So I need a new dd, Theres a Solara thats a few minutes away from me a 99 4cly 5sfe 104k, auto :(, but the car is only going for 3700 what I talked the dealer into today drives great I couldnt really find any issues other than needs new tires looks like it needed a valve cover gasket but other than that I really couldnt find any issues....I really just dont have any experience with solaras.. its laid out just like a celica 5sfe setup would be.

3SGTE Solara... Hmmm...

I would go for it. It seems like a decent deal, and it is a Toyota.

I love that body style the most. Tried looking for one in good shape for a Daily Driver.

Seen a nice black one around town had projection headlights, lowered, nice 18"s and powered with a 2jzge. Very clean and Smooth.

But my opinion to you is also go for it even though it's a 4cly.

I call Solaras "the pretty Camry." :hehe:

I'd go for it. She'll run forever as a DD.

Kinda like J-Lo. Nice looking in the front but a little big in the back. Should be a good DD. Sounds like a good price.

They're definitely camrys in every way. Don't expect the fact that it's a coupe to make it handle like a sporty car, they sure don't. But.. just fine for a DD, like any camry :)

Bring it down to Tennessee and we will run in on the Dragon.

I will get the Buick and we will have a face off of the fat poor handling pigs!

I don't know, I have always owned big cars (Camaros are considered small cars, but they are still huge compared to a Celica,) but after getting into the Celicas, everything else seems big and unwieldy.

Im an absolute idiot... kinda, I had 1000 into the duce with everything... I bought that car for 700 dollars, the kid thought it was fubared who I bought it from brought it home all it needed was a new alternator belt, got it running that night took it into inpection the next day and it was a good running car... I sold it for 3200.... that car paid for what I would of had to pay for school + books this semester after my loans...... I bought a friends civic which is ending up being the most unreliable vehicle ever... while I am putting a new motor in that pos I need something to drive... after the new motor is in the pos civic I cannot stand I will sell that car.

one more note , the more I look around at these solaras I cant believe what these cars go for.... I meen these are good cars! Its just nobody wants a underpowered 2 door coupe.... th 4 door camrys still go for high dollar but these cars seem to have really good reliability other than a small problem with the charcole canister that happens on almst every v6 but a 10 min replacement wont hurt.... I just cant get over how cheep these cars go for...

Yeah... the v6 aren't even underpowered. They'd probably even handle ok if you did suspension work. The 4cyl auto are definitely slow-sauce though.

When I saw it I about shit my pants! Its a 2000 with absolutely not one scratch or dent! Interior was mint, and had JBL speakers in it that make a nice lil bump when I turn up the bass. All leather, all power, very classy interior. I really like it.

Oh and when the civics pass by, dont worry, 19celica90 don't play around...

Ahhh Toyota Solara... the poor man's Lexus SC300.

That mother will last forever. Won't turn worth a shit, won't accelerate worth a shit. Gas mileage might be alright. But I bet you anything it will have a comfy ride and last forever.

And that's all you really need for a DD, right?

If you don't get this car you will regret it.

It has 109k, which is a lil high for a 2000. But, given the condition of the car and how smooth she drives, I just overlooked the mileage. It is very hard to find Solara's with appropriate mileage on them without paying over 8k. I don't know why people rack up the miles on these cars, but they do.

Mileage though, I think, shouldn't be a big worry. The one you are looking at has 104k?? Am I right? And really that isn't that much, even for a Toyota. The 1mz is very strong and durable. But, its a boat compared to my celica. It has a good turning radius, the same as my 96 Camry XLE. But, you have really feel its size when your trying to turn fast or in a very tight corner. Its also wider than my Celica, I noticed when I parked it in my garage that it took up more space.

Overall, its a good car and I do not regret buying it. I've never had an 1mzfe under the command of my right foot, but it zips when you gas it. Even the exhaust note is very authoritative. I just wish mine came with the gold emblem package :( But I'm just going to get them off ebay and slap em on! :bigthumbu

The one you're looking at looks great and is at a great price. Sure it has a 5sfe and it may lack power, but, the 5sfe is as we all know is extremely durable. The 5s can go 250k+ with just normal maintenance. If I were you, I'd snatch it up quick! Good luck and let us know whatcha did!

