Does the 1993 5sfe models use R134 type freons? I've recharged freon in other cars but I'm a bit confused about the celica. Where is the low side valve located? Is it the valve near the sight glass on the right side by the radiator, or is it the valve located on the passenger fender. Either way, the recharge kit that I have doesn't fit neither. How do I recharge the freon on this car?

This is an article I found on how to retrofit an R12 system to a R134a system. I pretty sure after seeing this pdf that I do have a R12 system. Crap

all the 5th gens came as r12 from the factory. you can get it converted to run on r134 though. mine is on R134 now and its fine.

The pdf is basically tech instructions that involve replacing various o-rings and ND oil 8, as well as the receiver/dryer.

Did you do the conversion yourself? If so, do i just have attach the adapter fittings to the low and high side valves?

Another article I found on converting R12 to R134a.

This thread should probably be moved to maintenance...shouldn't it?

I had a retrofit done to my 5th Gen. Had to replace the whole system so no left over R-12 would mix with the R-134a

Ok it is recommended to replace the o-rings but not needed. Have a shop evacuate the system and get a R-134a kit from Walmart or somewhere that has the adapters and oil included (mine cost about $25 when I did it) I installed mine from a car at the junkyard and left all the original o-rings in place, charged it up and it is ice cold to this day (did it back in 96 or 97).
Good luck!

Check into a refrigerant called Freeze12. It can be used as a direct replacement for R12 with only a fitting conversion. No CFCs, cheap, and the EPA loves the stuff
