View Full Version : 4AFE Generation Identification + 5AFE Swap Questions

Hello All,

I'm new here, but I'm a longtime member of your sister site mr2oc.com.

My brother's killed his 5th Gen's engine on on a trip to Florida a few months ago (major knocking and smoke). Long story short, my Dad towed him to their house and he bought a temporary beater. Now I haven't looked at his car yet, but in the interest of time, I'm wanting to just drop in a 5AFE and call it quits. My question is related to what generation of the 4AFE my brother has. His car is a 93 STX, which I know has a 4AFE, but there seems to be some mixed information out there on when the engines were actually upgraded to 2nd generation status. Here is a picture of my brother's engine:

Can anyone tell me what generation this 4AFE is?

Also, Like I said, I'm planning on swapping a JDM 5AFE engine into the car. From the limited threads I've read on the subject it's a direct swap both physically and electrically. Anyone know if that's 100% true?

I appreciate any help!

1st gen 4afe

used from 87-93

87-92 in the corolla/prizm
90-93 in the celica

5afe will work but its a 1.5

id just get another 4a or use a 7afe bottom end if u want a lil more ommfph

Just out of curiousity on my 4AFE instead of saying EFI it says EFI-S. So what does that mean?

That's an early 4afe... the injectors are on the intake... the late models 4a and 5a have the injectors on the head... the 5afe if you get an early model will drop right in... use your valve cover, distrubuter, alternator, intake manifold, and exhaust... etc... it all bolts right up... Only problem... NO PARTS IN THE STATES FOR THIS ENGINE... I did this in a 93 Celica ST (not in my sig) and It has a stretched rod and I can't for the life of me find out if it uses the same connecting rod as the 4afe... The 5afe and 4afe seem almost indentical just a little small pistons... Hell even the Cams appeared the same... car ran just as good as when it had the 4afe in it... no real noticeable difference to me.... g/f ran the poor thing low on oil and KABOOM... but easy as pie swap as the motors are vertical mount unlike the gt's on an angle and plenty of room to work... pull the motor and trans it's easier... just angle the closer to the passenger fender... hope this helps

85gtsblackman: Thank you that's exactly what I needed :)

DaneDog311: Wow! Thanks for the extra info. I knew it was going to be hard to find parts if the 5AFE starts acting up, but since the 4AFE was such a trooper for 200k + miles I'm hoping the internals on the 5AFE would be ok for the next couple 100k's :)

Thanks for the help!

I did have one question I thought of as I was eyeballing a 5AFE on ebay... External stuff is going to be the same as 4AFE externals isn't it? I mean a 4AFE Timing belt and clutch should fit on a 5AFE right?

yeppers... it's identical... i think the only real difference was the intake system which lacked the egr.... same flywheel and timing components... I used a new belt on mine... for a 4afe of course

Oh EFI is Electronic Fuel Injection... I would assume the S just means Sequential not sure though...