OK......I just gotta say this........the Solara is a girl car. My mom got one not long ago. But make no mistake....the Celica is not a girl car. I realize you see lots of girls driving them, but that was not the target demographic. Parents with limited cash buy their girls used, reliable Toyotas. In the last 20 years that would've been a Camry or a Celica. And don't forget the ads from '88-'93.....I remember those ads.......the TV ad from 1989 displayed AWD prowess as the Celica drove across desert sand dunes. They were aimed at men aged 18-35......same as Supras.......exactly the demographic that didn't have the cash to buy the vehicle, hence the demise of both product lines.

That is my personal opinion I'm sticking to it!!!

Oh yeah, girl car or not...........I'd dd a Solara.........not a newer one though........I like the '03 body style.

thats what did it for me when I was a child, I seen that at the drive threw... I still remember that to this day... 3 alltracs driving across the desert all meet up on top of one hill three of them just sitting there on top it was such a bad ass comercial in the early 90s... thats what did it for me!

but anyways, I found a 99 v6 sle in philly I am prolly going to pick up next weekend for a stellar price... its a little more miles on it but its leather everything jbl system one owner... Im not really afraid to pick this up with the mileage being that Im seeing 1mz owners going almost more reliably than 5s owners... most of the guys on the camry forums have 200k + on their factory 1m/e15x trans stock!!! Its unreal..

08-25-2008, 03:00 AM
this is why i keep saying a 1mz swap is the best bang for the buck in a celica, your engine will last 3/4ths as long as a 22re :hehe:

oh yeah btw fail on honda, shoulda bought a toyota truck

I have the V6 Solara. It's been my and my wife's daily driver for the past 6 years. Reliability is 10/10. Power is 7/10. Comfy is 8/10. Handling is 6/10. Value is 10/10. Look is subjective. I'm temped to take it (or my other DD) to the dragon if my Celica is not ready by that time :lolhittin

By the way, if you are looking for a V6 one, make sure they don't have any oil sludge. It seems to be problem with non-maintained 1MZFE.

^^ Reading about it seems to be a issue with some of the 1mz's if not properly cared for...But your car looks great the solara I am looking at in philly is the exact same color...

I think Im going to buy it..Im prolly going to philly this weekend and grab it it has 120k on it but for 4k I think its a pretty steller deal and these thing go 200k+ on the solara/camry forums. Wish it was a 5 speed but oh well.. its one owner car and looks to be in great condition.

I caved in and bought a solara... I have been talking to this lady off and on all week from philly... sold the civic went out to philly and bought this car... I love this car everything is amazing about it other than the fact that its auto... v6 sle leather everything I got this car for 4k with just over 100k miles on it and the car is clean as can be these are amazing cars to daily drive.... driving it back from the highway I was getting almost 30mpg in a car this big with a 1mz in it I was really impressed with it.... overall these are really really good cars Im really glad I got this deal.

Congrats. You will love all the gadgets in that car (compare to older MR2 or Celica). Mine got 28 mpg on highway (75-80 mph) while carrying lot of stuff driving from FL to NC. You will be temped not to mod it. Parts are cheap and much easier to find than the Alltrac/MR2. It is also easier to work on.

PhillyDRFT

I'm in agreement with everyone else. 4k sounds way too low. I would expect 7-8k.

How's the MPG?

^^^ its great, I would recommend one of these cars to anyone....

Gary is right theres so many little gadgets and fun stuff and the interrior is layed out so great in the SLE model, its just an awesome car to drive around town.

I bought the auto so I would not be tempted to mod this and put my spare money into the mr2.

As far as mileage driving it back from philly I got around 28-29mpg......

But for a car that weighs as much as this and only makes 200hp it definately feels like it has decent power to it and the mileage is great!

cool, there decently fast cars if you get a s/c for it normally the guys on solaraguy(their version of ctech lawls!) go 13s with a smaller pulley, but the s/c with bolt ons and smaller pulley normally at 6.5psi is good for a 300hp 1mz and they hold out pretty well.

I want to get some decent springs for this car and wheels and call it a day but I would rather work on my mr2.
