5SFE -- 2.2L, basically a bored-out 3SFE, more powerful motor overall.

3SFE -- 2.0L predecessor to the 5SFE.

Not so, the 3SFE was used in the Camry overseas and used in Rav4s here in the states. These motors saw use all the way up into the late 90s as far as I know.

The 3SFE sold on eBay is most likely one of the later models of the 3SFE, it had better cams and flow characteristics compared to the earlier 3SFE and 5SFE.

There are some differences in getting a 3SFE to work in a 5SFE equipped car, most notably the head. I am not sure of the changes it takes to make it run, but it is not that involved.

I do believe there are some issues with the ignition system, but again, I am by no means an expert on the S series and it's variants.

The easiest solution would involve using your 5SFE head on a 3SFE shortblock, of that is the path you are going to take.

The easiest method is to find a same year engine as what is already in your car and drop it in. That is the only promised drop in plug and play solution to replace an engine.

5sfe is a hard motor to find. found one on ebay thats rebuilt for 1000 but you have to send your old motor back to them. and it says it will fit into any toyota front wheel drive up to 2002. arent the motor mounts all different between the years and models? it just dosent make since that all 5sfe motors will fit into any fw drive toyota...

The 3SFE did precede the 5SFE -- it wasn't replaced by it, at least not immediately, though the 5SFE did eventually displace the 3SFE even in the Rav4.
