide the side markers? Or can I make sure to offer fenders with the cut out? As far as I know USDM style widebody fenders will not be offered. So all of the fenders available should have the cut out. The side markers are a possibility. Since these fenders can't be used by guys in the US without the correct marker I'm think of selling it as a set (Fender and marker hardware together).

I really have no idea. I just partnered up with this manufacturer on Wednesday or Thursday. The ink is barely dry on our agreement. I was told that I'd receive all the distibutor information this coming week and the next week. I'm under the impression that most of the laminate products won't be released for another month or more. I'll definately let the community know just as soon as I know.

I see. I guess that does warrant the need for some pics. I understand the difference to be really subtle. But I don't know if it is subtle enough not to make a difference. I'll bet somebody has replaced narrow body panels with wide body panels at some point. They'll turn up in time.

Sorry Towels, I was just given these photos by the people making this stuff yesterday.

Rich, both sides produce a total net weight of about 6kg. That will be substantially lighter than the stock units. They'll be waiting for you....;)

are the fenders "straight" fiberglass or are they FRP?
is there a gel coat on them or would they need to be smoothed out with body filler?

any chance you might consider making either the US ST185 Alltrac hood or a RC/CS hood in fiberglass?
i would jump on a lightweight hood that isn't C/F or C/F overlay.

RedRkt01
08-12-2009, 08:44 PM
They are poly laminate.

The ST185 hoods are a possibility I suppose. I'd have to look into to. I can tell you right now that shipping would be nearly cost prohibitive. A box that size would be ridiculous with the needed padding to protect it. The package itself would weigh more than the bonnet.

darthripley
08-12-2009, 09:11 PM
ok, thanks for the clarification redrkt.

you're right about the shipping cost on the hood - i didn't even think of that, but it would be completely cost prohibitive.

Is the + Shipping amount mean drop shipping from your supplier in Asia or you have them in stock and shipping is from your location?

Do you have pics of these installed? I need to see correct fitment without modification.

I am interested in a pair of fenders and the bumper. I need a new fender and a new bumper before I go to paint in about 2 months...This has caught my eye but I don't want to be a guinea pig at that price. I might consider being the test fitter for a discount if you need it.

Last question. Can they make a bumper that has a plain straight bar in the middle rather than with the license plate bracket? We don't use front plates here and I would hate to have that sweet bumper uglified by the unneeded bracket.

For clarity, I am interested in the ST185 stuff, not the 165

RedRkt01
08-17-2009, 01:46 PM
Because of the cost of shipping from overseas I'd be driving up the overall cost A LOT if I had them shipped to my shop in St. Louis and then shipped again over to North Carolina. Shipping will take about a week.

I don't have fitted pics as of yet. Those will come soon. I don't need you to be a guinea pig. That's already covered.

About the bracket......I'll see about that, but being that this is a CS bumper and those were made for cars with front plates....I doubt it.

Anyone know what the total weight reduction is for the Poly fendors vs. stock?

I might want a pair for SCCA racing.

Does the ST185 price include the side markers? You mentioned you might sell as a complete unit.

Also, can someone tell me the difference between Ploy Laminate and Fiberclass? Sorry, I am not a mechanic, just a driver. :)

Thanks.

RedRkt01
08-18-2009, 01:51 PM
Souls......I haven't seen you for a while. How are you doing? Racing, I'm sure. Just so you know the poly fenders weigh about 6 lbs. for the pair. I'm not sure what the savings are, but I'd guess on the order of at least 20-30 lbs. Removed metal fenders feel light since their weight is decentralized, but if you were to crush that down into a ball I bet you'd have at least 10-15 lbs of metal per side. Perhaps more.

The side markers are setting me back more. I can send them over for an extra $30 or you can hunt for them yourselves. It won't be making me any money so it doesn't bother me either way.

As far as the construction goes......I talked to the guy who makes them and he says there is a slight amoungt of fibreglass embedded in every piece. The idea I got was that it is used to keep the form rigid. Somehow plastic is dumped all over it with some other chemicals and the mold hardens to create the fender, or whatever body piece it is. A week ago I didn't know all this; I thought it was only plastic. But asked for more info because I'm looking into doing a similar project. It's still a little over my head, but I think that has more to do with the language barrier than anything.

