Fellas, when stripping down a head, namely a G head, what are the parts that ABSOLUTELY have to be replaced? I know gaskets always have to be replaced, but what else? Discuss amongst yourselves......

I am no head expert, I leave that to the machine shop. But I know valve seals should also be replaced. They are pretty cheap.

Other than that, just got to inspect everything and replace everything thats damaged or not in spec. I am not sure if the valve guides need to be replaced or not. I'll let someone who is more experienced speak on that.

Get a valve grind kit, it'll have pretty much everything you need. And it wouldn't be a bad time to check valve clearances and re-shim if necessary.

I'm pretty much replacing all of the hardware involved. Valves, springs, shims and buckets (for 1ZZ units)

a good way to check your valve guides, is when removing a valve put your finger at the top of the guide and when you pull the valve steam completely out you will hear something like a "poop" sound that is a good thing, the louder/more vacuum on your finger the better

Is this a 2nd gen g head or a 1st gen? I was wondering if you could use the 1zz buckets on the 1st gen head.
