It would make a good project car as long as you don't plan on making it your daily driver.

i've been lurking on the mitsu forums and researching the past couple days. i've read that the oil pumps are shitty and the tranny's are problematic.

yeah but u got a gt which means solid axle so u have the 6.7 diff, those blow easily, u will need a rear from a 79-81 supra, and u get the rear disk upgrade for u as well

plus 13 flat was done one a 7.5 rear that was either a 3.90 or 4.11, u have a 3.48

and no u cant put the gts/supra suspension in the rear of the gt/st

Everytime i hear DSM, 1 thing comes to mind. C-R-A-N-K-W-A-L-K

it might be good to resell if fixed or maybe a DD?

the door handles also break often, I know a guy who the driver's door handle broke and then the pass side broke, so he had to go to the hatch to get into his car.

People tear Toyota door handles off all the time, doens't /necessarily/ mean they're defective..

Friend is fixin to get a gst or a gsx

From my talks with him he says that the ones 98 and down had big issues, the 99's seem to be the least problematic..

But i guess we'll learn as we go, he's going to NC to look at one this weekend...if he brings it back i guess it'l be a learning expirence

I have a FWD transmission from a Laser RST thats in like perfect shape.

I dont know how much it would cost to ship it but Id sell it for cheap.

However Im not sure if a G is a good deal on a DSM thats got problems.

Is it a GSX or a GS Turbo? There technically are no GST body designation on a 1G DSM.

Hes wrong. Im somewhat of an expert on DSMs. Ive rebuilt the motor, done all the research, done everything and anything you can do on one.

Heres the skinny on DSMs.

90-92 First Generation 1G DSM. 6 bolt engine, good engine. No crankwalk issues. Fairly reliable IF TAKEN CARE OF AND NOT BEATEN! You can tell these because they have popup headlights.

93-94 Second generation 1G DSM. First version of the downhill struggle with a 7bolt engine. 7 bolt engines are the ones that can crankwalk. The 1G 7bolt is not as bad as the later ones, but they still do. Ive had 1 crankwalk on me personally. Only real difference between these and the older ones is they dont have popups so their front end is a bit different.

95-96 First generation 2G DSM. Redesigned 7bolt engine, smaller T25 turbo, more restrictive head, they started going downhill in the engine department here. You can tell one of these because they dont have the aggressive front bumper, and their reverse lights are shaped like Ds

97-99 Second Generation 2G DSM. Technically not a DSM as the joint effort between mitsu and chrysler was over in 96 but they carried a contract to produce Talons into the 98 model year I believe. Same exact car minus a few exterior styling deals. NOTHING changed in the engines.

So there you have it. Best DSM to get in my opinion would be a 95/96 GSX or TSI AWD shell and swap a 90-92 6bolt engine into it.

i'm heading out the door to go look at it now. it's a gs turbo btw. my brother is the one wanting the car. i am just the mechanic. if the the motor is sound he'll probably give $700-800 for it. he told me it will drive in 1st & 2nd gear so at least i can test drive it.

personally i don't like them but if he can get it for $800 and buy a tranny for a couple hundred then he'll have a boosted car for pretty cheap. plus he offered to buy me a nawz kit for fixing it and every other car he has ever owned. that was nice of him.

luni, if he buys it i'll talk to you about that transmission.

Nope.
GSX, yes.

just got back from looking the car over. it's an awd btw. the motor ran fine and had no leaks at all which is suprising. the problem with the tranny is it keeps jumping out of gear. he told me that the dealership installed this transmission 1 week after he bought it because the original tranny tore up. a few months after that it started popping out of gear and they refused to warranty it. other than that the car is extremely clean. no dents, scratches, and interior is very clean.

i offered him $400 and he agreed to the price. i'll take my brother to see it when he gets off work and let him make the final decision.

My brother used to own an awd turbo eclipse......if you can get it for $400 (even w/ tranny prob) I'd say go for it ....that car was rather fun, to say the least, and he never had any major problems with it in the 5 years or so that he owned it. But, of course, he's moved on to a '97 'Vette that is incredibly brutal......dunno what's been done, but it ain't stock ... nice powerful, well handling car (in spite of being a GM ;) )

I fixed the title to reflect the AWD.

For $400, yes.
Unless the car was totally falling apart.

IMO, they're not junk cars. They are not the most reliable, but they are decent.
Crankwalk isn't THAT common on them.
The trans can be a weak point though.

Oh holy shit, i want it...

If it's in that good of shape besides tranny, i'd pay probably $1500 for it. :P

I can get trannies for cheap.... The local junkyard has a ginormous section for DSMs, there's probably about 300 of them in there. :)

Dude I have more parts for that fucking car I can shake a stick at.

Seriously if you need anything let me know, I woudlnt be suprised if I have it.

For the popping out of gear, check your shifter linkages and cotter pins. Make sure the cables arent bound on anything. Its probably something stupid.

Funk for $400 you cant go wrong, get it fixed, leave it stock, and drive it daily, you wont have any problems leaving it stock and as a daily driver if you dont beat the crap out of it.

Post pics, sounds like a steal of a deal.

Hookecho
02-01-2007, 03:32 AM
well my brother didn't like the body style so he doesn't want it. i'm thinking about getting it for myself but i really don't need another car, nor the expense of unforseen problems that usually arise from a car this old. if i buy it i will fix it and sell it to fund a 5sfte project. $400 is a good deal.

Buy it, prep it for club rally (after fixing it)
beat the ever-loving fuck out of it.
fix it.
repeat.

My good friend had a 1995 GSX that he beat the shit out of. We couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. My old 5SFE beat it every time we lined up or zipped on US 30. He blew the tranny, and then replaced the exhaust manifold and gasket. After that and some more work it still couldn't run it's pace. He sold it for $5,500 and is now driving a Grand Cherokee until he finds a 1998 Camaro SuperShit

Let me clarify that he also replaced the transmission with a BRAND NEW one.

Sorry didnt read the replys but..

I would not buy an eclipse, they have reliability problems. They could be built from the ground up and made to make 500 HP etc. And would make a nice weekend car, but they would still be un-reliable.

Dont buy it if you dont want a money pit.

update.

i ended up buying the gsx for $100. trailered it to my shop last night. most apparent problems are the transmission and the airbox has a hole in it. i'll have pics later.

Think DORIFTU!!!!!!

I'm picking up a 1986 Corolla. AE86 woot woot.

Unfortunately, only an SR5, but it'll be fun to play with while the Celi is off the road after the dragon meet.

And after speaking with Rix, it seems that GT-S conversions aren't too bad.

A GT-S?

Because.... i'd rather have a GT-S. Or hell, both, because the SR5 doesn't have heat. :P

PICS!
