View Full Version : v6 in 5th gen.....supercharged

:hi:

hi all been on here for a while and i finally got around to posting a thread based on my supercharged v6 build in my 5th gen celica...................:D

ok to start with i bought the celica with the intention of putting a 3sgte engine in.....but over time i started to look into other areas of engines that would fit.......with no intention of putting one in.....but the more i looked into it the better a v6 sounded......... so naturally this ended up being what i wanted to do........

with not many of these conversions completed i had to rely alot on the mr2 swaps involving both 1mz and 3vz v6's....

these were awesome for info, but still not tottaly reliable as they have different running gear and it is alot easier to put one of these motors into an mr2 due simply to similar gearboxes and cv's.......

so my research continued........

i found a few 6th gen celicas and 1 5th gen in america that had done this conversion and i struck up a conversation with the lad that built it......his info and experience was a god send as he could give me a heads up on anything to look out for..........having said that, i am farily mechanicly minded and most of what he had done i had figured out before i got to speak to him....but for other areas that i had missed or neglected his info was awesome:clap:

so here we go........i had decided to go ahead and commit myself to this swap.....now on with finding either a donor car or a half (front) cut.......

this process took for-ever as all i could seem to find was automatic gearbox cars....and with an average price of $1,800 au this was definately a way cheaper option at around half the price of a 3sgte.....

so now it sounds even better....cheaper than a 3sgte with similar power.....

so i finally found a half cut........ a manual 1996 3vz-fe camry for $550

so these are pics of celica before i started messin with it.........

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/8687/img1085jf4.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1085jf4.jpg)
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/6664/img1088qy3.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1088qy3.jpg)
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/6140/img1122bl1.jpg (http://img518.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1122bl1.jpg)

So with the halfcut bought it was time for more research and info gathering.......and stripping of the halfcut and prep it for its new home.....
also at this point i was talked into supercharging by my mates helping me with the conversion... so i perchased a SC14 supercharger to provide the boost.......

http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/8039/image024vh9.jpg (http://img65.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image024vh9.jpg)

soon it was time to pull the old tired 5sfe out and clean the engine bay up and prepare it for it's new heart......

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/370/img1584rr1.jpg (http://img294.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1584rr1.jpg)
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/8035/img1594dj1.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1594dj1.jpg)

so with all the oil and gunk removed from the engine bay it was time to turn my attention to the v6.....

starting with the mounts for the SC14 charger and painting little bits.and pieces......
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7961/img1628iw7.jpg (http://img207.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1628iw7.jpg)

so with charger mounted and painting done it was time to turn my attention to the cv's, gearbox and mounts........take em off the 5sfe and put em on the 3vzfe........

i had originally planned to use the camry box which is the reason that i spent so long looking for a manual one.....and as the mr2 guys had said that all mounts bolt up and drive shaft with little mods fit as well......so this is what i had in mind........

however only 1 of the 5sfe mounts bolted to the 3vzfe gearbox (e153) the others would need modifing....which is something that i didn't really want to do...... so i decided to bolt up the 5sfe gearbox to the 3vzfe....as i had been informed that they bolt together......... so off with the gearbox's.....

3vzfe manual gearbox (E153)
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9249/img1607rf2.jpg (http://img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1607rf2.jpg)

5sfe manual gearbox (E53)
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/2954/img1606xh3.jpg (http://img292.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1606xh3.jpg)
notice the oil.......rear crank seal was buggered......

so now i had to think about what to do with the clutch now that i was changing gearbox's......so out came the measuring tape and this is what i came up with.........

camry flywheel......celica exedy heavy duty friction plate......camry pressure plate......this works perfectly so far am yet to drive to test this setup but i have been assured that it will be solid.........

so now with gearbox sorted.... and bolt pattern checked, clutch done, it was time to put it back on the 3vzfe and make a new inspection plate....as neither the 5sfe or 3vzfe matched..........

i also had to make a new mounting bracket for the 5sfe cv bearing carrier (centre shaft)as the bolt holes didnt match with the 3vzfe block so this is what we came up with......

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/4417/img1620vr6.jpg (http://img105.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1620vr6.jpg)

time to put the v6 in the celica.......

3vzfe with 5sfe gearbox bolted up..........
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/1921/img1613we2.jpg (http://img297.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1613we2.jpg)

and now in its new home

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/7634/img1644qw5.jpg (http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1644qw5.jpg)
Oh and a new front bar as well....pics of new hood and bumper to come

so with 3 of the 4 mounts bolted up i now had to make 1 new mount...timing cover side engine mount........this is what i came up with........

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4112/image022cf1.jpg (http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image022cf1.jpg)

so currently this is where i am up to......

still to do......
New Radiator
re-design supercharger mounts as it doesn't quite fit.....or modify radiator mounts to allow charger fitment.......
re-connect all hoses and piping
mount intercooler
re-condition and re install cv's
upgrade with slotted brake rotors
and upgrade suspension.......

other pics of bodykit......

body mods still to come....
custom wide bodykit
custom sideskirts
custom rear bar
re-design rear wing
paint (new colour)

i hope you have enjoyed reading and maybe even inspired you to do the same conversion......who knows.....this could become a very popular conversion..........

