http://jalopnik.com/378249/rwd-subaru-toyota-sports-cars-officially-confirmed-for-2010-2011

From the article:

In addition we're told production will start in 2010, and Subaru's boxer four-cylinder engines will be used. The RWD Subie sports car should be available in late 2010, with the Toyota coming a few months afterwards in early 2011.

No names have been given for the two new vehicles, though the fan-boy forums are abuzz with rumors like "Subaru Impreza Coupe" or "New Toyota Supra." Both valid options and ideas. We guess we'll have to wait a year or so. Although the last drop of information wrung from Ken today was that the two new cars will be made at a new Subaru factory in Gunma, Japan. Although that facility hasn't yet been built. All of this comes on news Toyota confirmed that it's increasing its ownership stake in Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, from 8.7% to 16.5%. What a day, eh?

PFFT. I'll believe it when I see it at a dealership.

SOOOOO sick and tired of the rumors already. Have heard rumors of a new AE86, the Celica return, new Supra, blah blah blah blah blah.

That's a new article to me, but still I'd like to see it for myself in a couple years.

Toyota's confirmed it, that's more than we've seen so far. Although, if current Toyota designs are a basis for this new car, it will be a huge disappointment.
One the other hand, Toyota has NOTHING in the way of a fun car now. Yeah, some of these cars might outlive me, but garsh darnit, I want drive something FUN!
So, here's hoping that Toyota does something rash and unexpected.

I'd love to see it, I just hope they actually put for the effort to make it look good and not so "futuristic"

Sign me up.

Thats right about the time when I will be graduating from college.

Sucks that Subaru gets one too. There is no way they will disgrace the Supra with a Boxer engine.

AutoBlog says they don't anticipate it to be a rebaged version of either car, rather each will have distinct styling, yet the same platform.

I can relegate that to the SC300/400 and Supra examples. Same frame and hardware, different body and options.

I'll believe it when I see it too......if it does go ahead I just hope to God that Subaru don't have anything to do with the styling.....
Boxer engine? Ewww.......
So, you can imagine that in a few years time we'll be in here trying to sort out 3SGTE swaps.... lol

At least we have seen the Supra/Lexus concept car at shows and testing so I would think that would be closer to reality :)

The scooby engine wouldn't be a bad platform at all for a lightweight rear wheel drive sports car. I dont see a problem there.

Porsche has used boxer engines since God knows when, they dont sound crap, they perform very well and mostly, the form of the engine allows for really sleek designs ie. lower gravity point

I am going to hold off on buying a new car until this one comes out. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun. :)

Subies have odd, unequal length exhaust manifolds, and that is what produces their unique sound. Because of the different packaging, Porshes use different exhaust routing, resulting in their unique sound.

Scooby fans are reeeeaaaallly pissed about this.

The Subaru message boards are abound with angry Impreza / Forrester/ Legacy owners just fuming, saying that Toyota isn't being a good steward of Fuji Heavy Industries by using Subaru technology but not improving the Subaru brand.

Oh, and they're also pissed that the STI is butt-ugly.

You know a huge number of light aircraft use horizontally opposed engines.. what the heck, Subaru is not unique? No wai! ;)

I should have been more specific in my post:

Subaru boxer engine....Ewwwwwww :)

Unique subaru sound: Like someone in the toilet after a very bad night on the booze, possible with food poisoning thrown in...

Porsche unique sound: Like music to my ears, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up

Hope that clarifies my view :hehe:
