Hey guys,

Im looking into an s54 transmission to replace my current s53. The gear ratios are the same but the final drive is different ratio. Ive found a low km s54 for 100 bucks but the final drive is 4.176:1 vs my current 3.944:1.

Is it possible to swap the diffs to get the same ratios?

I would just get the s54 and leave it alone for the simple fact that it is a much stronger transmission and it is all around a better assembly than the s53.

Why do you want to change the final drive?

id like to keep the gears as long as possible for MPG's, and if its possible to swap, id like to try it for fun

don't go through that trouble. if it ain't broke don't fix it. Believe me, u will do more harm than good if u try to mod stuff that shouldn't be modded. But do get that s54. I have one on my 3s ( didn't have enough time to find e153 and perform the modifications) and it is very strong. i believe it has dual cone synchros which are a savior compared to the crappy s53 ones. Just swap out the electrical speedo cable on the s54 with ur manual one, it takes like 5 minutes. But def. go with s54. Awesome tranny and has held up to even my 3s power very nicely.

whats the RPM at 100km/h in 5th? assuming you run the same tire size as the 6th gen celica, will I need to change the speedo to account for the RPM to MPH change in the gearing?

2800 rpm for me, so still in the happy "saving fuel" range.

Hahaha.. you don't have an S54, though... :p

There's a calculator on here that's an excel file that has all the different gear ratios and shows what rpm is what speed in each gear... just have to find it...

BY JOVE, You're RIGHT old boy! :hehe:

I read through, then read the post before mine and lost my train of thought. Sorry about that.

Oh well.... we still <3 you.

I guess the point is... there isn't enough difference between E-series, S53 and S54 to really worry about the gas mileage.

Really shouldn't be much difference with most any of the 4th-5th gen trannys, as at 100km they're all supposed to be within the 2-3k rpm range. Right? :)

Yep.

I'm at 70mph at 3k rpms, i think S54 is at 3200-3400 at 70mph, and Alltrac is at about 3200 i think.

I'm at about 2600 at 100kms.

S53 at 70MPH around 3000K
S54 at 70MPH around 3500K
E150F at 70MPH around 3200K
E153 at 70MPH around 3100K

You need to re-calc those numbers mang! :D
We're dealing with a different base number than the one you used. 100 kilometers/hour = 62.137 miles/hour, so it would be a different RPM range as well.

You guys do realize that lower RPMs of engine operation doesnt necessarily mean less fuel consumption.

You do realize that the more work your engine has to do to increase or maintain speed, at a lower RPM youre going to use MORE fuel.

I have firsthand experience of watching my Injector Duty Cycle on a DSM, and consistently if Im cruising 30-35mph in 3rd gear, vs 4th gear. Ill use less injector duty cycle in the higher gear than the lower gear.

Injector duty cycle and fuel consumption is based off vacuum. The less vaccum you pull, the more fuel you use. If you have to put your foot into it more, to do the same work, youre using more fuel.

Ill bet you woudnt save ANYTHING on gas by doing this transmission swap.

I could have sworn I've heard of people losing some MPG (minor amount, ie 1 or 2 highway) swapping from S53 to S54.

I for one, would like to see if this is possible, I've heard of it, but once, long ago... and my mind needs refreshing
