electronic controlled transmission. changes the rpm at which your trans shifts at. when activated your trans will shift out at higher rpm's.

Detects load on the car and will usually shift at higher RPM to give more torque/power (this according to my fathers 95 Camry that also has it)

Yeah it's only an Automatic transmission thing. Most cars with a center console mounted shifter have them.

More frequent on Japanese cars of four and six cylinders.

Is it just a fancy name for an "Overdrive Off" button, or is it something else entirely?

I have one on my Celica. It's separate from the overdrive button, which is located on the shifter knob.

Yes I have an auto, if it was my choice to get a standard over an auto, I would have, but it was not an option at the time, so please no comments.

When I use ECT in drive and floor it, I shift around 4-5000 rpms. I get very high revs out of the car before I hit about 90 km/h, then I shift into O/D, which gives me from 2000-5000 rpms to go from 100 to 195, when I hit the governor.

Personally, I love that little button. Car goes fast when I use it, and since I couldn't get a standard, it's nice to know I have some control over the tranny rather than just letting it do its thing.
