So for those of you who were following the plight of Mario and his red vert, here's an update-
When we all left Knoxvegas, the idea was that Mario would return to IN and pull a low mileage motor from the junkyard and be on his way. For certain reasons the pulling of the motor had to be put off till today. So they went to pull it today. Unfortunately, some time between last Monday and today, some one else had gone to the yard and completely raped that car. What are the odds? And what makes it worse is that car was in decent shape and had a lot of nice parts many of us wanted.
So that's where it stands for now. If he can't find a solution by May 5th he will have to cut his losses and catch a flight back to CA.

How hard would it be to put a rev 2 in it? B/c Im pretty sure there is a good 5s in a 1992 gts in a yard in plymouth.

the rev2 would drop in... just need to transfer accessories and other bits. grayscale is running a rev1 block in his GTS (rev2)

Depends on what you transfer over. If he just uses the block and nothing else, they are exactly the same except for the knock sensor on the rev2 which you would just leave unplugged. If he uses the head with it he would need to use the complete intake manifold, complete tb, map sensor, and ecu from the rev2.

That would fall under the "other bits" category :lolhittin

Borrowing the romate John's pc right now. Have been on the phone with about 5 different yards as of now. All of them want waaaaaaay too much and the engines have 200k++ on them. I can't chance that to get me home.

Still searching, will update later.

Thanks for the good thoughts fellas.

What's the reasoning as to why the rev2 head wouldn't work with rev1 intake manifold, sensors, and all that crap? I know there's a slight difference in cams, but i believe that's the only difference until you get to the sensors.

Rev2 block, rev2 head, rev1 intake manifold and all sensors and wiring SHOULD work as far as i know....

I don't see why it wouldn't... as I recall the differences are cam, igniter, knock sensor...

Call this place.

http://www.cars-and-parts.net/

Stock #19023 is a 5sfe block for $125. Call for details. I can't get any more info than that at the moment.

If we have to get your head checked out and decked, so be it. It'll take a little more time, and more of a pita to put it all together, but the motor is already out, timing belt won't be bad at all to do. I think finding a good block is going to be our best bet at doing this under budget.

Also check www.car-part.com. I just ran a search, and there's useable stuff within a halfway reasonable drive, but it's at the VERY top of your budget. I have NOT searched Camrys yet.

Stock number 090471 (115k miles, warranty, $399.95.)
Stock number 090712 (108k miles, warranty, $399.95.)

About a 2.5 hour drive, in Circleville, OH.

AND:
http://www.eagleparts.net/

Stock number AA0289. (107k miles, tested and good, $350.) In Cleveland, about a 3.5-4 hour drive.

Technically it would, but I wouldn't run he rev2 head without the rev2 ecu, in which case you couldn't use the rev1 intake and parts. Rev2 has no CSI, and the map sensor and tps are different.

I'm telling you guys, at this point it would be best to rebuild the bottom end that you have. 5s bottom is cheap and easy. If the crank is messed up I'm sure some one here has a spare we could donate.

Out of curiousity, what is the issue behind running a rev1 ecu on a rev2 head? The cams aren't that different at all. There's only a 5hp difference, i would imagine that the ECU should be able to take care of that small difference.

How cheap? Linkies? I don't think the crank is messed up, unless my thought process is completely retarded. I usually associate crank being messed up with spectacular failure, and the car DID run well enough once it cooled down. I drove it around the block and parked it, and it didn't seem to be lacking any power, still ran relatively smooth, just didn't sound too great.

I don't have any links, and there's no way to tell how cheap until the block is torn down which I told Mario to do this past weekend. It doesn't take anything special to mess up the crank. Spinning bearings is pretty uneventful but can make some serious gouges in the journals.

The ecu maps are a tad different. I can't tell you what the issue is but the good rule of thumb is you can go down with the same ecu but not up. None of this should really be an issue though, the only thing you guys should be after is a block, no sense in paying for a head and other junk you don't need.

He's not sure if the block is warped or not. Apparently it overheated real hard. Oil wasn't milky, though, just nice and black.

