What's the difference between 5SFE with ECT and without ECT? what is ECT?

According to my 1991 BGB, The 5SFE w/ECT apparently has the same ECU connectors as the 3SGTE(22 pin 3rd plug), while the 5SFE w/o ECT is different(14 pin 3rd plug).

I got lucky for my swap the engine clip included the 3rd plug for the ECU since my 5SFE is apparently w/o ECT. But I know a lot of people are looking for this connector, it might be a good source of them in junkyards if there is a specific type of 5SFE that people should be looking for.

How do you know without looking at the ECU and what is the ECT?

ECT = electronic control transmission

great! So some of the 5SFE cars with automatic XMSNs have this ECT. It seems like you can easily tell by looking in the cabin for the ECT Drive Pattern Select Switch. Or you can also look for a Throttle Position Sensor. How else would you know obviously?

I have it. it came stock. it shifts like a manuel just automatically.

All 92^ 5SFE auto trans are ECT.
All it does is if shifts at higher RPMs when it's on [for the older stuff, newer stuff is a bit different].
You can basically do this with a regular auto by accelerating hard.
The ECU electronically controls some of the solenoids in the trans, instead of them being controlled by mechanical valves.

ECT had a 4 wire TPS [identical to the 3SGTE TPS], on/off switch, and a larger electrical connector on the trans.

All 90/91 GTS auto had it.
GT didn't.

And technically, it's not actually the 5SFE that has ECT, it's the trans.
The ECU controls both the engine and trans in this case.

They do.

I don't think they even make transmissions that aren't ECT at this point.
It's pretty common.

Just as an FYI...the 3rd generation 4Runners '96-2000 has ECT. When you push the button a dash light with PWR turns on and the shift points are higher.

Does the 4 runner use the same ECU plugs?

I'm not so much interested in the actual usage since I don't like the Automatics. I am mostly interested in this because the 5th gen celicas that have ECT and the 5SFE use the same ECU plugs as the 2nd gen 3SGTE and many people seem to be missing that plug when they get their engine for the swap. So, people can just go to a junker and ct out this plug rather than searching high and low for them.
