Sure.

There are a few dozen options.

I have seen them 7M powered, 1UZFE, 1MZFE, LS1...

It is only limited by your imagination and budget.

can also swap an 18RG in there but there are other options. Personally the suspension can use some work first.

You will have to customize to fit any engine other than the original equipment engine.

Period.

Except for a 22-RTE... but that's hard to find.

You will still have to customize.

If the car came equipped with a 22RE, putting anything other than a 22RE will require modifications.

Period.

A 22RTE will require harness modifications, uprated fuel pump, etc...

The only engine that will drop right in and plug right up and fire right off will be another engine, identical to the one you remove.

True, but those are relatively easy to do. The harness might scare some people, but it's still pretty easy.

Au contraire. You could do a 20R, but that would be a step backward for some.
I still always suggest the 20R/22R before anything else. It's cheap, easy, is worth what little you put in it and is a very good learning experience.

BTW- I'd hold out for an 84 or 85. I never could stand the exposed head lights on the 83 model.

Good luck though!

yes get the 3rd gen

easiest swap would be a 22rte or a 7mgte

you can get 300hp from a bad ass built 22r though

Check out the 3RZ 2.7 from the 4WD Tacoma. Pretty badass engine and really good tourque and awsome drivability. We swap these into early '80s Toyota pickups that originally had the 22r and 22re. Call Big Mike at Marlin Crawler. He has done tons of these swaps and used to have an MR2 so I'll bet he would help you figure it out.

If you have the doner bell housing it bolts right up on the pickups. Or better yet put it on a 2wd Tacoma trans since they are more beefy and fab up some mounts.
