I love my 1991 GT-S, but for long trips I find the gearing to be a little on the short side. Where would I find information about the gear ratios on the Camry 5SFE 5spd? I was thinking if it was a simple swap I would get one and install it when my clutch needs to be replaced (probably soon). I would just like to be able to cruise along at 140 160 kmh and have it reving a little lower. My thought was that the Camry was likley geared a little longer to improve highway fuel milage.

Any thoughts?

drove one before the final drive is the same unfortunately that trans on all 5sfes are geared low or else the car wouldnt go anywhere...

What about a newer Camry 4cyl trans? Like a 02- 06 model? I wonder if it would bolt up.

prolly not worth you spending the money to fit that.

Probably right... I was just thinking that it might be a bolt in affair.

Just send the tranny out for regearing. Have the shop install a new set of gear ratios. Last time I check this was possible.

1991 GT-S = 200khm downhill with a tail wind

Tercel... yet to be tested, but revs a hell of alot lower at 160 than the Celica so Im guessing it will go quite a bit faster before it "runs out of tach".

since were on the subject, would the tranny from the 1st gen solara bolt right up?

You guys are talking about trannys that are already mated to a 5sfe, so yes they will bolt up. The differences will be in the mounts and maybe some of the linkage.

I got one from a JDM car. It feels like the stock was about a 4.3 final drive and the new camry one is a 3.73. 5th gear at 60mph is about 2350rpm. It goes WAY batter on the highway then the old trans, but its definatly less fun down low. Prob in the 1/4 mile loses like .2 seconds, if that.

Do a search for E153, I believe it's a V6 Camry/Solara tranny with longer gear ratios.
