View Full Version : Knock Sensor Compatability?

The Celica is alive!!!! But it is throwing a code 52 now. Knock sensor.... I think that I may have dropped it while it was out of the car, which probably fried the little thing. So I think that I need a new one. Problem is- Napa wants $190 for a new one. Ive called the local junkers and they have a few 92-93 Camrys with the 5sfe. They also have a 93 ST185.

So my question is:
Do I need a 5sfe knock sensor, or could I use one from the 3sgte? Or could I use one from something else? I think the biggest factor here is the voltages that the different knock sensors put out. If they put out the same voltage range as the 5sfe's does, it shouldnt matter, right? Does anyone know what the "proper" voltage range for the 5sfe's knock sensor is?

I just wanna know what my options are..... Im a little nervous that once I get to the junkers all those cars will have had their engines yanked.

Another 93 trac is junked??? Christ... that makes at least 3... Unless it's not a 185, but a 184 (GT/GTS).

The 5S-FE in the 92+ Camry's should be the same, I was just at my local Pull-A-Part this morning, they have a 94 Celica, if I had known you needed a knock sensor I could have grabbed it.

More than that; I wrecked one several years ago.
There's probably at least half [~ 40] that are wrecked at this point....

Could also be an MR2.

92-95 GTE is the same as the 5S one IIRC.
The 90/91 GTE one just has a different connector.
Pretty much all Toyota knock sensors are 0 - 1 V.

How bad is the AllTrac?

Idk what kinda shape the AllTrac is in as I havent gone there yet, sorry. And the connector can be easily changed on one of those GTE ones. This has been an engineering project from day one, so I can make anything work as long as the voltages are correct. Thanks alltracman. So are you saying almost any Toyota knock sensor could work? If so, problem solved.......

You can also use a GM knock sensor if you use the adapter fitting. I'd stick with TOYOTA, but it is an option.

The GM sensor works off a different frequency, so it won't protect your engine as well as a Toyota one.

IMO if it doesn't work right, it's not an option.

Sorry for getting off topic.
