Well I just noticed the other day that when I start my car it puffs out a pretty substantial amount of white smoke and I can smell oil.

It does this every time I start up but never has an issue starting.

So I've read my piston rings are on the way out, how long before the engine is toast? Is there any way to slow the process down?

Only 130k miles on it, but the 30k I've put on it have been pretty hard.

I doubt it's piston rings...

It stops doing it while driving right?

Valve seals is more likely. The 5s likes to do that for some reason.

is there anything that can be done?

Yea, you will need to do a head rebuild with new seals and such. Shouldn't be too bad as you don't need a valve job! Then again your better off rebuilding the head anyways!

Any idea how long the engine will last before serious damage is done? I won't have time to do a rebuild for at least a month.

I drove mine for 80k miles doing that....

When it died it was because i ran a bunch of nitrous through a motor with over 215k miles on it with no rebuild.

Not because of the valve seals.

Thanks ciento, not gonna worry about it then.
I'll buy a new car before I put another 15-20k miles on it.

If it just does it upon startup, i really wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on the oil level.

Mine got to the point where it would go through about 1.5 quarts an oil change, but ran fine.

I love it that people give good advice on this forum.
What you describe is not a smoke of doom. You have lots of life left with no worry. A small puff of white smoke that goes away within 15 30 seconds especially when the car is started after sitting for several hours is typical Toyota valve seal leak down. Some of the oil sitting on top of the valves leaks into the cylinder and is burned off when you start the car. As long as the smoke is only there at start up your engine will run for years and 10s of thousands of miles with no other problem.

Just know, it's not a bad idea to DO a full rebuild... all the oil (and the contaminants in the oil) are getting into your combustion chamber and will do a number on the pistons and cylinder walls over time. It's not something that'll happen overnight but getting it taken care of sooner rather than later is always a better idea.
