Early 90's Camry because 3S-FE's don't die. :)

I was thinking the samething.

Not to mention im very familiar with the 4afe, 5sfe now, the 3sfe doesnt differ much from the 5s much, i could do a lot of the work to it.

Having trouble finding an early 90s Corolla in that price range though

You will find more W-Bodies than you can shake a stick at in that price range. Regals, Luminas, and the like. Looks for a 3.8, not a 3.1 or a 3.4. If you can find something with an Iron Duke in it, such as a Celebrity, Cutlass Calias or Buick Century you will be in good shape too.

For the price range, that is what you are gonna be limited to unless you find a good deal on a `Rolla that is slightly rough around the edges.

I am with Tony on this. Hondas are extremely reliable, and you can find them EVERYWHERE.

Also, Nissan Altimas or Sentras are very reliable as well.

Reliability=Money.

If he has a $1200 budget, four doors, automatic, it is not going to be anything newer than `95, and that is pushing it by a few years to be realistic.

The best bet of what you are going to find in this price range, that doesn't have issues, and that is key, is a domestic from the late 80's to the early 90's.

You want four doors, so that drops a couple more cars out of the running.

For the price, you will be stuck in a Cavalier or similar.

Being realistic.

Now, that isn't to say that you won't find a deal on a late 80's Camry or Corolla, but it is gonna be rare.

The economy is kicking folks asses, and as such they are awful proud of what they own, which means a car that is only worth $1000 is gonna be priced at $2000. This means that you won't find anything newer than a `95 for anything less than $2500 unless it is blown up.

Browse Craigslist for a couple weeks and you will see what I mean, and when that unicorn does pop up (mine was a `69 Roadrunner, 52k, single owner, all original for $1500) it will be sold before you can dial the number or hack out an email.

93-97 corollas can be had for around 500-1500 around here

the 7a automatics are better cause the 4afe ones come with a 3 speed auto and they have issues

In that price range I wouldn't pre-select a brand or model. Just shop around and get the best car for the money.

yeah having some trouble finding anything decent.

Might have to try an come up with some more cash.

Found a couple of 90-94 civics for a decent price, auto and 4 door, so thats cool. Hard to decide though

I would actually suggest a Geo Prizim... They have a 4afe engine in them, automatic, only thing wrong with it is it says Geo Prizim. They are basically a 4 door cheap celica.

yea i agree with this i wouldnt look for only a certain brand to find anything for this amount of money...there are cars besides foreign that are reliable..i once had a cavalier that i got for $500 that lasted to 275,000
