'95 Miata

List of the stuff that's getting done in the next couple weeks
-install new black top
-new exhaust gaskets
-change transmission fluid to redline mt90
-change differential fluid to redline 75w90ns
-change the inner shift boot and change/fill turret oil
-hawk hps pads in front and rear
-fix handbrake

Cosmetically it's not going to win any beauty contests, it has a poor repaint that's chipping and some rear bumper damage. The car is very fun to drive in the corners though. I'm still keeping the Celica for the winter but this will be my summer and autocross car.

They're fun to drive, but I can't get the prejudice of midlife crisis car out of my head.

It's going to stay stock for this year, I want to learn how the car feels and responds before I toss any power or handling bits on it. Next year I'll probably pick up some sticky summer tires maybe rims too. If I keep it after that, it's getting either a turbo or supercharger. It's a pretty light car at 2300lbs so it doesn't need crazy amounts of power. A good coldside supercharger kit gives it around 170whp to 220whp depending on the boost and the options. There is a wide range of turbo kits available from 140whp to 300+.

That's not much heavier than my first gen.

Nice car! I'll have to come up and hang out with you and check that thing out sometime.

Cool, cheap RWD ftw. Except your making your Celica the winter car? That depresses me. :(

I was looking at either an e30 3 series or a Miata, this one popped up so I scooped it up.

Makes it much easier to find one that isn't abused though

lol real funny

Feel free if you're ever in the area.

I've seen a few 1.6s (90-93) for sale with hard tops for $2000-2500, not a bad deal at all since the hardtop is usually worth $800+ alone. They pop up on craigslist every now and then.

Handling blows my Celica away, but my Celica doesn't have a front sway bar and the stock suspension is at 200k miles. The steering is very tight and responsive, the car is on stock suspension and all-season tires and I'm pretty sure it would top my Celica on summer tires in autocross no problem. It's very fun tossing it around in the turns, I just can't wait to get everything sorted to take it out autocrossing.

Celica was always my winter car, except I used it in the summer also. It's a great A to B car but it always left me wanting more in the handling department and I don't want to throw more money at it considering it is rusting :(

It is a good deal, but if i personally had to choose between a 1.6 w/ a hardtop vs. a 1.8 without, i'd go the 1.8, since it has proven to be a much more robust engine.

Nice score, man! I've always wanted one of these myself. :)

Reliability is very good. 1.8 is more reliable vs. the 1.6 in the long run, though.

I didn't realize that Honda made the Miata.

Read what i said dude...

There ARE design differences between the 1.6 litre miata engines and the 1.8 litre miata engines. Pre 1992 1.6 litre miatas had a short nose crank that was pretty weak. Shared the same issues that the old 323 motors had in terms of failure at the crank shaft. Also causes some interesting wear issues. Such as.... wearing out the keyway, and making your car run like crap.

1992 and on, this issue is supposed to have been fixed, but most people find that the 1.8 is a better alternative, and better suited to the car anyways, with fewer issues.

^Are you going to Springfield?

Assuming my car doesn't blow up.

My buddy is ressurecting the Coupe this week so he has something reliable to drive until his Honda is put back together, so both of my GTs might be out there.

I doubt I'll be going to the meet, the biggest things that still haven't shipped are the brake pads and the exhaust gaskets. The brakes are bad and I smell like exhaust every time I get out of the car. I still have to put the top on which looks like a PITA, don't even know where to start.

Ewww to the top job, seriously. We were going to have to be doing that soon if we hadn't traded in the Spyder and I was not looking forward to it at all. If I ever get another convertible, it will be a hardtop convertible or have a removable hardtop to use in the winter.
