I was just wondering what you guys think of replacing my 5sfe with a silver or blacktop 20v. I was just sittin here and the thought just crossed my mind. Would that bring me more or less power. I just think they sound sexy as hell. Also whats the difference between a black top and a silver top? I have to know because im developing a good love for these motors and would like to learn more. Lastly what would that swap do for my emissions here in the metro atl area of geargia. Thanks alot you guys and i think this would be a good thread starter

um thats just as much work as putting a 3s in a st, it would be easier to go on and do the 3s swap

not worth it in my opinion. You would have to change a motor mount. You will lose your torque that you currently have, but yes they are fun engines.

Difference between black and silvertop is that the blacktop uses lighter internals and also uses a map sensor instead of AFM. This netted the blacktop about 5-10 more ponies.

It would be better to either swap the 3sge head on the 5s or swap a 3sgte in there, in my opinion as far as cost effectiveness goes.

cool thanx guys yeah maybe ill save up for a 3sgte then. Look for an '81 toyota starlet and put a blacktop 20v in that. I kno a guy that's selling one. Just need to get a toyota to put a 20v in.

Since the Celica GT comes equipped with a 5SFE, being an S series engine, for direct mechanical drop in, you would want to stay with the S series family, being a 3SGE, 3SGTE, 3SFE ect. This would allow you to use all your existing factory mounting points with little to no modifications to allow the engine to mechanically sit in the engine bay connected to your existing transmission/drive axles.

If you were to swap a Silvertop or a Blacktop, being a 4AGE, by design you would be required to change your motor mounts to an A series system. This would include new motor mounts, a new crossmember and new transmission.

Electronically, both engines require custom wiring to allow them to run.

If you are serious about swapping a 4AGE 20V, either a Silvertop or Blacktop you should look for an ST Celica (AT180) as they came equipped with a 4AFE.

20V will also fit nicely in a 6gen ST.
