Some guy wanted to trade me his '88 Alltrac for my '91 MR2:

Alltrac- 3sgte 145k miles, faded red paint, same options as my MR2, leaking powersteering and cracked CV boots.

Mr2- N.A. , great body/paint, aquamarine, 187k miles, rebuilt engine, needs a clutch and new alternator/AC belts.

Good trade or bad?

If you want an 88 alltrac it's a good trade. If you want a MKII MR2 it's not a good trade. I know that sounds trite, but honestly it's the real question.

So your saying I'm getting a good deal if I trade?

Damn... KBB says my MR2 is worth $3,000.... the Celica Alltrac $2010. :wtf:

Nada values: MR2 $4,000; Alltrac $2,800

If you really want a 1st (4th, however you look at it) gen alltrac, I guess it's a fair enough trade as far as value goes.

if it were me.... i would make the trade.

well, i wouldn't worry about the powersteering thing (alot of toyotas have that problem)

the cv boots might be an issue. i would check to see how bad they are and also look for any underbody rust (if theres significant rust, walk away). i would check the turbo for excess play too since its a pain to swap them out...

there like both almost equal in speed sad enough. st165s are like the most rust buckets of all toyotas... you could easily sell your mr2 and find a st165 in good condition... most na mr2s go for 2500-3kish in your year. Depending on the condition

Hmmm... I think I'll probably just try to sell my MR2 and buy a st185. :bigthumbu

Your car is worth more. Is that what you were asking?
Only you can decide which one is "better"

I personally would get the 165. Upgrade it some, then sell it for $4000.

I was under the impression that the st165 were worth about the same as my MR2... but since that isn't the case. I'm probably not going to do a straight trade; maybe a partial trade.

But realistically, not very many people will buy a st165 for $4,000 even if it has upgrades; only real fans of the st165 are willing to pay that much.

Maybe just pick up a DSM or Starion.

Lol if you want cheep speed the DSM is your best bet.

But don't think about making it fast, don't even let it see the UPS guy deliver parts... The best idea for this is to buy a car cover or blindfold the headlights. Then you have to kinda sneak the mods on it, like come out cover the headlights. Tell it everything is ok. you're just changing the oil. Then slap a boost controller and safc on it as fast as you can.

They'll break if they know you're trying to make them go faster than they want.

Aside from that. I would just keep the NA MR2 why don't you want it anymore? I looked into the st165's before but c.net talked me out of it since it's completely different than the st185, and thats really what a lot of us want.

Id say if the alltrac is in GOOD condition and the MR2 is in AVERAGE condition, the alltrac is worth more money and Id prolly trade.

But think about it like this. Why would the alltrac owner want to ditch turbo and AWD for no turbo? I mean dont get me wrong an NA mr2 is a cool car, but it isnt THAT fun.

Id rather have a 4th gen alltrac than a NA SW20.

I can see why he'd want to... he can swap it. I'd like to know what's wrong with the alltrac though if he's wanting to trade it. I'd think the cars are worth about the same. KBB is out of wack as far as rarity is concerned. 88 alltrac=more rare than 91 NA mr2.

i would trade, maybe time for a change, at least you are trading it for a toyota and a nice one at least, a 88 alltrac, your mr2 seems like alot of miles and some minor work.

Here's my 2 cents. . .I've spent cubic butt loads on my car, but I could probably get it out. As much as I love the 165's, I don't think restoring one (same cubic butt loads) would give the same return. If the interior and body were good shape, I'd trade. By that I mean no dents or rust, rough paint OK, and a clean interior. Interior is big bucks, I spent $1500 just re-doing my seats(leather). If you don't think of it as an investment, then it would be a great toy. Drop in a newer motor, flywheel clutch . . . . :bigthumbu

The DSM/Starion comment was for fun. No way am I ever going to buy one... well maybe once I have more money, but not now. haha.

I'm probably just going to keep on driving the MR2. The thing is, I thought the MR2 would be better on gas, but it's only a bit better than my Supra (30 mpg, instead of 23 mpg). I was hoping for more like 35+ mpg.

I decided not to trade for the st165 because:
1. I don't know the engine history.
2. The paint is faded/peeling on the hood/roof.
3. I'll have to get my hands dirty *again*.
4. Owner might be hidding some hidden defects.
5. Doesn't exactly get good mpg.

Why I'm keeping the MR2:
1. I rebuilt the engine and torqued everything to spec.
2. The body and paint is still shiny and new, plus straight and the jack points aren't caved/rusted like 80% of the cars I work on.
3. The weak engine keeps me out of trouble.
4. Figured if I wanted to drive something fast, I'd just drive my Supra that day.
5. Hands down MR2 looks BADASS!

swap the mr2... youll get similar gas mileage and youll go alot faster than the alltrac.

Is there snow in your area? I would kill to have an alltrac in the winter time around my area. would be fun.

I'm probably going to just turbo the 5s later and run 6 psi at the most. IMO, should be plenty for an little car like the MR2.
