I know I know, this has been asked so many times your eyes bleed every time you read it again. I just need to be reasurred before I spend this much.

I'm looking for a 5SFE for my GT-S. To my knowledge the 5S is in the Camrys as well as the Celicas. I called around and found a 1997 Camry but they weren't sure of the engine code. Am I right to think it's a 5S?

Thanks for the help.

if it's a 4 banger then it's the 5sfe.

It is a 5SFE, but it has balance shafts and no dist. Some external stuff is slightly different too.
IMO the largest problem is those balance shafts...
You really can't just remove them.
You can swap your stuff over, but it will be easier if you find a Celica engine.

Thanks guys. Could we go a little more into detail about the balance shafts and other differences in the motors? Without the distributer does that mean it had a coil?

Also, what about the motor out a 95' Celica or an 87'?

These motors are getting hard to come by. The only one I've found out of a fifth gen so far had 600XXX on it. That's retarded! I wish mine lasted that long.

Why not just do a full rebuild?

It's beyond that. I need a new motor, one with less kilometers.

Contact 'redsled' on Lowmo or MSC. Last i heard he had a 5sfe out of an MR2 goin for 500$. had next to no KM's on it, I was told.

Thanks stick, I'll get in contact with him. I'm still looking on info for the generation 4 and 6 motors. Are they the same as the fifth generation 5S-FE?

Thanks Guys

I don't think I'll be going to the 3S-GTE swap with this car though. Thanks for the heads up.

Can anybody else give me info on the 4th and 6th generation motors? Please.

What do you mean by 4th and 6th gen?

What do you mean by 4th and 6th gen?

I mean are the 5S-FEs out of a 4th generation and a 5S-FEs out of a 6th generation the same as the 5S out of the 5th generations? I've been able to find motors out of either of these cars but nothing out of a fifth gen yet.

Acctually, I wasn't thinking about the 4th generation. Thats a 3SFE. But the 6th generation is a 2.2L 5SFE. Are there any differences between that and the 5S in the 5th generation?

Between 1994 and 1996, the differences were very minor overall, a few slight internal changes and what not, nothing major. I feel that you could pull one of these and drop it right in with no problems. 97-99 changed just a little more throughout all models with the 5s IIRC, and several of the more important parts changed numbers, so I assume these would require more work than the other. Other than that, I don't remember many of the details right off hand.

Basically you can use ANY 5SFE engine out of a Celica. Even a 99 will be perfectly fine. All the stuff you need for yours will bolt right on.
You will just have to swap your external parts onto it.

The Camry 5SFE will also work, with the same requirements.
However, it will take more for those.
I would suggest staying with a Celica one.

Do you think the ecu would need to be changed out, say using a '99, since it was slightly changed for emissions?

No.
That's why you swap everything from your old engine.
You will need to swap the intake manifold anyways, as well as the valve cover, probably coolant elbow too.
Obviously all sensors and brackets.

The only difference is internal.
The head ports/valves are slightly smaller. But this won't create a problem.

I know 92+ 5sfe's have a knock sensor so you might have to wire that up or get the ECU to go with it. Not sure if it's a necessary part?

So I'm good to go with the 1995 Celica 5S-FE. Thankyou everyone for your help. This brings me a step closer to being with my car again.
