Would a short throw shifter from a 7th gen fit a 5th gen?

Or would it be too short?

ive been curious about this myself.. i heard that a stock 7th gen shifter can be installed on a 5th gen as a short throw. i dont see why a aftermarket short throw wouldnt work in a 5th.

It is possible, but you have to use the whole shifter housing.

There are many short shifters available for the 5th Gen that just drop in.

I currently run a Corolla short shift rod in my 4th Gen shifter housing. This exact shifter was used in a 5th Gen GT-S before hand. Many of Toyotas FF cars used a very similar shifter design.

By whole shifter housing, what do you mean?

Would it be smarter to just use one from a 7th gen?

Murgatroy

The entire shifter assembly would have to be removed from the 7th Gen donor car. You would take your shifter assembly out, bolt the 7th Gen assembly in, and then you could use any of the aftermarket shifters for the 7th Gen in your car. You would retain your stock 5th Gen shifter cables and all.

What I am wondering is, with all the short shifters designed for the 5th Gen, as well as 4th Gen and 6th Gen shifters, as well as Corolla shifters, that just drop in with no modifications, why go with a 7th Gen.

I don't know...

I figured, with the lack of most aftermarket support, for these guys, there wouldn't be a short throw for it...

Hahaha...

TWM, one of our board sponsors makes drop-in short shifter kits. They have their own forum down the main page, as well as a rotating ad at the top of the site.

eBay has shifters as well, just not TWM that often. There are members selling them from time to time too.

I have never heard complaints from users of TWM. I have had some clearance issues with my eBay shifter though.

^At the bottom of the shifter?

^At the bottom of the shifter?
Yeah, it catches ever so slightly going into 5th and Reverse. Sometime it is harder than others. Spacer bushings that would come in a kit would resolve that issue though.

Frenchy

Spacer bushings?

So, in all honesty, is an eBay sts worth it, you think?

grayscale
12-16-2007, 06:48 AM
All you need are some washers, no need for any special bushings.

Frenchy

I just got this car yesterday, and I was shifting through the gears, and the length made me think of my 2006 6spd v8 Dakota...

Longest shifts, ever...

Murgatroy

I have washers under mine already, as well as duct tape making the stock spacer thicker. The 4th Gen assembly has a plate underneath it, 5th Gens don't have this. That is what I am scrubbing on.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 07:11 AM
So, let's say I order this ebay sts...

What exactly what I have to do as to not worry about this clearance issue?

Murgatroy
12-16-2007, 07:17 AM
As long as it comes with a 'kit' it should be fine. This should include a spacer bushing of some sort. Having never disassembled a 5th Gen manual shifter assembly I can't promise it will fit with or without the bushing.

Dude, pay the extra dough, they are nothing but quality! ask Geebs or Sean (the two people i know who have their products) about it, ive never heard one bad complaint about TWM, no lie.

There's really no clearance issue with the 5th gens. The only thing I really don't like about the ebay shifters is that they are straight which puts them closer to the stereo than they are already. I had the one that Murg has, gave it to him when I pulled my stocker out and made my own. I also bent it back a little further.

you should buy the shifter from TWM. it may be priced a little more than others, but it is a high quality performance part. they also have the great customer support that the ebay knock offs won't offer.

Lets support our sponsors guys. thanks.

So, I bought one for a 93 - 97 corolla...

Will that fit?

I sure hope so...

grayscale
12-16-2007, 07:46 PM
That's what Murg has, it'll work fine.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 07:56 PM
Good!

I was kind of nervous...

What's the length difference? Do you know?

grayscale
12-16-2007, 07:58 PM
Top or bottom?

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 08:03 PM
Both, if you don't mind.

grayscale
12-16-2007, 08:10 PM
The bottom is just right, it extends almost as far down as it can go. The top however is a little bit taller than the stock one as it is not bent. Though you can always cut it down to fix that.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 08:12 PM
Ya, I'll probably end up cutting it, and maybe bending it...

