View Full Version : No oil, spun bearings, scored crank.

So I did a dumb thing. I assumed my celica, which has run strong since 2001 would be just fine on its normal dose of synthetic oil for 5000 miles. After all... it had been doing just fine for the last 100,000 miles or so.

Not so much. Come up on 4500 miles... I had just gone to the WalMart to grab my new jug of Mobil 1 and the Mobil 1 filter..... Suddenly.... a not so good noise.

Take it to my one mechanic who just instantly says "need a new engine." Well, whats the problem? "I don't know, but I do know you'll need a new engine."

OK... so my wife insists that we take it to the dealership.... $386 later they tell us "yup, bearing toasted, crank scored... new shortblock... $4500."

Obviously we can source another engine cheaper.... my background is in Ford 4-Cylinders.... so I'm not really wanting to take this on myself, as its my daily driver (or was supposed to be for the next year or so until my new car is coming off the line at Ford).

I guess in a nutshell.... who's had their 1ZZ replaced with a take-off, and how much did it run you? Anyone in SoCal recommend a shop to get it done fast and easy?

do you check your oil at all?

well, for the record, even with synthetic I'd never go over 3k miles before changing oil. Its probably that you had a leak you were unaware of and you managed to run out of oil. You should always check oil level between intervals as well
