Ive got a hanyes manual that says its behind the motor, toward firewall. Located probably below intake manifold. Anyone have confirming experience? Pics? Instructions on how to replace/get to it?

Thanks Larry

it's on the piping where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine, it's green if I remember correctly !

Right side of motor, infront of distributor is a water outlet.. that has a bunch of sensors on it.. on the bottom of that pipe is the water temp sensor for the gauge.

Wow, the haynes manual has it on the back of the motor, upside down...thank god its in front. Thanks guys.

I pulled the codes 1, 2, 3, 4. One was normal, iginiton, air sensor, and coolant temp sensor.

Im going after this part first.

Hope it solves my surging problem.

Here's the location on a 3SGE motor. 5SFE may be slightly different. This give you an idea though....

Just got some information ( no time to work on vehicle) There are 3 or MORE coolant sensors/water temp sensors. How would I know which one went bad? A friend at toyota a few weeks ago mentioned, the one behind the motor, near the alternator aera, is the one to fail most of the time.

Anyone know what its job is? So i can order the part from toyota?

Is this on a MR2 or Celica?
What year is the Haynes for?
And what year is yours?

its a 1991 Toyota Celica Gt 5spd. I have a chiltons manual. Which coolant temp sensor should i order? or rather, which system is it attached to?

First, junk that piece of crap Chiltons, and buy you a BGB.
Second, there's no sensor at all on the back of the 90/91 5S.
In 92 they added a bunch of stuff, like a knock sensor....But none in 91.
It will be on the water outlet, like Rick89GTS said, tho yours will look a little different.

There is a sensor on mounted to the head or block (dont recall) but it is some type of vac sensor. John and I just call it the mystery sensor and it has been on alll of the 5th gen stuff we have worked on. I have never seen a coolant sensor on the back of the block.

You mean this one?

It's the EGR VSV.

The only sensor on the back of the 5S is the knock sensor in the 92 up.

*Chinanitrous-the sensor you're looking for is identical to the one Rick89GTS posted up. Labeled as EFT. It's just in a different position. It's going to have a green connector on it.
By looking different I meant the arrangement. Most of the sensors are identical on all engines of the same era. Regardless of family.*
