I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the differences btween the s51, s53, and s54 transmissions. I have an s51 and want to know if an s53 or s54 is just a quick swap, or do i need to get different driveshafts. I already know I need a hybrid clutch/pressure plate kit. Thanks.

Welcome to the boards.

First off, it helps for us to know what you know......Please fill out your ride information in "my profile" section of the user control panel. This way we can understand what you're dealing with.

Already, I want to know how you know that you have an S51. I also want to know how you figure you need a hybrid clutch/pressure plate kit.

I can tell you about the S53 and the S54, but I don't want to throw information at you without knowing whether you'll do the right thing with that information.

Sorry, I have a 1996 camry, i know that it has an s51 because it says on my door panel along with the paint code and manufacture info. As for the hybrid clutch/pressure plate i remember reading something about that if i wanted to swap in a 3sgte and keep my stock transmission, not really relevant right now, sorry.I am really just wondering if my axles will connect to an s53 or s54, if they are built with the same housing. I know they do have different gear ratios, but is that all that is different?

Well, I personally have never heard of an s51, but I am guessing, that since it is a s-series tranny, that any other s-series tranny will bolt up. But dont quote me on this.

I agree with 92-gt. While I have never heard of the S51 I can't discount it's existance. You can also find information about the tranny on the firewall dataplate.

Perhaps you should tell us about what exactly you want to do. Tell us about this swap you're planning.

I think this is the basic jist of it... someone can jump in an correct me if I am wrong:

They are all from the same family so parts are interchangeable from the same revision. There were two different revisions, 90-92 and ~93+ with bigger countershaft and better syncros.

The s51 came in the Camry and has a different gear set and taller final drive. I have one in my garage that I was plan on swapping the 5th gear out of to put in my s54 to my drop cruising RPMs down.

The s54 is what came in the NA MR2s including the 3sges and BEAMS and as far as I know there were two different gearings. The one that came with the 5sfe and BEAMS are the same and have a shorter 4th and 5th with a shorter final drive. I know one of the 3sges came with a taller geared version but I can't remember if it was gen 2 or gen 3 or both.

The s53 is the same as the s54 but for the FF layout for the Celica with the shifter linkage on the back. I believe most have the taller gearing.

Clutches should be the same size for all of them as far as I know.

I thought the s53 came in the 4th and 5th gen gt and gt-s, and the s54 came in the 6th gen gt's...

You are correct, S54 did come in the sixth gens.

Just FYI though, 4th gen STs were S53 too.