I'm personally inclined to believe that we just need a block, but i don't know anything. :P

If the block itself is still good, just screwed up internals, i have a guy that would rebuild it for a case of beer.

We can get it taken care of, just might take some driving, mario just has to come in and see this thread. Those results were just a quick 5 minute dig on a lunch break. They're out there, no doubt about it.

Only issue is, my car is down for the count as well, at this point, so hopefully the Escort is set to go today. Yes... we have TWO immobile Celicas at the house right now. AWESOME!

How many miles on the GTS in the yard? How much do they want for the bottom end, and will they be able to warranty it for like 30 days? If you could find that all out, that'd be great.

Ciento, I cant believe in a house, you guys dont have a computer he can use other than that laptop that belongs to crystal.

I spent a couple hours on the phone with Mario last night looking at engines. One of the leads panned out, and theyre delivering it to him. He could have found this stuff out himself but he says you guys wont even let him use the internet.

I just cant fathom it. Im sure after all this time you guys are probably wanting your couch back and want him to be on his way, but it doesnt sound like theres a whole lot of help on your side to get him gone.

Im sure theres another side to the story, and he wasnt complaining to me, he was just telling me why he needed my help in finding an engine. I couldnt believe he doesnt have access to the internet.

Word. I guess my main concern is that the way the thread just went it's making it out to be that i'm not doing anything to try to help him out, and that's not the case. I offered him my car any day he needed it last week when we were talking about getting the motor out of the GTS last weekend, and he declined because he doesn't know his way around here. Perfectly understandable. The situation just went sour when that motor blew. I cancelled the rest of my vacation, because the car was running, there was no reason to our knowledge that it shouldn't have held up, and there was no way i was making the Dragon, so there was no longer a reason for me to skip out on work and let work pile up, and affect my performance reviews when i'm trying to get a new position within the company instead of staying in a position where they're poised to do a bunch of layoffs.

Unfortunately, that bit us all in the ass, because now i CAN'T take time off, since we have someone on a 2 week vacation, and our PTO bucket is full.

Just a shitty situation, but the light seems to be at the end of the tunnel now, we'll get it squared away. I'm ready to spend the rest of the day elbow deep in shitty 5sfe oil sludge, and tomorrow, and wednesday if needed. But i don't see why it wouldn't be done by tomorrow. :D And then everyone is happy.

ciento44

Mario can give the nitty gritty. But the long and short is that it's a rev2 motor, all the manifolds and sensors and stuff are already swapped over, engine is assembled, looks like a motor, and all that.

I believe we're dropping it in today, i haven't heard anything different yet.

So one of you mods could just move all the Mario travel posts to a separate thread.

HI EVERYBODY !!! :D:D:D:D:D

The story so far.....

Pre-Dragon, as you all know, the Vert decided to spin a bearing and had massive rod knock. Of course this happened AFTER I rebuilt the head... sigh....

Best I can figure the cause was that the bearings ended up not being able to be properly lubricated with oil after getting washed with coolant.

Coolant? you might ask.... Funny how much damage one idiot that can't read a simple vacuum diagram can do... (NealWrong):madfawk:
IAC and Coolant bypass lines into the throttle body were switched and as a result the engine was tring to compress coolant. HG blew and damage was sustained.
I flushed the motor and rebuilt the head. I managed to get 23 miles out of Indianapolis when it blew.
I had the car towed back to Ben's house (Thanks bro! :)) and hopped a ride to the Dragon with CrIscO.

I of course had an absolutely AMAZING time with all of you at the meet. :D

AFTER THE DRAGON:

Got back to Indy and hitched a ride with Aaron (VikingJZ). That is one seriously funny guy. I don't think we stopped laughing the entire ride back.:bigthumbu
Spent that evening prepping the car for the engine removal.
Next day (Monday) I pulled the engine.
Plan was to pick up another engine from the local yard that had a MINT GTS.
As Cannon informed you all, that plan didn't quite work out. :(

Fast-forward to Sunday:
I spent a couple hours on teh speaker phone with Luni as he searched for possible donor motors for me. We came up with a list of 10 possible donors. I spent all Monday morning calling the different places, and finally came up with a good candidate. The yard ran and tsted the motor for me and delivered it that same afternoon!
I had to re-seal the plug tubes (Not difficult ;)) and clean the engine and transplant parts for the rest of the evening.
I had it up on the hoist and read to drop in for Tuesday.

