View Full Version : Gas Mileage...

I know this has been covered inside and out, but i was wondering what other 5sfe/4afe owners get in the city for mileage. Are the ST's gas tanks smaller? because i dont seem to be doing that well... i get around 235-240 on E. I think thats somewhat poor since some of my friends with bigger motored cars get 250ish, but then again there tank sizes are realitivly bigger. I do have a minor exhuast leak, and an auto, but i dont think it should bring it down that much. Any suggestions ? Well i guess my main two q's are: Are the ST's gas tanks smaller? and What do you guys get CITY wise.

I get usually around 22-25 combined city/highway with a manual ST. As far as I know, the ST has the same tanks as the other trim levels though there have several different size tanks available on 5th gens IIRC.

my 91 stx would take 14.1 gas of gas from bone dry and get an average of 440-480 miles out of a tank

my 22re gts with 14.5 gas of gas still gets 330-360 out of a tank, with 4 bad injector, and a really bad exaust leak

I get a MAX of 225 miles per tank in my AT. From empty to full. Averages to 14mpg.
3" exhaust, no cats. New factory air filter in stock airbox. no intake leaks,(tested)
I also redid the plugs, wires, oil change radiator flush...

Any other AT guys have mileage numbers?

My last tank was 367 miles.

With a 13 gallon tank, that equates to roughly 27 MPG.

Not bad for 184,000 miles and a modest oil leak.

My mileage stays pretty constant at anywhere from 28-30 mpg city, and I don't baby the car too much, so I really wonder how it'd do if I drove with fuel consumption in mind. :D I usually fill up around 1/4 tank, gives me 300 miles or so. I ran it down to the gas light this summer at 330 miles, but it only took like 12.5 or so when I filled up so it could probably go a lot more.

I have a 1991 dealer brochure that says all the celica models shared the same 15.9 gallon gas tank, but I don't have my manual right now so I can't double check that. I could have sworn the All-Trac's tank was larger than the others though.

Chaos has a ~13 gallon tank from empty. I have put as much as 500 miles on a tank all highway at a constant RPM and load. I have measured her countless times and she always runs in the low to mid 30mpg mark with mixed 'spirited' driving. I normally get 350 miles a tank on her. I know her intimately and have an open exhaust and intake tract.

Mudhoney is still new to me, being the 3SFE we are still getting acclimated, she turns a higher RPM on the highway and sees redline more often. I haven't run her too dry to see exactly what the tank holds, but I assume it is around ~12-13 gallons as well. I am getting about 290-300 miles a tank on her. Recent tune-up and seafoamed when I bought her, gutted cat.

This to me is perfect. I had a Festiva that pulled 50mpg without flinching, but Fuzzbubble had no power. I had a Camaro that wouldn't get better than 5mpg no matter what, and often she would drink a gallon in less than one. The Ninja was a 10 second car.

I'm changing the fuel filter soon as this quarter of school ends, because that has to be where im losing MPG. I have over 250k on my car, and like 150k on the engine. I'm also going to do the timing belt water pump and whatever gaskets i find. Going to be fuN! I should see a great improvment though after i am done.

I am also going to get camber kits installed on my lowerd celica finally. This summer is going to be a good one for the celica!

My 93 manual ST takes nearly 14gal from when the refill light comes on. However, I usually refill around 1/3-1/4, as I don't like to let it get that low, so the average fill is about 10-11 gal. I do alot of around town driving, and usually average about 25mpg. On highway trips, I usually get around 35mpg, as high as 42 once on a trip to Pittsburgh with a nice tail wind.

I could get 400 out of the GT if i went easy and stretched it. I usually did nothing but highway driving on it, with an occasional highway pull. Average mpg was usually around 30. On the few trips i made from NY to Indy and back, i saw 34mpg out of a tank.

1992 Toyota Celica ST Automatic.
141,000 mi.
About 1,000 mi since last oil change. Always changed near 3k.
New KN cone air filter, about 600 mi. Short ram intake.
Deleted muffler, replaced section with straight pipe.

About 65-70 percent highway miles on the tank as calculated, 65-75 mph. Not light on the gas in town, not driven terribly conservatively.

