View Full Version : So i got suckered...

into buying a 89 celica gt.....

the ad read altrac/gt4 celica 5spd with blown motor. 300.00

so i called the guy and confirmed that it was indeed a gt4 and it was rust free, etc. i made arrangments for the tow, the regular guy i use was busy so i threw the tow to another buddy who i gave specific instructions to pick up the car ( car was over an hour away ), to make sure its as advertised, no rust, no dents, clean car with 4wd etc. he passes it on to another tow guy but forgets to tell him to check for the awd....needless to say when it shows up i see no fogs and no rear spoiler and a gt badge on the rear.....

so now im stuck with this regular gt with a blown motor, i did some quick reading on this forum and i believe its a pretty straight forward swap for the 3sgte swap.... im more familiar with hondas and honda swaps but i was just under the impression that it was going to be a awd and i was all excited, lol. but if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

i read one of the stickies up top and its my understanding that the 3sgte will bolt up to m 3sfe 5 speed....

sorry if i sound like such a noob....

It will bolt up, but you will need to do some modifications to the wiring.

thanks im just new to toyotas so i feel so lost, lol

Its cool. Just look through the stickies, and of you dont find something, ask questions.

joe's gt

Swap into a gt is pretty easy. Mount locations are the same, only difficult part is wiring. Read the stickies in the forced induction forum as Ryan said and post back when you have specific questions.

thanks guys!

you have a 93 formula? I have a 94....

02-07-2009, 04:59 AM
wow that sucks, but hey $300 wasnt too bad of a deal as is. If the body and interior are in good shape, pretty well worth it. Plus, if you did the 3S swap, you should have a pretty nice little sleeper

02-07-2009, 06:49 AM
yeah i got a 93 formula with a mti 383 forged, afr190's, cc305, fast stand alone ems, full tubular umi performance suspension, mcleod clutch, just waiting on the 12 bolt and the blower then some 700rwhp dyno pulls, LOL. are you on cz28?

yeah i guess it wasnt that bad its just i was all stoked that i was getting a awd celica which is very rare around these parts, the seller has offered a refund for the tow. he himself was under the assumption it was 4wd because a tow driver told him it was in the past and because the owners manual said it was a awd, lol. i believe him because he told me id need a flat deck or atleast tow with dollies.

yeah i will do the 3sgte swap otherwise its just not worth my time, lol. right now im trying to figure out wether or not there is a specific one i should be looking for, i will most likely go thru one of our local jdm suppliers, and research the stock limits i can push it to (unless someone wants to tell me, LOL)

as for the body of the car, its got no rust, no dents, the paint is faded, interior has a tear in the driver seat but thats about it. anyone know if other toyota model seats bolt in? it needs a new windshield and rear quarter glass.

02-07-2009, 07:15 AM
some pics of my winner, lol.

well the dead give away is the no hatchback.... no all tracs were coupes like that lol...

and yes i am on cz28 but i mainly stick to ltxtech

my confusion right now from the reading is which gen 3sgte to get, the first two have that mulitport intake thing happening and then the third gen has the ct20b turbo charger... and because i dont have the first gen to start with to swap parts with.....or should i just get the first gen and upgrade from there...

okay so from some reading im guessing i should go with a gen 2 with the ct20b turbo since it will bolt up without mods.

02-07-2009, 06:14 PM
The best bet is probably a gen2 for a couple of reasons. The gen1 is not a bad motor, but the 2 is obviously going to be newer, younger wire harness etc. The gen 3 is the best in terms of a simple comparison, but the gen2 will be a lot cheaper, easier to get, and easier to get parts for both during the swap and down the road when you need to replace parts. If you go with an aftermarket front mount intercooler, it makes the various gen intercooler option debates a non issue.

02-07-2009, 06:31 PM
thanks for that tip, yes i will be doing a fmic right from the start, ive pretty much decided on the gen 2, and i guess ill upgrade to the ct20b and crank up the boost!!!

would i use the clutch and flywheel for a 3sfe?

also when i look for the engine, should i be looking for a celica version or the mr2 version or it wont matter? i just would rather save the confusion with things like thermostat housings etc...

02-08-2009, 09:56 PM
You'll find plenty of information here to do just about anything to a Celica.

My question is: Why didn't you go look at this car before purchasing it?

What did you pay for it?

Unless you got it for $600 USD or less, you got ripped off hard core.

Otherwise, it looks like a solid car aesthetically, just needs some touching up.

If you can't get that window locally, let me know and we might be able to get one here for you.

02-08-2009, 10:07 PM
i got it because i thought i was getting a gt4, i paid 300.00 cdn for it, so i guess its not that bad but what i thought i was getting was a gt4 with a blown engine, in which case another jdm engine would have been pretty much a bolt in. now im stuck with a gt and a blown 3sfe which i feel is underpowered and if im swapping in another engine its going to be a 3sgte...im just doing as much reading as i can...im just used to hondas and the abundance of info on them, im still very new to toyotas so sometimes i get confused...

02-09-2009, 04:24 AM
would i use the clutch and flywheel for a 3sfe?
You're half right. Clutch yes, flywheel no. The block under the GTE uses an eight bolt crank, the block under the FE will have a six bolt.

02-09-2009, 05:05 AM
okay so retain whatever flywheel comes with the engine and use a clutch for my stock engine/trans but obviously with the ability to handle the higher hp/tq i hope to make. thanks!

so i found a local low kms gen2 3sgte out of a 94 alltrac, i found this site : http://www.gtfour.ca/howtoswap.html and sent off a few emails to the guy because it states that wiring conversions available but haven heard back, how difficult would the wiring be?

04-25-2009, 07:14 AM
94 AllTrac is Gen3 3SGTE.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with doing a swap. Just drop in another 3SFE or 5SFE and use it as a DD or winter beater. Or, just sell it and get an AllTrac if that's what you really want. Lesson learned: never buy a car without seeing it.
Good luck, whichever way you go.

04-25-2009, 06:46 PM
oh for some reason i thought it was a gen 2, maybe i got the years of the celica wrong, problem is every celica i see thats non turbo for parts or is parting out is either high kms or blown engine, lol, and i got the turbo engine with turbo for 500.00 cdn. another problem is i cant ever leave anything stock for some reason....ill probably still use it as a winter beater lol.

04-25-2009, 06:49 PM
OK, I see. $500 is a good deal for that.
Do you also have the ECU, wiring, etc for the Gen2 3SGTE?

04-29-2009, 09:42 PM
i got the harness but its cut at the ecu, ive been emailing one of the megasquirt vendors and i will more than likely run it on that.

now i have to figure out how to delet the ac, no need for that, LOL...

05-02-2009, 12:47 AM
found a link on google on how to delete the ac...here are some pics, thought id do some tear down and inspection before i bolt it in...

popped the valve cover, its dark, but it had writing on the lifters, they were labeled intake and exhaust in like a machinists pen...

was going to do a timing belt/water pump but found it to have been done, still had the intake/exausts labeled, had a brand new toyota belt, toyota water pump and what looked like a fairly new oil pump...

took the down pipe cat off, and its got a egt after the cat, again im not familiar with toyotas but im begining to think this is a jdm engine...

the stock wastegate has two lines coming out of it, pictured its kind of hard to see but theres two bolts in between the line and the other line which im guessing goes to the compressor is not connected to anything, im assuming a boost controller was hooked up at some point???

if i were to put it back to stock would i remove the bolts and re hook the lines up?? any advice on that one??
