FWD fourth gens were filled with Dexron II ATF from the factory.

Personally I still prefer the ATF, but either can be used. Just make sure you don't mix them. If you're just adding fluid, check to see what's in there first. I'm sure you know Grot, but for anyone who doesn't, ATF will be red, gear oil will be amber just like regular oil.

Unless you're me, then your ATF is purple. :)

eh I'd use whatever came from the factory. The problem with such a heavy weight oil is it may not be able to fill all the gaps it needs to. It also gets very thick in the cold and may make shifting harder if the tranny was not designed to handle it, so if the MT came with AT fluid, use AT fluid

That's what the sliding scale is for. 80-90 was a tsb

5th gens came with the gear oil, and there were no transmission changes. Both take the S53. It really is fine to use either.

I should rephrase that then, it should be what the manufacturer recommends. I dont know what they take, because I know some MT's do take AT fluid, just decided to add my $.02 haha

If we really want to get technical, some of the 5th gen S53s did come filled with ATF, but Toyota later released a service bulletin recommending they switch to 75-90 i believe it was.

So, let me get this straight:
1) a TSB recommends that the 5th Gen use 75/90 or 80/90 gear oil over ATF,
2) the 4th and 5th Gens both use the same S53 tranny,
3) it follows that the TSB would apply to the 4th Gen as well, right?
I've always used ATF with no problems...

^ Yep. I believe there was a TSB for the fourth gens as well, or that one covered them. I don't remember off hand.

It basically goes like this; Gear oil for longer transmission life, ATF allows for easier shifting. Toyota switched the recomendation because of the extra protection the gear oil provides.

But yeah, I've still always used ATF with no problems. The coupe's on 222k miles, and the only issue is the classic fried third gear syncros. Hell, the hatchback's auto has three times the problems and half the miles! :)

Very interesting information. Thanks.
Well, for the time being, I'll stay with ATF too. Might switch later on....
