View Full Version : You guys might enjoy these... (Warning: Lots of pictures)

It was suggested on our board that you guys might enjoy looking through the pictures of our build. We built a 1983 Celica GT-S 24 hours of Lemons car a couple of years ago. What started out a very smoky interior'd, white turned to brown painted, rusted through hatched, non driving bucket ended up being one of our favorite builds to come out of our garage. A pretty fun car all-in-all although sadly not a very successful Lemons car.

I'll share some pictures and some links. Heck, you guys may have looked at all of this before but feel free to ask questions or yell at us for wrecking what ended up being a very pretty car. I'll answer what I can and cower in a corner if I receive a beating. :)

Enjoy...

He was quite a bucket when we first brought him home. On top of leaking oil like it was going out of style and a wicked idle he also had a siezed diff and what ended up being a completely trashed clutch.

Because of budget constraints for the 24 Hours of Lemons races the build was done on a shoestring from Pick and Pulls and using good old fashioned blood sweat and tears. You will have to pardon the cut springs from a Cressida, window urethane bushings, etc. and just trust that we were doing the best we could and even went slightly over budget but stayed within the spirit of the race.

I know it was still fairly unimpressive looking at this point, so we decided to shine it up a little.... and add a little vinyl.... and maybe a louvre or two.

Over a couple of weekends in the garage, Cedric became shiny and then became a race car.

And wala! Instant Celica racecar!

This doesn't really convey all of the busted knuckled, greasy nights under the car getting it running smoothly, installing the Supra diff, new dampers, changing the springs, new clutch, etc. but I think it grabs the fun we had. Hope you enjoyed the Cliff's Notes version of our journey.

Here he is all done and ready to race.

I remember seeing a thread on this a couple of years ago. I forget where I found it, but it was as awesome then as it is now.

How did you guys do?

Mr. Blue

Sadly, as good as Cedric looked, he had more mechanical problems than any of our other Lemons cars. We retired from the race halfway through the second day after replacing a blown head gasket overnight, losing the keys through the floorboard on track and having to bypass the ignition, and a wreck which pretty badly mangled a rear control arm. We think it was probably the fuel pump that finally did him in. Turns out that it was a bad idea to trust the car purchased from the obviously lying dirty old dude motorcycle mechanic.

So Cedric disappeared to the big old wrecking yard in the sky shortly after the race ended.

He was a hoot to drive while he was running though. Lots of torque and fun to whip around Altamont Raceway.

For Lemons car, you guys really had him look good.

And what was it with the manufacturers in the '80s and the brown interiors?? Even Porsche did this, often in plaid!! That's one trend I'm not sorry to see go.

No problem. We loved this car. The build was equal parts frustrating and fun and as with all of our Lemons cars a lot of love went into the build. It was sad to see it take the beating that the Altamont Lemons events always dealt.