Tuesday:
I got the tools and fluids and accessories I needed (cap, rotor, timing light) and slapped that puppy in. :woot:
I test drove it with Matt (Silvertuner) for about 23-25 miles, and it seemed to do decently. I figured it would be in good enough shape to drive to Murgs to meet with Marshall and Murg the next day.

Left Indy at 9AM after saying goodbye to Ben.
Made the drive to Tennessee with no incident. IAC and MAP and TPS are still faulty, though it is driveable.
Met up with Marshall (METDeath) and ****** (Murgatroy) at about 3PM at casa de Murg. Marshall and I swapped hoods and made a run to AutoZone to get a new Catalytic converter/downpipe gasket. The fumes coming into the cab gave me a NASTY headache. So, we fixed it! :D
Got to see Murgs workplace and saw him take a few calls and be all professional like. ;)
Then, Marshall headed out back to Georgia (3 hours) at around 8 or 9PM.
Murg and I went to the grocery store then went to his house and relaxed for a bit before I had some much needed sleep. (Thank you Murg and Jessie!!!)

I said my goodbyes to Murg and Jessie the next morning, and she sent me off with plenty of snacks and a delicious sandwhich for my next stretch of road.

I then drove to Kansas City, Missouri after talking on the phone at various times to Marshall Luni and Vafalla. I appreciated everyone checking on me, it alleviated some of the boredom and kept me alert.

Marshall (as he told you) put me up in the hotel for the night (last night) which was AWESOME.
I got to sleep in a BED!!!!
After a shower, shave and a meal, I passed the hell out. And it was glorious!
I woke up refreshed and hit the road at 9AM today.

TODAY:

I left at 9AM from the La Quinta on what was to be the shittiest, longest, most boring (insert other negatory adjectives) drive that took 10 hours of my life that I will never get back...

I made it to Golden, Colorado at 7PM Eastern (5PM mountain) and hung out at CriScO's work with him till closing.(9PM local time).
I am now at his house, and plan to head out tomorrow after I get up. (Whenever that is.... ) Hopefully tomorrow evening will see me in Utah, but if I am still tired, I may stay the night here again. We'll see.

That's the story so far, so stay tuned! :bigthumbu

Well, he's hanging with CriScO, so no worries on that front.

Chris, don't sweat it, it only a few bucks and he had the luxury of a bed and his own shower/etc.

Definitely. Looking at the time scale it was probably more convenient for him to stay in KC anyways. And, that hotel room was much more comfortable than my dorm room would have been, haha.

So I hung out at CrIscO's another day and did some work on the car.

Only burned 1/2 a quart of oil from Indy to Golden, CO., pretty decent. :)

Had lunch with Marshall today and went to see the new X-Men Origins movie. (It ROCKED)

Getting ready to sleep now and should be headed to Luni's place by about 9AM. Hopefully I get there by 7-8PM.

Nitro and Trance, Thank You both. :) and Thank You to everyone else!
You have all been really supportive and made this an adventure to remember. :)

Um....... yes.

So yesterday on my way to Luni and Jeremy's place, I gave a guy a jumpstart.
He hooked up the cables wrong on his end of things.
Long story short, I was lucky enough to make it to a Checkers and pick up a new alternator. :(

Then I made it to Luni's place and went out to eat some AWESOME pizza with Luni's girlie and Jeremy and Brian and Baby Bear(Tween Bear, LOL).

Then I took Luni's Mr2 out for a spin....:ohnoes:
It was vurry noice. :D 20b kicks like a mule, but the power delivery is smooth at the same time.
P.S.
Rob, fix your damn clutch engagement point. No, it wasn't the damn carpet.:p
Then I went back to their house, watched some show who's name I forget, (It was funny as hell though) and Mythbusters with Jeremy and Brian.

Then, I passed the F*** out!!!

