Hey guys i have been looking around to find a lip kit to install on my car. i decided that its too much cash to spend buying a fiber glass one. So i took the ghettoo route and made one myself. Now with this lip kit, i havent seen much of these 'lowes home depot lips' on 5th gens, soo i decided to make a "how to" for us. (Keep in mind that this was made on a student budget and couldn't afford a Rc bumper to make anything 'look' better.)
enjoy

Materials..

Black Paint (or paint of choice)
garden edging 10foot roll
1/8 inch rivets
rivet gun
old tin snips or a knife.
drill
1/8 inch drill.

after you have purchased your garden lining you cut the little flanges off the top. cut about 6-7 feet of it.

like so.

it should look like this.

next start seeing how high you want it to be on the bumper keeping in mind it may scrape on most stuff you go over like cats and dogs and other stuff like that.

here is a semi good pic of where i located it on the bumper.

after you have decided how it looks on your car put a rivet every 6 inches or so just to hold it up. and then put a rivet every 3. so it will flatten out and conform to your bumper. Then paint the rivets.

should look something like this when you are done.

lol interesting. fiberglass/bondo over the holes and mold it to the bumper then paint it. it might look sweet. better than straight rivets.

Paint and any kind of filler will crack off really badly the first time that lip bends at all ie: driveways, bumps, the wind at highway speeds....

Looks good though the more I think about it the more I think that I probably will try it soon.

Nice job, good write up. :bigthumbu

Thanks i was wondering a way to mount it behind the lip of the bumper but that would of gotten in to brackets and what not.

as for the black rivets. drill a bunch of holes in card board and paint em that way? idk i wasn't out for looks lol as you could tell with the john deere plate LOL

I know all about scraping by and trying to make a decent car.

Thats a great alternative to buying a lip. What you could do is find some black screws for the lip. That would work well also and be easier to remove.

ACE is the place! :ohyeah:

Sorry, I'm an asshole, but I have to say something.

It looks horrible! If you wanted to do something for looks, you should've just stuck with your original bumper, and spent the 20 bucks on a clay bar/wax.

Please notify me if your going to do something else like this on your car before hand, I would like to have the opportunity to talk you out of it.

It has to be done right.

I've seen one car where it looked good and that was on Bong's vert a few years ago. He painted over the rivets and it looked nice. He also cut the sheet in half.

At least I think it was him that first did that.

Odd. I still might do this on the Lexus. I'm not looking for some amazing thing since I'll be ditching the cover in a few mos.

Theres nothing wrong with DIY stuff.

It's DIY though. So it will leave you open to ridicule. If you buy an ugly part. People will usually make fun of you. But it's a production part so it's not AS bad, and won't get you the words "Ghetto Rigged"

I don't remember Bong using the garden trim. He used Garage door seal.

In enlightening this thread Heres some info on DIY lips. Maybe it might help you guys do something more visually pleasing. I'm not a big fan of the Cow Catcher type lips myself. I like curvy things.
