Hello,
So I have a little question about my 5th gen gt-s (93 fwd 5spd)

Now this is the first car I've driven with less than 6 cylinders and also my first manual so I'm not used to the habits of a car like this. Thankfully though it only took me a couple of days to get decent at driving a manual (thanks to the internet) and I don't think I did any damage to the car so I'm good there.

Background information aside, when I'm driving down the highway at about 70mph the cars doing a good 3500rpm and it seems a bit high to me because that puts 80 up over 4000. Are these rpm's normal for a celica or did the previous owner mess with something he shouldn't have?

that seems normal... these cars rev relatively high....its just the way they are...

The automatics rev lower, but that is the correct average RPM for 70mph.

the trannsmissions are geared really low in celicas its pretty typical.

hmm thats high, cuz when i drive 70mph/112km/h im doing like 2500/2700rpm in 5th gear.

i got a 3sge engine

That's about reigt for a 5sfe with a non lightened flywheel. Welcome to the board too this is the place to be for celicas.

Undrgrowd: the 3sge is geared slightly differently which is why yours is different

The 3SGE has squat to do with gearing.

The transmission handles all of that.

It would be my guess that his tranny would have a lower (numerically higher) final drive, thus resulting in a lower rev at 70mph.

Sadly, we here in the states got a 5S-FE, the rest of the world gets a 3S-GE. I think we get the same transmissions though (S53 for 5th gens).

Thanks for the posts guys.

Main reason I ask is the previous owner hated oil changes for some reason and I got the car with a knock, about 3 weeks later it threw a rod on the highway at about 4k. Now I'm a bit leary of driving on the highway from it even though I bought a new (used) engine for it that is knock-less.

I think the 3sge came with the s54 and as murg said. Its the trans not the engine as I was trying to imply but I failed. final drive is higher for the s54 and the gears are shorter

Agreed, your RPMS are normal for the 5SFE with manual XMSN. My 93 GT-S with the 5SFE and S53 manual XMSN behaves the same way.

If you don't like it then you'll really love it when you hit 5000 RPM in that car.

Flywheel has no bearing on the transmission's gearing.

under 3k is normal... i used to drive a AE86 @80mph its 4500 rpms... just like a integra type R or s2000.

No. Under 3k is not normal for a manual transmission GT/GTS in 5th gear at 70mph.

Depends, what tranny are you running?