292 mi/ 9.316 gal = 31.3 mpg

I don't expect my next fill-up to be as generous, but I think it's a nice, healthy number- especially how much I run it. Before, with a nondescript cone air filter (probably APC) on the same intake, it would average 24-28.

On a side note... I know people usually look to the air filter, O2 sensor, fuel filter when having gas mileage difficulties. But, has anyone ever taken a look at the tube to the gas tank? Forgive my lack of nomenclature, but it's the tube that the actual gas travels to the tank from when you fill it up.

Cuz, I have, and it's rusted as fuck. You can even smell gas vapors from it. I'll get a pic up here when I have the chance. On a full tank, to the top, if you jack the car up just right, some will actually drip out.

If you've done everything and still have bad gas mileage, take a look at that line. Gas might be escaping from it.

Well I just went through my 1st tank of gas with the Celi. 90 Celica GT hatchback, 5SFE w/193K on it, 5sp, 15" wheels with 205/50-15 rubber. I didn't dare run it all the way down to E. So I ended up with 364 miles and it needed 12.6 gallons. 28.88 mpg.

That is about 60-70% highway. AC on some of the time. No hot rodding and short shifting gears to not tach much over 3K. Yeah boring driving but efficient.

I was going to do a tune up on it but it would appear that isn't needed.

heh, funny thing is that those numbers are OFF boost and going the posted speed limit. I've already done everything except the fuel filter, so that's next on the list (and it's a long list...)

Must be nice. I just filled up, 23.7 mpg on my 90 GT. Of course, I did a lot of spirited driving and also had 4 passengers (tight fit) for probably 60-70 miles of the tank, also running AC. I was averaging 28-29 with just me, no AC.

Will new fuel filter or O2 sensor help at all? I'm not sure when either of those was replaced. I'm assuming I don't have any fuel leaks, because whenever I fill up there's always pressure in the tank.

I've now gone through about 6 tanks full of gas on this Celica. My worst mileage was 26. Best was 30. The rest 28-29. This is the 5SFE with 5-speed. Like David in Germany. The 30mpg was driving closer to 65 on the highway. Pushing into the low to mid 70s and it dropped down to 26mpg. They just aren't geared well enough for 70+mph.

^yah, and i cant belive someone who is 1000lbs. more and 100 more horsepower is doing better than me. It's confusing...my 4afe should be doing awesome on gas, i know its an auto, but it still should do better than 22-23mpg.

Ok Just did 700km on one tank 700km = 437.5 miles. I filled it with 45lit = 11.53 gal

= 37.94 MPG!!!! GO CELICA GO! I will try to do better this tank :)

Not bad for a car rated for 30mpg.

I am going to try like hell to pull 40mpg out of at least 1 tank. :wiggle:

so from what i gather, youd get excellent gas milage if you...

-replace old o2 sensor
-replace old fuel fulter(how hard is this to replace?)
-replace old air filter
-replace old spark plugs, wires and dizzy.
-speed limit
-keep your windows up
-tail winding it
-smaller/lighter rims
-less weight

i also heard that if you had a lower temp coolant sensor youd get better milage? and by having thinner motor oil helps too. are those true?

I'm not sure about the motor oil one...

Although the windows makes sense, but i have to travel everywhere from spring to fall with my windows down....no A/C :owned:

well lets see, id say no to most of those , i got 420-500 miles per tank using

20w50 dyno oil
old 02 senseor, ys thats right over 200,000 mile 02
a/c worked half the time......normaly winows down
it was a 4afe...so i had it floored normally
had some aftermarket heavy cast borbet 5 spoke 14s with 4 215/60/14s on it
replaced fuel filter, saw no increse in mpg
did a tune up when i got it

try again folks :Ban1:

meanwhile my vert that had a 5s got 300 miles per tank no matter what u did, and it got a new motor and everything with new tiresand such

So many people think that using the a/c uses more gas than open windows....true, it does to a degree, but only at around town/side street/neighborhood speeds. Once you get out on open road and get above, oh, 40 or so mph (perhaps lower, dunno), the wind resistence from open windows affects mpg moreso than using the a/c. I don't bother checking anymore, just gas 'er up when it gets to 1/4 tank or so (was getting around 22-23mpg if moderately driven 'round town and 27-28mpg on the open hwy)......and, fwiw, a lot of times in the heat of the TN summer, I'll drop the top and windows, AND blast the a/c on high  Having the top dropped and cool passenger compartment (at least for front seat passengerts) on a hot sunny day is a good thing :)

I have a 5 speed GT, and I average about 32-34 MPG. I shift at about 2500 RPM each shift, except for 1st. Oh, and I use A/C a lot of the time.

