Power, Price, Reliability. The holy trinity.

Basically, you can get power for less, but it won't be reliable.
Or, you can get reliable power, but it won't be cheap.
Or you can just get a low cost, but reliable motor (what you already have).

Cheap, Fast, Reliable.

Pick 2.

You can be Cheap and Reliable (like a Celica ST is in its base form)

You can be Fast and Reliable (but not cheap)

You can be Cheap and Fast (but wheres the Reliable?)

Then you have to decide how you want it done. So Pick 2 and go from there :)

Well, I'll be the one to say,
All these guys are right, there isn't much cheap power.
But you can always throw on a header, short ram or cold air intake and exaust system for at least a small but noticeable gain.

You could bump your timing up a few degrees and run on higher octane gas, that works decently as well.

Other then that, the only power that is going to be cheaper then a turbo would maybe be a camshaft, but I don't know anything about getting reground camshafts for the ST...

+1!!! Bingo!
But unless you plan to track your car you probably won't appreciate and even notice the changes on the street.

Ways to make your car faster...

1: Bigger Engine
2: Bigger Brakes
3: Better Tires
4: Give me the keys

Weld the head on, and run a 150shot through that thing. It'll move. Keep an eye on craigslist, the whole project might run you $350.

But seriously, i'd just boost it if it's a healthy motor. You can do it for cheap. Start trolling those junkyards.

Everyone really has said it already... power = dollars! I tried the cheap "power adders," when I was a n00b. It did absolutly nothind except make the car sound more aggressive. As far as actual power, I got nothing. All and all I think we all go through the phase of wanting cheap power. Sometimes we even find it. lol but in the end: power = dollars. In my case it resulted in a motor swap. So... what's your cup of tea?

an ST is not a good base for power. its a 1.6 liter, correct? either enjoy what you have, or do a 3sgte motor swap. theres your fast and reliable, but cheap? nooooo.
or theres always option 3.. sneaks up to your buddy's cars at night and back the undercarrige with lead. making their cars slower will make you look like your going faster

He's got a 6th gen, 7afe 1.8 litre.

But that's all academic in differences lol.

I find that chips are a good compliment to a sandwich, or as a light snack food whilst drinking. I prefer the bitter chips, like salt & vinegar or dill pickle flavors. Then again, I have a thing for strong flavors.

In all honesty car chips just waste your money, having your ECU tuned for engine mods, not a waste of money, but that's if you do some aggressive mods.

they waste more gas and give you the same power you started with.

Generally speaking, and though I don't know exactly, there must be some worthy differences because it is a very popular motor for teh turboz. I have 6g/ST myself but I have no idea why one would bother turboing, then again, I'm not turbo knowledgeable. I enjoy the 7afe for the insane gas mileage and almost soundless operation of the motor. Here's a good collection of 7afe turbo info (and other) compiled by one of our mod's here(and there), pressure2, over at 6gc.net- http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=29705

They are also a good base for a 7AGE hybrid.

Same basic axiom (slightly re-worded) has been applied to mountainbike parts for years ..... cheap, light, strong - pick 2 ;)

It's actually a fairly standard thing for life in general. Hell, you could apply it to prostitutes if you really wanted to.

just do the i/h/e setup and call it quits. you can advance the timing 3 or 4 degrees also.
