As some of you know a few months back I bought a white '84 with the intent to give it to my father for xmas so we could work on restoring it together. Well, I gave it to him and he said he liked it so now we are on to the restoration. He will be buying all of the parts and we will work together installing them. Lucky for him I work for a Toyota dealership so I get parts for cheap.
I will post our progress from time to time to let you guys know how its going.

First order of business was the brake system. I ordered from Toyota: all new rubber brake lines, new pads all around, caliper rebuild kit for the front(rear rebuild kit is discontinued),and a master cylinder rebuild kit amongst a few other things. I ordered the rotors from elsewhere mainly because even at my cost all 4 rotors were like 380 bucks! That would have literally doubled the total cost of everything we got.

We installed all of that last weekend and now we are focusing on the suspension. I just ordered everything that Toyota still offers for the suspension short of the struts, springs and front ball joints. To give an idea on the completeness of this order, it was just under $800 before tax for the suspension stuff with my discount.

Here is a pic of the car

Here is a pic of the brake goodies before the install

I'll get a pic of the suspension stuff when it comes in probably next week.

If it was mine I would have went with coilovers, but my dad wants this for when he retires and doesn't have a company car any longer. Being a somewhat comfortable ride is important to him.

I have them on my MK1 and they are way too stiff for what he is looking for. He was talking about wanting to get a Caddy or a old American car, but it got him the Supra. Something stiff is not what he is looking for.

These pics are from when I bought the car, It looks a little different now.

It has a few problems, such as rust on the hatch and spare tire well and a little on the drivers side door and under the passenger side rear 1/4 window. But all in all it is a solid car. Other than the stereo, I don't think anything has been touched on it since 1984. I just replaced the plug wires which had 1984 stamped on them.

purty sweet. looks to be in really good condition for being made over 20 years ago. That'll be beautiful ride when finished. I would have assumed your father would have wanted american muscle for a retirement car tho, but like you said, wouldn't be too comfortable.

Ever wonder what just under $800 of Toyota parts looks like?

There you have it, just about all of the suspension stuff needed. Just need struts, springs, ball joints and inner tie rods.

He wanted an old 69 Camaro SS or something from around that era. I was looking for one of those for him, but the chepest stuff I could find were rusted out shells with a lot of missing stuff for like $10K. That just seemed pretty ridiculous considering that I bought the Supra for $800 and if he put $10K in to it, it would be a brand new car and run 12s with a 2JZ.

Very nice. Almost too nice. In fact, I think you should trade it for some good old American Iron, like maybe a late 80s Crown Victoria. The wagons are fairly rare and get lots of comments, and I'm told by the Panther enthusiast crowd that they have an unbeatable ride quality, handle well, and chicks dig them.

Let's see...who do you know that has a Crown Vic wagon and would be willing to trade it straight up for a crappy old import...

As tempting as your offer is, I will have to decline for now. It wouldnt be a fare trade really, wait untill we dump a few thousand in to it and then we will talk. Lol.

What are you going to do with the (likely) tired old 5M under the hood?

That's a beautiful mkii - and stock suspension will be perfect for your dad.

Are you going to keep the stock wheels and try to find tires for them, or will you find something else?

renegadex
08-28-2009, 07:38 AM
I'm trying to talk my dad in to getting a 1jz. They are cheap now, have much more power and are much smoother. The supra has close to 200,000k miles on it and the 5m is leaking oil. Surprisingly its not really burning any. We really like the way the stock wheels look so we are going to keep them and try and find some better tires. The suspension and brakes are now in great shape, the drivetrain, body and interior are next on the list.

I do love the stock mkii wheels... the only problem is that the tire choices are quite limited.

1j, hunh? http://forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?t=30037 (http://forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?t=30037&highlight=1jz+tranny)

It's a not insignificant amount of work to swap in a 1j... what would you use for a gearbox?

Here are some pics I took the other day with Andys 1st gen.
I see only a 2nd gen. The '84 Supra is a mkii. Unless there were supposed to be more photos!

08-28-2009, 06:29 PM
I have done several motor swaps in the past so i dont think I will have too much trouble with the 1j. As for transmissions, I will probably use the 5speed that comes with the 1j.

IMO if you plan on putting a 1JZ into that mkii, you might want to beef up the suspension and brakes on that mkii of yours. All that power and torque will make that stock rear suspension squat pretty hard ;) ask me how i know lol

Definitely. Then you get those annoying scraping noises from the rear end. Not terribly pleasant.

Are there any relevant threads on CS that I should look up to uncover your escapades, Zank? :P

We probably wont be doing the 1j for a while or at all. Just trying to get the car in great condition first, then worry about the new engine later. Right now there is a short in the alternator wireing somewhere that I need to find.

UPDATE!

The car is over at Vip09's place. We are replacing the clutch and some of the seals on the engine, transmission and the diff. It turns out the center drive shaft bearing is shot so hopefully that is all I have to replace to get the clunking in the drive line to go away. The old clutch was smooth as glass, and there was black nasty oil from the engine all over it, the flywheel, the back of the block and all over the bell housing. It looked to be the original clutch. If it is, its been in there since 84' and has just over 200k miles on it. Not too shabby.