Woke up late, (8:15) had a really great cup of coffee with Jeremy (Thanks bro!) and got back on the road.

The drive, though long, was much better than the rest of the crap I went through. Now (like CO.) there were mountains and actual SCENERY.
so it wasn't bad at all. That and the occassional drizzle while on downhill slopes with those ...awesome... tires, kept me alert and on my toes. :D

Made it back home, bought some flowers for my girl, spent some time with her and went to get a coffee and dinner.

So, Thanks to you for all your help and good wishes.
I couldn't have done it without you guys.

Went to the yard this morning and got a new (used) MAP sensor and a TPS.

I also happened to find the panel sections (lower) and the plastic speaker mounts for the System10 stuff. :D

Did you grab that factory amp when you left? If you didn't i'll see if it's still around and send it out to you with your hatch cover. I'm not going to use it.

And do you want your head? I talked it over with Matt, and he and i think it's highly unlikely that it's trashed. I don't want it, and i'd like to get it out of here by the end of the month. Let me know anything you might ever want off of this motor, i'm not going to use any of it and don't feel like dealing with selling it. All of my ignition and charging stuffs have been recently replaced and my head is good.

Nice score on the audio stuffs! :) That Japanese Double Din Alpine unit just showed up on the local craigslist again here. Trying to trade the Zex kit for it.

Shadowlife25

Factory amp is on the workbench in your garage, I forgot it. So if you can send that along, it would be great.

I have no use for the head or anything else from that motor.
Part of the payment we agreed on included you scrapping the longblock at the yard.
That is $40 right there. Anything else you can sell from it, including the head is money for you. If you don't want to put in the maybe hour to take stuff apart and/or drop it off at the yard, that's on you.

Lastly, I need my pictures Ben. You should have them by now. Please burn them to a CD and send them with the other stuff. Do not worry about the file format they are in, just send them.

Thanks

No, it is fail. It maybe has some of teh Super Aidz too, I don't know. :p

I did love driving your car though. It was fun. I can only imagine the blast it would have been on teh Dragon. :D:D:D

Luni

You have Aidz. And you gave it to my car.

Fuck you, you sick fucking guy!

Brian likes it, Baby Bear likes it. Even my GF can drive my car and like it. My buddy Travis likes it.

Youre totally outnumbered. Go back to your sissy sprung factory disk and leave my macho big man setup alone!

Shadowlife25
05-06-2009, 10:10 PM
Never said I didn't like it. Just that your clutch engagement point needs to be adjusted out further to have a little more ease of driving. You shouldn't have to put your foot completely to the floor to get it to do it's job.

Also, keep in mind that I only got to drive it for like maybe 5 minutes, so I was not at all used to it. :)

It was fun though! :bigthumbu

Yes, it does usually win...

Oh, and I got 380ish miles on the tank of gas that was in the Charger... I'm thinking sweet, the lack of power is made up for by high mileage.

I fill up this morning, 16.4 gallons... I got 24mpg in a car that's slower than mine.

Both CriScO and Mario can attest to the lack of power in the base model Charger.

Shadowlife25

The Buick was full of win! 'Cept of course for that pesky CEL. ;)

Got the car purring like a kitten now.

MAP sensor and TPS got replaced, and I went through the factory setting procedure for the IAC. Exhaust no longer leaks, as I had it repaired yesterday. :D

Now for the EPIC FAIL part:

I cut through the fingernail and under the nail of my right middle and ring fingers yesterday with a drywall saw. :owned:
I bandaged everything up and eventually got the bleeding to stop. Today, I Crazy Glued the cuts. Seems to be holding well for now, I'll probably have to re-apply later.
I can't bend them because of the swelling though. Thankfully now that the cut is sealed I can take an asprin for that. :bigthumbu

I'll post pics in a bit.

The CEL was just low MAF sensor output voltage from overboosting and going into open loop. Crisco reset it.

If you are cut that bad though, Mario, you should have someone look at it. To the bone is no joke, you need a doctor. You fingers will turn black and blue and if you get an infection, well... you get the idea. be careful! Think wisely, seeing and hearing that you cut fingers that deep is no good.
