Mazda MX-6.

Second gen from 93-up.

Someone on here has got to have at least driven one. I always liked the way they looked, and apparently they have a fairly large support, considering it used ford's oh so popular 2.5 litre v6....

So learn me. Learn me good.

I once owned a 626 which is very similar, mine came with the I4 though. Overall I thought it was a great car it trucked to 200.000 miles before I got rid of it, and for the right price I would consider another one or a mx6.

it was a 95' btw. I bought it with 80,000 miles drove it til 200,000 nothing major broke on the way. I really did like that car.

One of my former employees was really into Probes, I made a custom intake for one of his. It was the L4 though...

In any case, would you just pick a project and go with it already?!? :)

It's not a project. Still on the search for a daily that really reaches out and grabs me as being a great deal, fun, nice, and reliable. :)

I'm not real comfortable going farther down the "snooze scale" than a Celica for a daily, unless it's balla luxo-sedan.

This just seems, at least on paper, what the Celica should have been. 2700lbs, V6, manual, 160hp (and they put damn near that to the wheels.) Not to mention they get decent gas mileage, to boot.

Well, if you find a v6. It wasn't the base trim. A friend of mine had a 96 4cyl. It was decent, certainly not fast. It was a little slower than my 6gen GT. If I recall correctly I think they put out numbers between a 7afe and a 5sfe. As far as build quality.. it didn't really seem up to a Celica. The third brake light bar in the spoiler kept falling out. The engine bay seemed overly cluttered and silly to me for such a small motor, but overall it was a decent car.

I had a 1993 MX6. It was a POS!!

The motor was blown when I picked it up (to part it out), but it had only 65000mi.

The materials quality seemed very cheap, and I have seen alot of them with mechanical problems.

And when all is said and done, it is just a Ford Probe.

The one(s) i'm looking at are V6s and 5speed. :)

Thanks for the input. :wiggle:

It was a pos for sure though.

Here's an MX-6 that might be more reliable

there POS"s friend had one with a 2871r on it... really wasnt worth the time for the power he made off of his v6 5 speed version... bone stock I think the car pulled in the 16s? It was such a POS..even with the 2871r on it which was really efficient it didnt tap 13s.

Your friend needs to learn to drive or start with a motor that isn't pre-fucked lol.

They're mid 15s cars stock.

For all the negative feedback on this thing, i think i'm just going to get one to shut you all up.

It's a daily driver.... i don't care about quarter mile, i don't care about how well it likes a turbo, as long as it's not going to randomly explode and kill me, or randomly explode and make me replace an engine, or the brakes fail, or anything like that....

Is there any reason why i wouldn't buy a clean one for $1000?

You guys are totally missing the point here. I have a project, i don't want another one.

It's a nice-looking car that happens to perform better than ANY front wheel drive Celica barring the 7th gen GTS, and gets comparable gas mileage. What i'm asking is.... what do i have to look out for on this car? Are they prone to catastrophic failures or very expensive repairs?

I dont' want to hear "OMG THE INTERIOR LIEK SUX LOLZ" unless you want to go in more detail and completely refute what i've seen in the multiple examples that i've sat in that were almost completely on par with Toyota's interior.

the reason the engine was blown was the previous owner wasafucking idiot and beat the living shit outta it.

I've had a couple friends that had the Probes with automatic transmissions. The auto tranny blows but otherwise they seemed like good cars, the interior parts had problems with staying on. Haven't look into them in a while, check out probetalk.com

Have you considered the B13 SR20DE Sentras? Or something with the Mazda B engine? Escort GT? Protege LX?

If it was a good car, they coulda beat the shit out of it and it would have held up more then 65,000 mi., lol

Really though, I have seen tons of them with major problems.

Borinal had one. It was actually a decent car. Smooth little engine, decent gas mileage, engine liked to rev, it wasnt SLOW, but it wasnt FAST. 160hp I think is what it had, car drove pretty decent. I kinda liked it.

Then he developed rod knock, threw a rod, and parted it out. Thats when he got his MR2.

Id say for 1k its a decent car, but fuck Ben, how many damn cars do you really need?

I don't know about the v6s, for all I know, they do suck. I will vouch for the pre 96 sohc and dohc inline 4s. If they get oil changes and resonable treatment they survive well into the 250,000 mile range.

I've noticed some mx6 bashing going down. I wonder if it's v6 related?

I have owned volvo's, honda's, and toyota's. All of which have given me way more problems then my mazda 626 I4 ever did. I bought that car with 80,000 miles and it made 200,000 before some bitch smashed her. Besides basic maintenance, all it needed was brakes, clutch, intake manifold gasket. I call that a good run. In comparison my celica has been a complete piece of shit to me. I bought it with like 84,000 m and put a couple thousand on it when it spun a bearing. I changed the oil the day I bought it and checked the level religiously. I've done nothing but baby the car. I blame the previous owner though, not the car.

Probes came in turbo
1rst Gen Probes came in turbo. The 2nd Gen GT was a V6.

The MX-6 is a 2nd Gen Probe.

They are a FWD Ford. Honestly you could do better or worse. Ford didn't do too bad with their FWD cars. I have owned several Escorts, and those little bastards are fun.

They aren't super fast, but they aren't balls out slow either.

Go for an MX-3 with a V6.

The Probe is actually a pretty decent handler, I drove a 91 turbo a long time ago and it was fairly agile and responsive as I recall. 2.2 sohc per a wiki, so it would probably respond very well to mild street mods and a bigger turbo.

This has been put on hold anyways.... Much rather wait a little bit to see what happens with another situation. I figure i have until the end of october anyways...

If it comes down to it, though, i'm going to be looking for one of these, rock bottom prices, and everything points to them being solid cars.
