Hey tirerack called and told me i didnt order the recommended tire size. I orderd 215/45/17, i like a little side wall, i think it protects the wheels a little better. Anyways what size do you guys order when you get 17's?

I think im going to buy some 16 inch wheels next time, 16's would lower my car a little, and i like having my car look like its skimming the street.

your car shouldn't be lower or higher when you plus or minus the wheel size... when you get bigger wheels you should lower the sidewall number by 5 each time you go up one inch. lets say your stock wheel was a 215/50r15 if you wanted 16s it would be 215/45/r16 if you wanted 17s it would be 215/40/r17.. etc etc.. this allows you to change the rim size and not change the height of the car and/or mess up the speedometer. if you notice a ride height difference when changing wheels, then you have the wrong size tire on.

the ST has 14's on it i think.. I thought 45 was a little bigger, but i really do like the sidewalls being larger.

Mr Celica is correct and this is the model i follow as well.

Since you want some sidewall you can stay widthing 5-+ for sidewall. In other words. 215/40/17 is the recommended size but for some extra sidewall go with 215/45/17. I use 215 in this example but the width is up to you and allowance. Your speedo will be a little off.

erugh.... I thought the wheel had a specific width? I have 17X7. I need to read up on tire size.

For an ST the original wheel size 185/70/13. That was what Chaos came stock with. That is also what Mudhoney came with stock as well. I am sure there are other options and so forth.

With Chaos I am running a 205/40/17. This is like 1% larger. This is almost perfectly ideal. This is what most folks that run 17s go with.

For 16s I think the suggested size is 205/45/16. However I am going to run a 225/40/16 when I get my new set of wheels.

IMO the 40 series sidewall is too small for daily driving. It is great for response, but it is hell on your chassis when you find the potholes. And you will find them.