What HP will it run at?

I suggest you get rid of the body kit and wing and use the money to fund the rest of your interesting project! It's looking good and I will like updates. This is a nice swap!

Nice work! I'm always amazed that a v6 can even fit in that engine bay. I assume you did all the engine freshening up while it was out? timing components and seals at the least. Also I would replace EVERY single rubber hose while the engine is out. I didn't do this with my 3s swap and it was the sole reason it has been unreliable. Blew my head because of it. Looks like your well on your way to one of the very few v6 5th gens on the road.

Congratulations. And another +1 for losing the bodykit.

i understand those that like celicas to look like celicas......... i love the shape but i cant just stop with the engine......the rest of the car needs to be changed as well......as this will be a demo car for my business..... fibreglass is my thing and this will be massively modified exterior......but concerntrating so far on engine till it is all in and running smoothly then interior and exterior mods can start.......

expected power with sc14 charger.......200 - 220kw.....depending on pulley ratio's

given a good enough imagination and the skills to make it work..anything can be put anywhere...... it is a tight fit but it fits....... will need to modify charger intake to make it easier to fit but not much else.......

more updates will follow........thanks all......

So how much more do you have left to do?

fibrewizard
03-28-2009, 10:26 PM
left to do........

wire up ecu.....
custom exhaust manifold...
power steering hoses.....

thats it....then i can drive this bad boy....lol

fibrewizard
03-28-2009, 10:27 PM
supercharger install will be dubbed stage 2... as clearance issues with radiator have forced me to re-design mounting for charger..........

custom exhaust manifold. Cool. Are you fabricating it yourself or having a shop do it? What kind of design are you aiming for? (like lengths of the runners and such?)

sorry i meant....custom exhaust y-pipe merge...... using stock manifolds......

Yeah, dude. This is awesome. Props for thinking out of the box. Are you planning on dynoing? I don't see any way you could do this build and not want to know how much torque and power it puts down.

fibrewizard
03-30-2009, 04:27 AM
will be dyno'ing for sure.......considering the motor standard is 200hp....and im getting custom y-pipe merge made...will be interesting to see the difference just on that .....not to mention the difference between 5sfe and 3vz-fe.......with the little cost it has been.......to prove a wicked bang for buck swap.......hehehehe

hey mate,

I was thinking of the same thing, puttin a v6 into a celica, not the common 3stge swap. Anything else needed? eg. LSD's and how hard was it to mount/mod for the box to bolt up?
Also I was just wondering how much did it cost u all up, I'm also in aus been lookin into a very similar project, just havent gone around and doing it.
Btw nice build.

seriously....$3000 will get one in and running, and road legal........

so far conversion has cost me......

550 for manual halfcut...
440 for twin core radiator...
100 steel for engine mounts...
440 slotted rotors......
????? ecu wiring......currently in progress
exhaust y-pipe merge...???????? next to do
engineered.......600

no modification need to bolt up gearbox........

just check bolt hole allignment as a couple of holes.... are threaded on gearbox and engine and you cant get a bolt in....so drill out either thread...and bolt up......

used original celica mounts ... however timing cover side engine mount needs to be custom made.........

a more detailed thread build is here......

440 for slotted rotors seems a bit much. I am guessing they are larger than stock? I would considered swapping the entire camry 5x100 spindle and strut housing as well while your at it. It will give you more wheel options, that is if your halfcut came with those spindles.

fibrewizard
04-08-2009, 03:12 AM
halfcut came complete.......

was looking at using camry suspension and brakes etc etc....

would have needed custom length drive shafts...... or gt4/alltrac shafts..... and custom springs........ would have been awesome to do this and definately do-able just not on my budget.........

for the rotors i was quoted by many other places.....over 275 each, without pads.........

i got mine for 440 with pads recomended by manufacturer.......girling pads DBA slotted rotors........

but youd need shifter and cables from the v6......

with a purpose? or for the tom foolery?

Yeah man. Hitches are invaluable for throwing a utility trailer back there on the rare occasions that you need to hall shit around. It beats havin to buy a truck that will just take up space, gets bad gas mileage, and that you will rarely use unless you are constantly hauling stuff around. This is the route I'm going to go with my dd I think.

ha yeah ... ya do what ya gotta do ey......

anyhow... other engine aside... whioch will be put on hold for a while as my hands are tied up in now another development with current conversion........

so trying to delay the innevitable of gearbox swap is now looking like it is gonna need to happen.....conversion that is........lol

so look out for updates as i get started on swapping out the stock celica 4 cyl box for the better and more suited, MR2 turbo/V6 Camry 5 sp manual gearbox..... as well as lightweight flywheel.......

new mounts, custom driveshafts, custom gearshift linkage mount/bracket.....

enjoy the progress as this time im on my own no mates around within cooee to help me out...lmao....... goodluck to me....bahahahahahaha

ok.....

well starting gearbox conversion this week.........

stock box didnt last as long as id hoped..lol.... but nevermind..

chang will be for the better as i wont have to baby it around anymore....
so i can finally open it up and get it dyno'd to see exactly how much HP i got and to see if stock 2.2ltr fuel pump is up to the task......

keep tuned.... more updates to come.....

