ive been driving my dad's car a bunch lately due to gas prices. just for kicks, since i normally get around 50mpg in it, i figured id see what i could get on a trip from denver to fort collins if i was really careful (and drafting a trucker almost the entire way) :p


Dodge guys think this is funny as hell

The sad thing is I can pull 60+ MPG out of Chaos drafting.

I think the whole Hybrid superior fuel economy theory is overhyped.

I do dig the bumpersticker though. :bigthumbu

well, it gets around 55 without drafting it if im really being nice, and i could have probably gotten 65+ if i was willing to roast myself without A/C. its a CVT automatic though. 5-speed insights can get into the 70's...

Yeah I've heard lots of good things about the insight. There are guys out there modding them upto and some over 100mpg.

Also one of the better looking hybrids. The prius looks like ass lol.

hmm, is there an insight forum or something? its a pretty good car though, and its actually not that slow. its quicker than the corolla i just sold (97 4AFE 5spd)

lol I wonder how much I could get out of the geo if I drafted it. I always think about it, but I never do, Im already getting 50 MPG by driving 60 the whole way down and back

Oh and I like the sticker haha

So how does your alltrac compare in gas mileage?

about 19-22 when it was running. its new tune should increase that, but its new wheels and tires will probably reduce it back to the low 20's. if your interested in reading up on my celica, here's my project page

ive been searching around the insight forum a little, and aparently CVT's don't have the same technology (lean-burn) as the 5-speed models did, and they only rated them at 58 MPG highway. they also keep mentioning how much tire pressure effects these little cars (some say 10 MPG can be gained with high pressure), so i filled up the tires from around 30 all the way around to 40 all the way around. maybe i can get past 65 MPG with the A/C on when i drive back to denver tomorrow :)

Hypermilers typically over-inflate their tires to reduce the rolling friction, but at the same time, that rolling friction is also the grip you need to handle and brake, plus it makes for a bumpier ride.

Might want to test out braking with the extra pressure before you go drafting behind a truck.

Pruis' aren't meant to be attractive, they're meant to be aerodynamic (they've actually got a really low drag co-efficient despite being so bulky) and practical. They're roomy enough taxi services are adopting them in droves.

well, the tires are rated to 44 psi, so 40psi should be fine

It's not blowing out the tires by exceeding their maximum pressure I'm worried about, it's the change in handling/braking characteristics due to exceeding the car's recommended pressure.

Also remember that excessive pressure in the tires will lead to uneven and premature wear...

Ever had tires with uneven wear? You'll swear the damn car will send you into a ditch.

There are some hypermiling techniques that are all good. Such as aerodynamic considerations and regular car maintenance. But some techniques create extensive wear on transmissions, tires and other car systems, and the money you spend in extra maintenance will not be recouped in gas savings. There's only so cheap you can ride.

well, i don't think i can get any more aerodynamic than it already is (i belive it the most aerodynamic car available with a drag coefficient around .24), and im only increasing the tires pressure a slight bit. hypermilers increase their tire pressure to 60+psi. normally i run the tires on my cars at the max rated pressure (normally around 45 psi), but since these tires are so skinny, i didn't want to go above 40 (they are 165/65-14). the tires are Potenza RE92's, so they are pretty good tires too :)

checked it yesterday with the onboard computer shit.. we were getting a little over 40mph drafting behind semis in the duramax :wiggle:
