Just taking a quick look:

looks like a lot of engine gunk and burned coolant mixed with oil. Good luck on the HG replacement.

she overheated it everyday for about 3-4 months.

Might need new heads and quite possibly a new engine if she warped the mating surfaces.....

Did she ever get the oil changed?? lol

Oh... My....

How did the engine even run? Wow, that looks like someone used roofing tar instead of oil. GL getting that thing back in good shape.

im afraid to clean it up. that thick ass shit might be the only thing keeping the fucker running.

You do have a good point. If you hadn't thought about it already I'd take a machinist ruler with a set of feeler guages and check for a warped head. If you do find it out of spec, you can get em decked if they're not too bad.

I would also drop the oil pan and check the oil pump pickup screen for any kind of clogging or debris. Would suck to get everything back together to find out you have low/no oil pressure. Also might not be a bad idea to pull the cam bearing caps one at a time and check for scoring.

its not worth the time or effort. for all that she might as well buy a new damn car. half the vacuum lines are dry rotted as well.

OEM oil? LOL

time to swap it out with a junk yard motor bro.

that thing is gonna end up needin brand new everything. i find it easier to just replace it with a low mile junk yard motor for like 400 bucks.

I've saw four or five explorers with 4L v6s come in looking like that with blown hgs. It'll clean up.

You didn't look at the blue oval on the hood?

Yeah, that's not worth the time.

3.8L are head gasket prone anyway.

I have seen several.

we keep trying to get her to buy a new car she just refuses... so maybe this one will die completely so she has to buy one.

She's lucky she has you guys.

I would have said buy something else.

well, my dad got laid off, not because of the economy.

and hes charging her to do it, not alot but still money is money.
His unemployment checks arent enuf.

oh nice, as goretro said though its the coolant mixed with oil gunk. Although it usually doesnt look that fried, you said it was your grand mas car, which means she probably barely breaks past 2k RPM. Problem with that is it allows carbon deposits and sludge build up, and most people dont seem to understand getting on it once in a while isnt harsh on the motor, it actually helps blow out excess carbon build up. Good luck getting it cleaned up

my dad decided to put it back together partially dirty so that we didnt block any oil passages

Holy Shit! That looks just like my old basement when the shitter line broke and shit spilled all over the place