The car has 160k miles on it, and the only maintenance I've done is:

- Spark plugs (NGK Copper)
- Oil and filter change (Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30, Napa Gold filter)

And that's it. I need to get a new air filter soon as mine is getting dirty. I'd also like to replace the cap/rotor and spark plug wires soon as well.

I'm getting fed up with the gas mileage on my celica. I am considering ditching it in favor of a civic, my buddy gets 38 mpg in his hatch and it seems quicker than my porky celi. The gearing is so weird on this thing, 5th gear doesnt even act like an OD is worse than a standard D on many cars (as far as keeping the rpms low on the highway). You would think if its geared that low it would be a rocket off the line and 0-60, 1/4.

I have done the following:
Replaced old rusty gas tank/fuel lines
Replaced Fuel filter
Replaced plugs, later seafoamed and then cleaned plugs (got slight mpg increase after this, but still avg low 20s).
O2 sensor looks new, so i didnt touch it.

Is there some way I can troubleshoot poor gas mileage? Only other things that is wrong with the car is alignment and exhaust manifold leak (does get a bit hot under the hood). I didnt really think those would affect the mpg that much, but i can try. Pisses me off cause i bought a 4 cyl car for good gas mileage, 25+ at least.

ya my celica has two cracks in the manifold and i just found that out...and ya im sure alignment plays a big role in gas mileage as does having your tires full all the time...not having the tires full kills the gas mileage, and the tires...you should see mine...my front right tire never stays full for some reason and i have to fill it up at least every week or so...but you can tell i got really really lazy with it because it is worn down sooooo much...was thinking bout rotating the front to the back but need to pick up some jack stands for that one !!!

I've done a bunch of tuning up and now that I'm running 75-80 highway miles a day for school, plus a few city miles, I'm seeing some nice improvements. Just now I filled up from around 1/4 tank. Took 9.6 gallons to fill with 330 miles on the odometer, so that's about 34.5 mpg. I did hit 37 on one tank, though that was with me following fairly close to a tractor trailer for one trip (around 40 miles).

An O2 sensor replacement did wonders for my 4AFE.

With pretty much optimal driving conditions (my daily drive consists of a 7 mile highway trip at 55-60 mph) I have gotten a little more than 34 mpg.

On interstates, it seems to drop to 30-32, depending on the speed and wind direction. Those trips typically fluctuate between 65 and 75 mph, depending on traffic conditions.

im getting 32mpg consistently.... i love it.. my infiniti was getting 15mpg, ran only on premium, and had a 22.5 gallon tank...i hated that crap and im glad i got my celi back mainly for that reason..

I love my scooter. :)

Lexus gets about 20-25 depending on how I drive. There's a lot of stuff I need to fix for it to be better.

It calls for iridium plugs and I just have cheap ass NGK's in right now. I think one caliper is sticking, it needs new rotors and rear pads. The vac lines are fucked up in order.

Not too worried. It hasn't seen that much action since I got the scooter.

I have the same proble and my millage was really poor, attempt everything, change of the sensor cleaning of injectors, Wires change , change of rotor change of spurs, I did of everything, I only lack myself to make a exorsismo, and nothing I work, this consuming too much gas, asks the experts of toyota and they recommended to clean valve ERG and to change valve PCV, besides verifying that the catalyst is not obstructed , takes my car to the mechanic and indeed Valve ERG was obstructed full of carbon, also changes to the catalyst and valve PCV, and my car change, before is 15 MPG and now perhaps my celica crosses 40MPG, this is the solution to its problem
