going from 4th gen celica tranny to 6th. Id like to know if a 4th gen (s53/3sge) clutch kit/flywheel/axles ect. is compatible with the s54(5s-fe) transmission or if Ill need to mix and match.

From what ive read its more or less a straight forward swap

Anyone have experiece doing it with any insight or advice?

The s53 is what came in the 5th gen gt/gts.

The s54 came in the 6th gen gt.

It is just a direct swap for 5th gens, but idk about 4th gens.

i guess im wondering if the clutches and such would be the same. Compare to 5th gen celicas if you want they use the same block as 4th gens.

4th gens did not come with the 5sfe.

Only 5th and 6th gens came with the 5sfe(as far as celicas go)

5s-fe and 3sge share are essentially the same engines except the 5s-fe was stroked to 2.2 with a different head design. Blocks are identical

Yes, but I dont think the s53 came in the 4th gen celica.

it did, but back on topic, Id like to know if they changed the dimension of any of the clutch related parts when they changed from s53 to s54 models

They should be the same. Check on 1sttoyotaparts.com and see if the part numbers are the same.

Flywheel is different. But. I think that only affects the way it bolts to the engine. The bolt pattern is slightly farther apart for the 3sge than it was for the 5sfe. Found that out half way through my engine swap.

Actually this post is useless because you're not changing the engine. Also, where'd you get a decent s54? I need to get my hands on one cheap. Eventually.

92-gt, all S block Celica's from 86-93 were equipped with the S53. Please don't keep fighting when you don't know the answer. The 2S-E, 3S-FE, 3S-GE, and 5S-FE all used it. Whether it is the the second, third, or fifth revision, the blocks are the same where the transmission mounts(excluding the GTE).

Meph, as I recall the clutch components are the same, but I'm not 100% on that one. The CV's will be the same. Flywheel shouldn't be any different either.

lurking lots of celica forums :P (gen specific ones like 6gc.net)

Oh! 6gc.net is back up. I thought it was down when I checked a while back. Thanks!

That is why I told him to check the part numbers on 1sttoyotaparts.com.

All things will bolt up no problem. I need to find a s54 too cuz my s53 syncros are crap. But ill guess if I can't find one cheap ill have to wait till next year for my swap it comes with it :-)

found mine on car-part.com. Searches local junkyards inventories, but doesn't catch them all so make sure u call some as well. Forums are a great option as well. Its a great tranny IMO. Have one on my 3s and has held up to red line shifts for 30k just fine.

bumping old thread... I'm looking at getting an s54, I found one with 191 xxx km. which is about 118 xxx miles for you guys in the states. its a decent price. however i was just wondering if all s54 transmissions are the same. I am asking this becuase i know the 90-91 s53's had the synchro problem and they fixed it in 92-93. So does anyone know if an s54 out of a 1994 GT is any different than that out of a 1999 GT?

^^ All your components will definately be the same......

the only thing that I can even think of that would be different with your car would be a speed sensor compared to a cable.

I'm talking about overall differences in s54 transmissions, like do they all have triple cone 12t and 3nd gear synchros and double cone 3rd and 4th gear synchros. I just want to know weather a transmission from 1994 is the same as one from 1999. did they make any changes to the transmission?

as far as the synchro changes im not 100% certain, but all celica gt transmissions 94-99 are s54s.

any s54 is gold compared to the s53. They all have dual cone synchros which is a huge plus over the shitty s53 ones. Only thing u'll have to swap out is the speedo cable. Good luck.

ok so I've located a tranny locally, but I am wondering what clutch to use. I am assuming a 94-99 clutch kit will be fine? anyone care to chime in and let me know what clutch I should be getting.

Oh blah blah blah... just because they had a bad batch of Stage 2 clutches...

I cut to the chase and just don't buy sprung clutches. Period. :D

I haven't heard of really anyone having problems with Spec Stage 3s....
