View Full Version : Buying a GT-S

11-06-2008, 06:33 AM
Well, long story short, a guy I know is getting rid of his '87 GT-S, and is selling it to me for $400. :woot:

Hatch window is broken, and there's front driver's side damage on the bumper/fender due to being backed into. The fenders have the classic rust as well. Yes, I was surprised to find out that the body can get worse than my coupe's. :hehe: It does run and has no other major problems, though.

So yeah, the car's pretty rough, but don't worry - I know I don't need another project.

Plan is to first convert the coupe's brakes, that way I'll have everything I need including the wheels. That cuts the cost way down.

Step two is to put the tranny in the coupe. It's in better shape and has less miles.

Step three is to find a place to keep the motor/ecu/wiring. I don't want a GE right now, but who knows what I may decide later...

I'll probably take the interior too, and whatever other spare parts I need. After that I'll sell it to a scrapyard.

So that's my plan. The guy's going to be looking for another car and I've gotta put the money aside, so I'll probably be getting it in early December. The coupe just may make the Dragon...

Rape it for parts and sell the shell for scrap to a steel yard or wrecker. :D

Yeah, I feel bad but it'll get raped HARD. Poor thing... There's no way I can keep another one right now though, and I want those brakes!

No... Crisco.

You WANT a GE.

RIGHT now.

11-06-2008, 01:08 PM
nice score. sounds like you'll make money.

Yeah, I'd just build up the 3S-GE and swap it into the coupe, since you can drive the coupe as is, you can take your time on the engine build.

No time or money for the full engine swap right now, man! :)

AIRC the wiring would be plug-and-play, but it's going to be hard enough finding time to just get the tranny swapped over. And no, engine and tranny together isn't viable at the moment either. :)

That reminds me, I've gotta get the hatchback back together just in case...

Don't you have a bunch of vacation time? Just take... 3-4 days and do eeet!

yeah i pulled the 3s-ge with the harness connected,
then pulled the left wiring harness/ fuseboxes (all of em)
all the behind dash harnesses
swapped em over from a hatch to a coupe, no major issues! except the diffences between the 87 and the 89...
see my swap post under this forum?

oh yeah the ge, PULLS in the coupe.... almost 1.3 sec faster 0-60
and the coupe with all the a/c ripped, and such is so much lighter...
my car now is a ten to me, except for a leaky HG and funky back tire...

11-15-2008, 08:36 AM
oh when you ripp it some easily changeable parts are...
1.steering wheel
2.brake package
3.suspension components
4.gauge cluster (remember the taillight failure box on drivers side back seat area)
5.interior wiring harnesses!
6.exaust components ( hatch to coupe fit perfect!)
the only things i couldnt swap was the winshield and the automatic A/C servos...(even though i could have i stayed with the slider panel cause its lighter)

Shift boot?

Shift boot?
I've actually decided I'm going to assess it's condition. Provided that the interior is decent and it has power everything, I may scrap my hatchback instead. Seeing as my hatch will be the only one not running... Anyway, my hatch is auto.

It's taken me a while to accept, but my hatchback is really the better parts car. I've got the rear hatch for the GT-S, the front light components, and a spare 3S-FE for the coupe in it. Why tear apart a running GT-S? I'm seriously considering just fixing/upgrading the GT-S for the Dragon.

I knew I'd be conflicted and that this was a stupid idea, but there's no way I'm passing it up...

Nice man! cant beat a running and driving car for $250!! Congrats!

Good score for only $250 :)

Obviously it's too late now, but you should still carfax that car. The front PS quarter panel seems to be a slightly different color and may have been in a wreck...

Dude! $250! :)

The coupe's whole front end doesn't match, and I bought it for $300. The GE could have been blown and this would still be an awesome deal. :bigthumbu

With that said, I was already planning to have a buddy of mine check out the chasis. :) Just pulling it around the building and starting it once today I've also noticed that there's a huge exhaust leak, and the PS pump is hella fuxxored. You should hear that thing whine!

But yeah, still deciding exactly what I'm going to do. I think for now I'm gonna find a hatch and get it titled. If I decide to keep it the project will be on hold 'till after April. Gotta make sure the coupe can make it to TN and back!
