is there anywhere on the engine that says what year it was made? I am considering getting used Japanese engine and I heard the 5sfe did not always have the same horsepower. 94-95 was the only time it was 135hp any other year was 130. So, if the engine is all by itself, how can I find out what year it is?

Thanks

No real way to identify exactly what year that I know of.
Assuming the mechanicals were the same as US stuff, it should have been the older engines that were weaker.

Only real thing is the knock sensor.
In the US 92 ^ got it.

In the US the heads were changed.
Smaller ports.

So most likely a combination of both.

how about the ones they import from Japan?

They had the 3S-FE in Japan, similar power, it was 2.0L

All 5SFE are manufactured in Japan but marketed elsewhere.
Basically, 5sfe only exists in Australia, US, and Canada.
If an engine importer tell you that they can imported a "used 5SFE" engine from Japan, they are lying.
It just doesn't exist.

shouldnt it be stamped on the head? at least for hondas if the head wasnt removed from the block, a yr is stamped on the head. i believe its similar for toyota, not sure.

thank you so much for opening my eyes. I almost bought the used 5sfe that probably had way too many miles on it. i think i'm gonna go with getting my own engine rebuilt route. 3sge seems like over my budget with having to change ecu, harness, and tranny. thanks a lot.

they say their engine has 40-60K miles on it, but how would they know?

I thought the first two digits on the engine were the year it was made. Is this not correct? If it isn't right then I have 2 different engines(my only 2) where this is true by coincidence.

nevermind not going to perfect engine. i'm gonna give a shot to academy automotive. they back it with 5 year/100K warranty. i'll take it there tomorrow afternoon.
