View Full Version : impossible removal of water pump pulley, 91ST

so we had just finished replacing the timing belt on my brother's 97 camary (5s-fe), and we decided it was time to do the celica's timing belt.
in order to remove part of the timing belt cover, you must remove the pulley of the water pump. and there's barely any room.
i'm supposed to remove those four screws . the diagram in the BGB uses a nice box wrench that has a perfect angle and lalalala, but i haven't come across one of those.
however, we bent the straight box wrench we had, so that we could use it, but that just wouldn't work.
socket+ratchet won't come even close to fitting.
has anyone dealt with this?

try using an open mouth wrench, that might work. I would leave the belt tensioned up too so that the pully doesnt try to spin on you. Also, if you are able to access one bolt, just spin the pull to access the other ones. What motor is this anyway? Sorry not real familiar with the ST engines

it's a 4a-fe
we tried removing the crankshaft pulley, in order to remove timingbelt cover no. 1, and then pull out cover no. 2 (going vertically from top to bottom, the cover is in 3 parts; 3 on top, 1 on the bottom), but that didn't work because part of no. 2 overlaps part of no. 1.

so the crankshaft pulley is out right now, but we just found another way to keep the pulley from moving.

the main problem is getting a tool that bites hard enough, and that we can get enough leverage to loosen the FOUR (ahh) scerws.

maybe... if you could lift the engine with a car jack... just barely and slowly to have space....

quarter inch socket wrench and socket or a wrench with a socket built onto it

ive done a few 4a waterpumps, they suck

i went rwd and was happy

In Sears I saw a tool that works like a the one used to take out oil filters but they are made with a chain. I saw its use when my timing belt was changed to stop the cranshaft puley

I would kill myself before i did this in the car. Best to just pull the engine out lol.

remove 3 engine mounts pass and front and rear. lower engine and remove.

we got it out. my dad came back with this little modified socket (business trip)
when we used the vice grip before, the vice grip would turn before the screw would turn.

but we managed to remove the screws just fine, without removing the engine.

Yeah you still would have saved lots of frustration just pulling the motor...

crankshaft timing pulley was STUCK on there.
wouldn't budge. had to resort to a crowbar and hitting the top of the crowbar with a hammer to push it out. as a result part of the lining on the pulley (not an actual tooth) was chipped. i guess we'll be getting a new one.

does anyone know of good methods to remove the pulley? two screwdrivers + shop rags (says BGB) produced nowhere near the amount of force needed to remove it.

3 jaw puller with long arms and small fingers is the only thing that comes to mind. Mine on and off fairly easy, so I never had to use anything else. Clean the inside of the pulley and the shaft with steel wool or the like, get it polished up again, maybe use a dab of antiseize and you shouldn't have that problem again.

I used a streering whjeel pulled with 2 screws that fit into it. But then again this was out of the engine bay lol.
