Hi Folks,

Finally plucked up the balls to have a go at the drag strip on sunday, some of you may have heard of it- Santa Pod Raceway (we dont have many over here in the UK!)

My car is a 93' celica GT. 3S-GE motor, last Rolling Roaded a year ago at 159 BHP.

Because I'm a total noob, I expected to get a time in the 17's and decided that anything over 18 would be dissapointing. So heres how I got on, just had 3 runs. Wasnt concentrating on reaction times, so even if the lights went green and I wasnt ready, I waited until I was before setting off.

Run 1- Bit of a granny start, not enough revs and bogged quite badly. Also hit the limiter in second :loser: That gave me a 16.9 sec ET 1/4. So I was happy!

Run 2- More revs this time, perhaps too many- span up in first :rant: but I shifted much better through the gears. That gave me a 16.7 sec ET.

Run 3- I gave it less revs than the second, but still bogged a bit. Much better than the first run but reakon I could have given more without wheelspinning, or perhaps I gave too much clutch too soon on run 2. So a better start but I was over cautious when shifting from 2nd to 3rd- I did it too soon this time, and managed to drop out of ACIS, giving me a nice flat spot in 3rd :rolleyes: But this was my best run, so heres the info from the slip:

Reaction = +1.3451
60ft = 2.8290
330ft = 7.2518
ET @ 594 ft = 10.1909
1/8 ET = 10.8448
1/8 MPH = 68.81
1000' ET = 13.8370
1/4 ET = 16.4888
1/4 MPH = 87.38

so, only just- but I managed a low 16 :happyrun: :woot2:

Needless to say I'm happy with that, any thoughts / comments / advise appreciated- dont be afraid to say I done bad, I can take it :D Also think a shiftlight will be of great use to me, just for the 2nd to third shift!

thats good. Id be happy with that time on a stock car. Do you have any mods at all?

Hmm, if you could figure out that launch, I think you could get into high 15. A 2.8 60ft is really slow for the trap speed and ET you managed. I'm not a 1/4 mile expert, so take that for whatever it's worth :)

Collossus> It is modified but nothing major by any stretch. Just intake and exhaust, and a superchip which has a base map currently.

T-Spoon> well spotted mate, I've just had a compare between mine and blue scapegoats slips and see what you mean. It also shows that a healthy 5S-FE isnt much slower than a 3S-GE- If it wasnt for the last stretch we would have had a very similar time!

You don't have to use fourth gear do you with an FE?

But I think your right, I definitely need more practise- the problem seems to be the driver :brick:

Almost a full second quicker than my little 5sfe, actually, with a good reaction and launch.

If you were around here I'd say let's meet up for some racin, but you're a good couple thousand miles away, haha.

I had a blast doin it. Definately gonna keep practicing, hope you do the same.

Nice guys. Glad to see people running them. Those two motors are in the top five most bullet proof Toyota motors. Good for drag since they can take quite a beating, if you can squeeze the power out of them that is. I'd still like to see someone put the two of them together though.

I thought you were asking how he had a 3sge in a 5th gen.. I was answering your question, assumed you knew they used them instead of the 5s in Japan and europe and just hadn't noticed his location. Don't get bent out of shape.

No i got that part, lol..I'm cool bro.
I just thought mid 16's was pretty slow if it was a 2nd gen..
I pulled those kinda numbers on my 1st gen 86 celica gts

I have a 3rd gen making only 146FWHP and I ran almost his same times (16.7 something and 16.9 something) on two runs this last Friday. So it's not really that surprising to me (I suck at drag racing though).

you could probably break into the 15's with practice.

omg, Dood that blows ..Are we talking about FWHP at the crank or to the ground here?..Right now i have a 1st gen 3sge with I/H/E and a crank pulley with a 50 shot of nos and im hoping to get it into the low 15's this summer.

FW in FWHP means FRONT WHEEL. I'm not a drag racer and don't really have any interest in it. I'm corners kinda guy. Plus running almost 2 degrees of camber in the front makes launches hard.

Yup its a second gen 3SGE with 159 BHP at the flywheel. It came out at 130+ BHP at the wheels, I forget the exact amount. Since then its done another 5,000 miles and the catalyst is back on the exhaust- thats all that had changed for the strip.

Can I please point out i'm total nooB at drag racing, so i think the main problem is me.

Since I putting this thread up I've asked for the toyota figures for a standard GT over in the UK, and the answer was 16.5 secs.

either way i'm a happy man with the result- Mr slow_yota, you must be a better driver than me! Also remember a 4th Gen is a lot lighter than a 5th, well the UK models were anyway :)

I'm telling you, bring that sucker out to IRP on Friday for Midnite Madness. I'll make it a point to get the GT running again, and i'll see if my heavy 5th gen can't get a piece of the 4th gen. :)

I'd love to see what shes running now but mine is on jackstands and wont be race ready "IMO" for a few more months. Doesnt youre "GT" have a 3sgte swap?

2.8 60" DAMN!!!!!!! dude you HAVE TO HAVE slicks!!! that 60' is terrible. i was expedcting somewhere around 2.4 60' still kickass ET but i am certain, car has 15s in it with a eecent 60'

yeah your 60' is terrible

some advice
CRANK up your rear tire pressure to the max recommended
Lower your front tire pressure to the minimum recommended

like if your tire says 30-40psi have hte fronts at 30, and hte rears at 40

Give it another go and let us know ... you have another 1.6 seconds you could shave off on that launch ... if your suspension is stock, lowering springs like H&R sports or Eibach Sports may be a good cheap way to get you faster...

Would have in it right now if i was still working where i was by this point. I start working again in two weeks, should be swapped by July. I'm expecting mid to low 12s by the end of this years drag season.

But no... i've just got a bone stock 5sfe GT with 200k+ miles. Hopefully i can get her running tomorrow for one last hurrah, and to maybe scatter her engine all over the strip.
