I'm going to be cracking open my motor, tommorow, and I just wanted to know how you guys clean your block before re-installing it. what passages can I not get brake cleaner in. Anything that I should look out for before I jump into doing this? Any tips?

I was going to use to do that, just wondering if I need to lookout for anything. I'm not removing the pistons though.

Well, you really don't want to get any brake clean in the coolant passages, because the seals in the cooling system don't like hydrocarbons very much. Of course, brake clean should evaporate long before you reassemble anything.

I took my block to get hot tanked, and it came out pretty nice for only $50

Different wire wheels plus drill. Then paint it.

easy off oven cleaner gets the outside of the block cleaned up pretty nice. spray a shitload on it and let it sit in the sun for about a half hour. rinse it with a little pressure and everything should come right off, even the paint. whatever is leftover scrub it with a wire brush and deisel fuel.
