Was there ever a kit for headlights like this?

Not that I'm aware of, but fabbing it wouldn't be extremely difficult. You'd have to remove the plastic trim piece, cut the grille then find a way to mount the lights straight/aim them properly. I'm sure that's exactly what the rally team did.

Would the grille off of an 86/87 work instead of cutting the one i have?

Yeah, all fourth gen grilles are the same.

Oh, ok. I was under the impression that the 86/87 grille had a separate center piece.

The `86-`87 grill is different. It has a center piece as opposed to the straight across grill of the `88-`89. The `86-`87 has little cover pieces that go over the lower headlight assembly. This is replaced with a straight grill on the `88-`89 models.

I don't see why replacing the grill would be difficult. I am not sure if the mounting tabs are the same, but I would think they are. I might be able to locate a pre-facelift style grill at a local yard.

As far as doing the conversion, I have seen one person start it, but I am not sure if they ever finished it. It did involve cutting the assembly and changing it to a non-pop-up style

I don't think there are any off the shelf parts.

There is also another car that shares the same chassis and body as the 4th Gen Celica, I have seen pictures of it before. I 'believe' it was a Caldina. It has straight across lights that fit within the nose of the car. It uses a different grill (the shorter one, like pictured) different corners (cleared like the JDM) a complete headlight assembly (similar to a Camry, removable H4 bulbs) and a different hood (straight across, with no cut-outs for the pop-up lights.)

I have never seen the above mentioned conversion, I think it would be interesting to see. I personally like the pop-ups, but I am always interested in seeing different things done to the cars to make them unique.

Really? Hm, I wasn't aware. Thanks for the correction, Murg. Guess that's what I get for having an 88 and a 89... :)

I'm still desperately trying to find a set of those corner lamps....

Ding! That is the exact car I was thinking of. I have seen this picture and one other. That is about as much as I know about the car. I do believe I will do some investigating when I get home from work.

In short though, it is a 4th Gen Celica with a different grill and light assembly.

If I weren't so fond of my pop-ups, I would try like hell to source all of those parts. I am especially fond of the corners.

This particular example belongs to a young man in New Zealand. He was going to source me a set of those corner lights unfortunately I am no longer able to contact him. As far as I know these were right hand drive only cars. There were not that many made. The owner of this one was going to source the corner lamps from Toyota so it may be a possibility to order parts from Toyota, but would probably be a pain to find the part numbers....

Here is a Celica with a conversion (sort of). The headlight no longer flip and are hidden behind the grill.

Did that car have a big wing on it at one time?

i know this is a really old topic but its one i still change my mind about doing continually and wanted to clear some things up.

the grills on the celicas ARE intervhangable although the centre bracket may require some persuasion. If you have the 86-87 (pre facelift) youu can simply cut the gray bits off the corner light assembly.

as for the acual mod there was a kit sold over in japan. But as you imagine have long since been gone and forgotten.
Theres a few that have done/ strated this. To do it basically to you need to cut the "eye lids" (the grey pieces)off the head light panels. You then need to drill out the bottom locaator pins (i think theres 2) re-allign the headlight to wher you want and re-weld to fix the light in position. Then i would imagine its a case of simply removing or killin power to the pop up motor. The most irritating part of this would be fabbing up a cover/surround for the head lightto meet up with the grille.

i have never done this myself but still consider doing this for my other 162 when i turn it into a track car

Even though it saves weight from the front of the car, I cannot be doing without my pop up lights.

The clear corners require a fair bit of work to fit, and are not that easy to make line up with the grill, as they dont slope as much.

Mine came second hand from Japan, and you cannot get the parts in the UK sadly, I know as I tried to buy more.

Keyword being.... HAD.

I like the popups as much as anyone, but they do make the cars look appear very dated.

I like the look of the popups. I'm not sure why they don't make cars with them anymore. Could be that new rules state that headlights must be fixed or that the laws changed when daytime running lights became law (in Canada at least).

I keep looking at the first picture and thinking why the headlights have been modded that way. At first I thought it was for an areodynamic advantage, but then wouldn't there be a plastic cover or something over them to smooth everything out. I would guess that maybe because that car is into the racing that it is doing damage to the front end is anticipated. With the pop up lights any such damage could cause them to get stuck in either the up or down position. Having lights that dont move eliminates that problem. Also there is a weight savings, but I'm not sure how significant that would be. Any other theories?

I'm keeping the pop up lights on both my cars!

Cheers,
Berg
