View Full Version : Dyno Test - IC Piping Upgrade

We recently did some testing on piping upgrades on the MR2. I know this is not specific to the Celica, but thought the results were pretty interesting. I'm also trying to see if I can get a local to volunteer their turbo'd Celica to us for a couple of weeks to see if we can start making some custom parts for you guys ;)

Today I went to the dyno to test one of our products to see what difference they reall do (or don't) make. The product in question is our piping upgrade kit for the OEM MR2 intercooler. Basically replaces the stock long rubber hose and also the coldpipe with mandrel bent stainless steel pieces that have fewer bends and are larger in diameter.

The car that was being used for testing is a 1992 Turbo MR2. Boost was set at 16psi. The car is 100% stock motor. The only modifications to the car are a ceramic CT26 (JDM ct26), an EMSPowered XZ boost controller, and a cone filter in place of the stock air box. The car still has the stock exhaust, stock primary and secondary catalytic convertors, and has no other modifications.

We did 6 dyno runs. 3 runs with the stock piping, and 3 runs with the upgraded piping. We allowed 5 minutes between each run to allow the stock intercooler to cool back down. All of the pulls before and after the the pipe swap were within about 1hp of eachother, so we know we got fairly accurate results.

The first graph is HP vs Speed, to show smoother output since we were not able to get a clean RPM signal. The second graph shows HP/TQ vs RPM, as you can see there are some spots where we lost the RPM signal.

Interesting, that's quite a pickup in avg tq for just piping!

The stock coldpipe on the MR2 is ridiculously restrictive.

So this roughly takes it from what stock diameter, to what diameter?

the coldpipe we make is 2.5" inner diameter mandrel bent. I think the stock hotpipe reduces down to around 2" inner diameter at its smallest spot.