Yeah man. Hitches are invaluable for throwing a utility trailer back there on the rare occasions that you need to hall shit around. It beats havin to buy a truck that will just take up space, gets bad gas mileage, and that you will rarely use unless you are constantly hauling stuff around. This is the route I'm going to go with my dd I think.

i get good fuel mileage

1xgt4 rear tranny mount
1xgt4 front-back crossmember
1xgt4 shifter cable bracket

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/201/p1106100751.jpg

hey guys..... progress again... slowly but getting there.......

ok... thermostat housing.... this is a part of the conversion that wasnt forseable.......anywho.lol.....

due to the 56 mm radiator, and the pipe that slots into the thermostat housing, the clearance was not enough to allow a hose to be connected, so the pipe had to be cut shorter........ however doing this deleted the mounting bracket from the pipe to the alternator bracket, and as the pipe only slid into the thermostat housing, thus when pressure built up the pipe blew out so the only way to fix this was to weld a pipe to the housing and whalla......the end result...............

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5347/p210610201101.jpg

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7120/p2106102011.jpg

ok well pic is of the versions of thermostat housing that evolved through the build lol.....

in the middle is the stock 3vzfe camry pipe and housing.......
compare that with the one above it (top of pic), and you can see that cutting the pipe short deleted the mounting bracket and as the pipe only slides into housing then is bolted into place.. so removing it caused problems, so solution was to get alloy pipe welded to the housing to make a solid housing and pipe setup and that is the one on the bottom........

have installed it now, and once other little bits are done i can do a pressure test and hope all is sealed and sound........

quick question: where is the supercharger?

fibrewizard
09-20-2010, 07:45 PM
ha yeah........ im sure i posted about that sometime ago.......

unfortunately the supercharger didnt fit....and i cant edit title so cant change lol.......

given the tools and time i could have made it work but it was too much custom creating and moving of things to get it to fit......

i have decided that when the time comes down the track to turbo, when im not sure, how.... im not sure...... but it will be something i am definately gonna look into when the time is right...........

i am at the stage in the build where i am just finishing off the little things and almost ready to get it looked over by an engineer and get it registered again....... so concerntrating on that atm........

yesterday drove celica on its first big(ish) drive since conversion.......168km each way to engineer to inspect for cert.....

eye balled the temp guage all the way there, temp is good, noticed temperature rises when by bout 5-8 deg when on the throttle and high in the revs.....( is this normal) then falls back to running temp a little after returning to normal highway throttle......

passed engineer pending a few changes,

firstly, exhaust was obviously too loud, so fitted new triple flow muffler and tip, pic tomorrow.....

and due to clearence issues with the brake master cylinder have to drop engine approx 8-9mm to allow for the 10mm clearence regulations state, also have to trim little bit off the engine mount that we made to again provide the 10mm clearence between mount and chassis......

so besides that everything else is good, (in the words of the mechanic, really really good for a home conversion).....

so atm a half smile but definately looking good,

other things needed, weigh bridge cert, and speedo calibration cert,

then rta here i come......
as exhaust was

wow, i just realised it has been so long since i updated this thread, so sorry to keep you all hanging.............

well i must say that the conversion is 100% complete, there is nothing more to do...........

however, the engine has spun a big end bearing, and is currently in the shop getting a bottom end re-build.

so really looking forward to getting back in it and driving again,
had a few runs with some other cars, blew away a 318i BMW, took him at 205km p/h
i got a n/a supra trying to line me up but i will wait till i get some other work done before i take him.........

wasted a few others that where not even in the same ball park but they wanted to line me up so i schooled em,..lol.... but now that engine will be completely re-freshed i should be able to school some bigger fish........... so dyno run soon and looking forward to another long drive around the country side....lol wil update pics asap

Great hearing from you again!

Good luck with the tranny case. There is a fair amount of cutting and grinding on the housing to get the 3VZ-FE to mate. Completely doable though.

How did your axles fair on the original swap?

fibrewizard
10-31-2011, 06:39 PM
axle have been great ...........

on original swap i still had the 184 tranny..... and it didnt last long at all...........
but axles held fine...

since the tranny conversion to the e53 camry item i was told that the gt4 axles would be fine... however the rhs (drivers side here) was about an inch too short and kept pulling out of the joint at the hub so had to get a mixed camry axle with gt4 outer joint to give it a little bit more length.........

Car_Barn_Bandit
10-31-2011, 06:50 PM
Gotcha.

I want to find the MR2 turbo tranny for my swap.

How are you liking the gear ratios in the E53? I imagine the original tranny you nuked had quicker acceleration.

fibrewizard
11-01-2011, 08:26 AM
yeah much quicker, but the ratio's in the e53 are perfect for the powerband of the engine as it is the tranny designed for that engine, so uses the power curve really effectively........

a turbo mr2 tranny....e153 would need little bit of selector mods, as they are revesred due to cables coming from other side of tranny...........
but ratio's shouldnt be too bad i imagine, most the mr2's with 3vz-fe conversions dont say anything bad about ratio's so going on that it should be fine.........