Hey Red.

Haven't been on the site much the last couple months. Since June I have been spending most of my free time getting the new All-Trac prepped for the busy season of racing down here.

Had Eastern States Championships, Pro Solo & local event in June. Then two more in July, and two more last weekend. Governors Cup next month. So pretty busy. (Have to work sometimes :) )

Had a lot of little things to get worked out on the new car and also learn the handling dynamics of AWD. Fun as hell!!! National events didn't do so well as the car was literally a week old; fresh out of a marathon shop project to prepare for class; and I was still learing the setup of the car. But after that I have 2 firsts and 2 seconds. If the WRX from Louisiana (Nationally ranked) hadn't come up last weekend, it would have been 3 firsts and 1 second. :(

Anyway, I thought your original weight estimate was 13.2 lbs for the pair. 6 lbs for the pair is even better!!! Have you confirmed those yet? Has anyone installed them yet to let us know about fit & quality etc.? I am very interested. If I order, I would appreciate you just sourcing the side markers also. Thanks.

Please post or PM me when the first install is done and let me know what you think. If necessary, I may act as the "ginnie pig" and start this for everyone if someone hasn't already, but I have to get through the next couple races first. Getting such a late start in my class (June) I can't afford to miss any races if I hope to podium for the annual points race.

I appreciate all you do on this board. Thanks.

Hope you are doing well.

So what would the total cost be delivered to me in zip code 27278 for 2 fenders and the front bumper?

RedRkt01
08-20-2009, 02:17 PM
Carolina, I'll have to get back to you. I'm working on different shipping solutions right now. One solution is to send it to you flat rate which would cost about $40. I'm trying to figure out what airmail would cost; Logic tells me that would be safer. I can only really ballpark a figure for you since the only price that is firm is what I pay the manufacturer in foreign currency. All prices built off of that go up or down depending on the financial markets. Right now you're looking at around $625 shipped. As stated, that price is subject to change and may go up or down a few dollars.

Souls, you are right about the weights.....deal with this stuff long enough and numbers start to scramble your brains.

Did you fit the fenders to your 165? Any pictures? I am in San Diego, CA and seriously interested. I am going to do some custom front bumper work then paint the whole car. I want the plastic fenders for lightweight and will save me time on getting the dings out of the original metal panels. Any side skirts on offer; like one piece versions of the Alltrac style? Also what is the price and schedule for bumper cover availability. Thanks.

There is no price or production schedule set for the front bumper cover as of right now. We are really busy with everything else we are working on. That will come in due time....I just don't know when, exactly.

My fenders have not come yet. They haven't even left Europe yet as we are saving the shipment for more items. But if the ST165 fenders are anything like the ST185 fenders, then I know that they'll fit perfectly. They are guarenteed for two years.

No sideskirts since they aren't that hard to come by. Plus, we would make them out of the same materials.

Wow didnt know this post had stuff for the 165ers! I would be in for a set of fiberglass fenders also, I dont even mind if they were regular (narrowbody) fenders. My car has mis-matched fenders and it bothers me just a tad.

One thing I also wish they had available was the sidemarker delete trim that the euro cars came with. I tried to find the oem part numbers awhile back with no luck.

Is there a difference between ST162 GTS fenders and ST165 Alltrac fenders? When do you think these could be delivered seeing that you are waiting to get more things onto a single shipment?

Haven't searched yet but is there a thread about what body kits are available and attainable in the US for the ST162/ST165? I actually have an ST162 coupe with 3SGTE and I know the rear is longer than the liftback models. I am still looking for side skirts too and just curious about what else is out there for the front bumber. I am planning custom work for the front and rear but maybe grafting will be easier than starting from scratch. Someday this year I hope to share my build on here too.

Supercar, the ST165 fenders are widebody fenders. Like the other GT-Fours, the ST165 has wider fenders than its regular Celica counterpart; In this case the ST162. The shipment might be anytime. How soon would you need the fenders?

As far as body kits go, there are a couple left. The Aeroform kit, for whom I was a dealer, was my favorite but is now discontinued. I'm trying to buy the forms from the company so that I can produce it on demand. I don't think that is going to happen.

