Well, the 22R and 22RE share the same block.
And the 85 Celica came with the 22RE. Which is a 3rd gen Celica.

You do the math.

the w58 trans is whats in the 3rd gens, find out whats in your truck. and compare the ratios of both.

All members of an engine family can share gearboxes, although bellhousings and input shaft splines may vary. IIRC the w58 is about all you are going to find and if that's what you have you're pretty much stuck with it. W58 bellhousings only work with w58 cores. Although there were some Celicas from around 1982 had the 3T-GTE with the alloy w55 box. I think what the guy might have been getting at was that some of the later w58s may have been a little more refined. However, the 22r platform was used until 1995 so you may be able to find a trans that's almost half as old as what you have now. See here for all the info you could ever need- Stepho's Toyota Site (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/engcodes.htm)

What are you looking to achieve?

i think your truck has a w55 trans, a least thats what my 87 has

id be a lil quicker i think but look up the ratios

yes all 82-85 celicas got a w58