You have any idea how to go about bending it? Someone on another forums said they heated it to 1200 degrees w/ a heat gun and bent it...

That doesn't seem like a problem, however, how would I go about grabbing it, so I COULD bend it?

Ya know? :-\

grayscale
12-16-2007, 08:19 PM
Ha!, not sure why that other guy did that, I won't go into detail but if you can avoid doing that it would be a good thing. I bent the one Murg has a little but I did it in a brake press. I'm sure that it could be bent by hand in a strong bench vise with a cheater pipe. If you decide to cut it then you need to able to rethread it or reweld the threads back on unless you will use an after market shift knob.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 08:34 PM
Does it need to be bent? Why do people go about bending them?

Murgatroy
12-16-2007, 10:06 PM
Bending them moves them farther away from the stereo faceplate.

grayscale
12-16-2007, 10:50 PM
Yep, cause if you use the cup holder you will constantly bang your hand on your drink and knock it into the stereo. It also moves the shifter closer to the driver for more comfortable shifting.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 11:03 PM
What would the best way to do this, be?

I don't have a vast amount of tools to do this with....

grayscale
12-16-2007, 11:09 PM
To bend it? Just the way I said. If you want it done just so, you can send it to me with return postage and I'll fix it right up for you. Then again, you could just send me your stock one and I'd do the same only it would be better. :D

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 11:13 PM
Why would the stock one be better?

grayscale
12-16-2007, 11:14 PM
It already has an offset bend in it.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 11:15 PM
Ah, hahaha.... well you can modify the stock one so it's an sts, correct?

grayscale
12-16-2007, 11:20 PM
Yes. Sts and shorter top at the same time.

Frenchy
12-16-2007, 11:22 PM
Maybe I'll do that, then sell it on eBay as a STS for a Celica. ;-)

Hahaha... maybe.

Cavanagh
12-16-2007, 11:38 PM
LMAO, Soooo much eaiser if you would have bought the not-needed to be modified twm shifter with quality/customer support.

12-16-2007, 11:43 PM

He's saying your buying shitty ebay products, while i am agreeing saying you will not listen to us by just spending the extra cash for quality product. not only that, TWM is on of the few sites that sponsors us. People bitch about companies not making stuff for our cars when companies like TWM do, then they bitch about the price or w/e. QUALITY PRODUCTS, NOT EBAY RUBBISH! uhhh.

sorry it just annoys me.

the shifter you ordered is made from pulp wood, then painted with krylon metalic. it's been known break under hard shifting and leave nasty splinters in your palm. :)

It's fine, I know that cheap eBay stuff isn't the best... but thing is, I'm a college kid, with little money, and I have to pay for my truck still...

It sucks being in college, with a 28,000 dollar truck, and putting the majority of my leftover money into that, and then getting a car for the fun factor, and mpgs, and then wanting to mod it... with hardly any money left over...

That make sense?

Haha, thanks, it's dark as all hell inside, too...

Thanks in part to the 1% tint on rear three windows (stock 20% with 5% over it) and 20% on the front two doors...

I can't wait til spring rolls around, the Celica is gonna have 2.5% on the doors and the rear three windows...

And then, I'm gonna paint it, either red or black...

stupid question what is the thread diameter for the shifter arms? is it 12mm? 10mm? Anyone know?

Frenchy
12-27-2007, 10:50 PM
Hey, ok, I got the whole thing torn apart, put it all back together, and the bottom is too long...

I got the spacer bushings in my "kit" but I don't know what to do exactly to make it work perfect... I know I have to remove the assembly and lift it, w/ those bushings, but am I going to need to cut out that little plate underneath the assembly?

Murgatroy
12-27-2007, 11:05 PM
The spacers fit under the cup, the black piece that the shifter ball sits in, there is a spacer for that. There should aslo be washers that will go between the assembly and the cover plate.

Lifting the entire assembly will do you no good as it will not change the relationship between the shifter rod and the plate you are having contact with.