There is a company in Australia that still makes a pretty cool one, but the shipping would be killer. My suggestion to you is to switch the the GT-Four body kit for the front and rear plus some custom side skirts. I might be able to help you with the side skirts, but don't hold your breath.

Kevin,
I would like them within a month if possible. What are the shipping plans? I can wait a little longer but the sooner I get them the sooner I can fit them and start work on other body work. What is shipping cost to San Diego, CA and estimated delivery date? Does it include the side markers because I want those.

Thanks.

Side markers are a little extra.....$75 for the pair. I'll get back to you on shipping costs....all that is in flux right now. We'll see what we can do about getting these to you in a month. Stay tuned.

Hey Red -

In regards to mass shipment:

I assume this is to place your orders (ie pay) - or is it if you will be interested in purchasing soon? I ask for a) clarification and b) I don't have the full funds, but will be purchasing before christmas and if possible would like to avoid big delays/shipping costs. Perhaps a deposit? (not sure on shipping time) - assuming container so assuming a month or so to your door - would probably have funds by then.

No biggie either way, but

Sorry, just to correct you on the 165 fenders, there is no difference in the actual pressing between standard 165 and standard 162 front wings. its just the bolt holes for the kit are dfferent. Thats all,

Rich, there has been many discussions on this topic. The conclusion that I always came to was that the ST162 3SGE fenders and the ST165 fenders were different in width by a few MMs as compared to the rest of the ST162 fenders. I also came to the conclusion that the forward bottom section is cut differently to accept the ST165 body kit. What say you in this regard?

Well my car is proof that they are the same, as replaced the passenger front wing when I purchased the car, due to rust damage thanks to careless use off the inner wing guard.
I could not get a ST165 new wing from toyota, but I could get a 162 one. It was identical in shape and size, the only differences being that the body shop had to drill holes for the body kit mounts.
Honestly the only difference, I paid 176 for one of the last new Mr T front wings in the uk at the time.
its an optical illusion if the wings look wider, as they are the same width, I bet it is due to the kit.
Having said all that, in the UK, we only got the two models, the 162 GTS and the GT4, so maybe the lower spec cars non uk have dif widths, but I just cannot see it. hellva lot of work changing a pressing just for a few mms.

RedRkt01
10-06-2009, 05:42 PM
I think that is the difference. In the US the ST162 and ST165 (your only modles) are the the exact same. But the 3SFE models for the ST162 (GT & ST) got different fenders or so I've been taught.

Perhaps you are right. I kinda thought they were the same, but Mafix convinced me otherwise not long ago.

Could be a US and JDM market thing, but honestly the only differece in wings I have ever seen, is between the OEM wing I had fitted and the pattern one we first ordered, which was not a great fit at all. That was down to the length, The pattern one was 5-8 mm shorter and would have left a big gap between wing end and door.

the UK market never got the small body celicas. that is a US market thing. hence why they never see narrow 4g fenders.

You should really sett up a web page with info on all the celica parts you can make..
I`m interested in anything that makes my car lighter.. ( hood and rear hatch is what i think will lighten the car the most..

RedRkt01
10-10-2009, 01:01 AM
I have a page, but my web developer is AWOL and left it unfinished.

I agree that stuff is heavy, but because of the size of that stuff and the size of the market it would be sold to the practicality of producing it is completely diminished.

alwayzsidewayz
10-10-2009, 02:10 AM
Rear hatch would be so hard to make light as the great mass of its weight is the glass, I would hate to try and get a plastic plexi panel bend to fit the way the glass does.
Was thinking though if you are going to do the front bumper, with bonnet and front wings, that I would love to save up and get the whole hit in one. a new bumper to modify for an extended front splitter would be so much nicer to work with than trying to repair and old one.

no prob on the bonnet - shipping would be outrageous simply due to size, not weight.

Also does anyone know the actual weight of stock ones?

Rich, I'll give it a go and see what we come up with. Maybe it'll be a bigger hit than I expect.

Roundy, they are 13.2 lbs per pair. Stock weigh more than double that.....can't remember the exact numbers though.

bish, I am placing he fender orders on hold. I am having a hell of a time communicating with the manufacturer over shipping issues. It might get cleared up soon, but until then I won't be taking anyones order.
